Horrible Guide Etiquette!

This morning I was up in the flats area above the rebar hole tying a new fly on, when I hear the rocks crunching. I look up and there is the guide with an already bad reputation (I wont mention the guide service name, but its the one that everyone usually talks about) guiding 2 clients and positions 1 of them right in the spot I am fishing. Here is how it looked. I am there by myself (nearest fisherman is at the rebar hole, I am at the top of the flats) facing the north bank about 20 ft off the bank. It would seem clear to Ray Charles that I am fishing towards the bank. So numbnuts tells his client to fish here and he was taking his other client a few yards downstream. So I mutter to myself for a minute or two and say screw it, so I start casting right where I had been fishing and quickly realize that 2 people cannot fish this same spot. So I move on down and fish the rebar hole.

WTF?? Have just a shred of common sense. There are some things such as etiquette and ethics, maybe you should look those words up instead of being such a horses behind EVERY TIME YOU GET ON OR IN THE WATER!!!

Rant off.

Now for the fishing report.

I did ok on crackle backs until I got broke off. Then I went to a possum scud and hit a couple of nice bows. The largest was a 19incher, very brightly colored.

I was only able to fish for 2.5 hours today, there was hardly anyone there (until a certain guide came along anyway) saw lots of fish, but only saw a couple of the "bruisers" No browns caught today at all.

You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.

99% of the fisherman and guides you encounter on Taney are great. Very respectful courteous fellow anglers. But that other 1%...... Is just ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure that same guide has done similar things to me at various times.

And speaking of poor etiquette - a couple of weeks I was fishing at the rock. I was having a fair day. But the guys within shouting distance of me were not catching much for whatever reason. So at one point the older gentleman across the river from me yells at the top of his lungs "WHAT ARE YOU USING?" and it was in a kind of irritated/demanding tone of voice. I almost didn't answer but decided to. So after I answer he yells back "WELL WHAT THE HELL COLOR?". I just walked on downstream. Some people......

Yes, I think most of us are familiar with that guy who passes himself off to be a "guide." I recall on one ocassion, he placed one of his clients very, very close to me. I politely asked the client to please give me some room and explained to him a little about streamside ethics. He did move, and was embarassed but I blame the so called "guide" more than I did the client. I also gave him the names of several professional guides for future reference.

Not sure if I am referring to the same guide or not but I was pretty much pushed out of the same spot two days in a row by the same guy. I got tired of all the loud talking anyway so I just moved. It is more about being out there and having a good time instead of numbers for me....I'm happy with a few catches

They are sadly mistaken when they begin to think they own the water.

Last time I was there saw a "guide" bring two guys down and literally plant them right in the flow of outlet 2 - I was below quite aways so didn't affect me - but saw a couple of other guys who were already there get pretty irritated and a few voices were raised.

Guess my question is - who in the world would need a guide to put them in the outlet???? Are these people just completely inept?? I would think a guide would feel a bit stupid putting his clients there - kind of like taking lunch money from the slow kid - Anyone who wants to do outlet fishing surely can tell by the people and fish stacked up there where to go without divine "guidance". But hey, what do I know - Maybe the guides "guarantee" hadn't panned out and snagging a few in the outlet was the only way he was going to save his pay. B)

Not the first time I have dealt with guides who think they own the water and you should fish behind their clients. Had a guide come tearing through the brush like a rampaging bear on Ouzel Creek in CO this summer saying he and his client were just downstream and about to get to the water I was about to enter. He asked me to move further upstream, and although I did because he asked me fairly nice (fishing was not nearly as good upstream) - later I wished I wouldn't have moved since it has happened a few times before and why should my trip suffer just because he has some guy with lots of money he wants to impress? I should have told him YOU are the PROFESSIONAL guide - you should be able to get your guy on fish anywhere!!!

OK - my guide rant over too -

I had a guide on the San Jaun do exactly the same to me. He placed his two clients about 6 foot and upstream from me and almost where I was ending my drift. I guess I was in his honey hole. I was doing well there so I just moved toward his clients and closed the gap to 3 foot. He walked over to me and asked me to move down and I said no. I had driven about 150 miles from my condo in Colorado and wasn't about to move.

I still was catching fish but I don't think his cleints could have caught fish if they had the hole all to themselves. Since I was catching way more fish than both of them one of his clients closest to me asked me what I was using. I obliged him and even gave him and elk hair caddis and a hares ear ,two of my most productive flys, to make a dropper. He tied one on and immediaely caught a fish on his first cast. It made my day. After all it wasn't his fault that he had got bad advice. He turned out to be a real nice guy.

I eventually moved on to another good spot. There is so much good water and tons of fish there It seemed strange to me that the guide had to have that exact spot.

I just felt compelled to respond to the reply by JS. Leonard can attest to this, but I have to sheepishly admit that when I first started fly fishing I WAS fishing in outlet 2 by myself and still couldn't catch a thing. I am man enough to say it:) Of course I feel like I know more now, but I could have tried fishing that outlet the whole night and wouldn't have probably even snagged a fish if Leonard hadn't helped me out. So there really are people bad enough to need a guide in the outlets:)

I guess my answer to the guy he planted right in from of me tippet would have been to stand my ground, and if his fly line crossed mine or tangled me up, this 3 inch blade case knife would have fixed the problem very quickly. I am geezer enough with a touch of curmudgery to do just that... :noway:

Has anyone reported this arrogant 'guide' to the licensing authorities or local game wardens? Surely there are some standards of professionalism expected by the licensing authority. CC

Is this why I have a slice in my waders? I only ask because we have fished the same holes together. :heeee:
