I have fished a Abu Garcia Revo MGX on one of my rods since 2013. The last three years, I have used it on my homemade Ned rod. Dynamite reel. Worth every penny of its ridiculous, at the time, price. The last year or so it has chattered on the cast and felt clicky as it did so. I need to find a person skilled in reel restoration to revive it.

To throw my light baits on the Ned rod, I ordered a Daiwa Zillion SV TW G reel. It received good reviews on Tackletour and I will use it while I have the Revo MGX restored.

I will post my opinion of the new Daiwa once I put it on the rod. Your opinions would interest me. Heck, any opinions of the MGX would interest me.

I bought a Revo MGX Extreme 2000 in 2017, it came with two spools, regular and shallow which I thought was a great idea. Casts great and in February, 2018 caught my biggest bass that weighed 9.5 lbs. on 4lb line using a black hair jig. Went home and bought another reel so now I have two. I use them all the time whether I'm fishing for bass, crappie or bluegills. Only reels I like more are my Stella's.

I'm thinking the Daiwa will blow the Revo away.

That may well be. It is less than an ounce heavier, but has nearly ten years of tech development in its favor. The MGX won an ICAST award, but Tackletour awarded the Daiwa an editor's choice award. The comparison should prove interesting.

BTW, who wants to recommend a reel refurbisher. Someone who will do more than oil and tighten screws?

The Daiwa is in hand. I loaded it with 6# Yozuri. So far, I am impressed.

The first day the wind isn't blowing 15 mph with gusts to 25, I will go up the the lake and try it out. Caveat: This is Oklahoma. That day may be more than a month away.

Fished with the new reel today. It took me a while to figure out how to dial it in.

Smooth as silk and casts a 3/32 jig head Ned well. I think that will improve as I learn how to set the controls.

When the Revo MGX comes back (I started a new thread about that.) I will keep the new reel in my line up. I just don't know on what rod yet.

Fished with the new reel again today. I did not catch much, but that was not the reel's fault.

It handled beautifully, and the drum I caught pulled well enough to test the drag. Smooth.

Now we need to see if it holds up to mistreatment.

Yesterday, May 28, I caught a 9 to 11 pound (estimated) flathead on a Ned. The fish did not give up easily and made several runs that took line. The reel held up and the drag was smooth enough to protect the 6# line I had on.

If you want an excellent reel, but do not wish to spend $50 for a Steez, look at the Daiwa Zillion.

*Edit: $450 not $50
