Travis Swift Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 I posted this on the Taney section but I also wanted to ask here as well since people don't visit both places all the time. any answers are appreciated. When midge fishing, are these always fished as a dropper off a jig? Or you guys fish a double midge pattern or even just a single midge pattern? When scud fishing, do you fish the scud on the bottom or really close to the bottom? Is this fished solo or do you double it up with another scud or midge or something of the sort up above it? Besides a scud and a midge what are other flies that are good for fishing with an indictor or used as a jig dropper? Trying to get a Trout fly fishing kit put together. How and when do you fish egg flies, san juan worms and mega worms? I'm assuming water flowing and with weight added, maybe even a drift rig of sorts for the egg flies?
fishinwrench Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 I only fish midge patterns in slow water, and it's about the only time I ever use a bobber/indicator, mostly to keep it suspended at a certain depth, but also to detect the takes. I don't do the dry-dropper thing ever...but that's just me. Scuds I fish just like a nymph, with split shot above the fly, usually along the bottom or over the tops and along the edges of vegetation. Tight-line style, no bobber. Egg flys are a sight-fishing thing for me. Keep an eye on the bright little thing and set the hook when the light goes out. I like a Y2K bug with a bead (but not tungsten.... that's too heavy). Egg patterns are pretty much the only fly that I try to get a "drag free drift" with. Mega-worms and SJW's are fished the same way, totally by sight, but a little drag is fine.
tjm Posted August 8, 2018 Posted August 8, 2018 I fish midge in or near the film and scuds or SJW like a nymph, a tight line with no sinker unless the water is extremely fast or a lift and drop swing. I try to get these to float at the fishes depth by weighting the flies and somewhat careful choice of entry point-depending on current speed and fish depth, the delivery may need to be farther away from the fish to allow the fall rate to get the fly to the fishes feeding level. Things I almost never do eggs, bobbers, droppers... Right now and for the past few weeks I have been using mostly terrestrials at RR.
