Can you raise regular Garden Worms like Composting Worms?

Regular earthworms like it cooler and often go really (10'+) deep when the soil is warm or dry. Put your tubs  good top soil in a cellar or basement at about 55-60F  and feed/cover them damp shredded newspaper/cellulose/peat moss/commercial "worm bedding" on top. I've kept "wild worms" year round when I lived in the north east. It's tricky keeping the bedding "wet" enough without being too wet. And you have to watch for mold.

All the times that I tried keeping them outside they died as soon as we had a few hot days and tub soil got above "cool".  I'd guess that a bin several yards wide and a couple yards deep might work, but at that size it's just as easy to dig up the garden.

Two thoughts I have been keeping Worms inside to enjoy cooler or warmer.

Thought about just putting piece of old carpet down.
