Members ozarks
I have been stream fishing for a while now and catch quite a few fish using spinning equipment. I was at the Buffalo River last week and saw a guy Fly Fishing for Smallmouth and Bluegills. I know very little about Fly Fishing but it looks like a fun way to catch fish. I have a few questions about stream Fly Fishing. 1st: What types of Flies will I need for Bluegill and Smallmouth Bass? 2nd: How do I work the Flies and in what sections of the stream? Again I am new to Fly Fishing so any information will help
jdmidwest
As far as flies go, poppers, nymphs, san juan worms, small streamers, and terrestrials for the blue gills. Smallies are pretty well the same but on a larger scale. Later in the summer, Smallies hit poppers and terrestrials better than early on. You will fish the same cover and fast water as you would spin fishing. A good pair of polarized glasses helps with the sight fishing. Depending on the fly, you will strip it accordingly to entice a strike. 4 to 6 wt rods and lengths to suit the stream type you fish. An 8' to 8'6" rod being the norm. Terry Beeson
Only to add to what JD said, find a fly fishing buddy (about any of us are more than happy to oblige) to help you learn how to cast and fish with a fly rod. It IS fun, but a lot easier and more fun if you learn the proper casting techniques instead of just going out and trying to cast like you would a spinning rig. As I said, almost any fly fisherman is more than happy to help introduce you to the fly fishing world... hey... it's a chance to go fishin'... The Caddis
Bluegill rock!!!! I got hooked on fly fishing by bluegill. I'm in central Oklahoma with the nearest trout stream about 2.5 hours away. I get my fix by chasing bluegill and other various panfish as often as I can. Poppers are the most fun, toss one out and be ready to set the hook. Bright colored nymphs also work well, chartreuse, orange, yellow, and red all attract em. I tie up soft hackles with a thread body and starling hackle aimed just for bluegill.
