Anyone get out and hit opening day? I went out to Talbot with a guy for a quick couple hour hunt, had a tight window because I had to get back but we had a good hunt. Found a big covey of 20+ birds right off the bat. We busted them up and started working them, killed 5 total in a little less than two hour hunt. Was a really nice morning, nice to be out behind the dog again! Had something different go on that maybe someone on here can help me out with. Of the 5 birds we shot 4 of them had bands on them. I have shot banded doves before and seen duck bands but these bands on the quail are not like any I have seen before. You can see the band in the picture, it has MDC and a number stamped on it. I don’t know if the conservation needs the numbers off the band or what but I can’t find any way to report these bands online. I guess I’ll email the regional office and ask them if they want the numbers? I have never seen banded quail before.

                 Great Hunt!

They are tracking how long they mortality rate of a covey. Yes, they want that information.  Reason you have so many bands is the whole covey that are set up for winter were together.  I am betting that whole covey was banded.  Thanks for posting This is really neat!

Last time I was over at Talbot,  and that's been a few years, they had a drop box over by the MDC bldg. where you could drop the bands.
