oops, wait. 

1998 225 has a different ignition system I think.    

Disregard the HS stator/switchbox commentary.     If it is ignition related then it's a TPS issue.     Check the linkage rod to the TPS.  (Port side, looks like a box of matches). 

I really should always ask for serial number on Mercs before I start spouting off

Had the compression checked. Blew the no.1 cylinder.
