Anyone use and like the Palomino Midge emerger?  I'm looking for two or three winter emergers for my fly box that are easy to tie.

They are all "easy to tie".

Are you interested in patterns that truly mimic the midges we have in this region (that matter)?   Or are you more interested in patterns that classify as "midges", that will get bit ?

I'm looking for easy to medium skilled small emergers slash attractor.  Something for the small stuff in fall and winter... BWO, tricos, and midges.  Sizes 18-22.

If I can live in my pretend world... it would also float a small thread or wire midge behind it.

I've done well with this one.   I don't bother with the tailing/shuck BS.

Do you change body colors or always black/grey shown here?

I do mine pale yellow, with a tiny little olive thorax.     Ice Dub.    #22

All the midges I see on spring creeks here in MO. are cream colored with a darker thorax.    The bigger rivers and tailwaters have black/dark ones.... but I don't fish teeny-tiny midges on big water.

For darker midges I don't think a pattern exists that can outfish a #18-20 Griffiths Gnat.  If they aren't taking it on top.....put a split shot 10" above it.

Thanks... I'll give that a try.  I agree with the Griffiths Gnat, but I was also looking for something in the film.  I think I will probably try a bigger gnat with this as a trailer fly.  My eyes are not 15/20 anymore and can't see these little guys.  LOL, man I miss those days.

As far as midges, here on the White and Norfork rivers you can't go wrong with a simple bead head ruby midge (red body and black ribbing) or a P&P bead head midge (tan body and copper wire ribbing).

How are you fishing those beadhead midges? are they bottom bouncers?

I've only ever used two midge patterns, one called a "small chironomid" 50 years ago had ribbed thread body and a puff of "floating yarn" as gills and the other is Griffith's Gnat. Both surface flies. Both caught lots of trout. Simple ties.

I usually fish them as the trailing fly in a tandem rig setup under an indicator. The lead fly is usually a beaded egg pattern or some sort of nymph such as a pheasant tail or prince nymph, both with a bead to get the rig down.
