Saw about 20 boats practicing between Kimberling City and Baxter yesterday. I talked to a few and ALL were very friendly! Most said they were struggling to catch quality fish. Good luck to all of them! This morning only 2 boats headed up the James. I still think the Baxter are will produce the best.
I think Mike's chances are good. He knows this water better than anyone. I would like to see the minimum size increased to 1.5 lbs. Lots of folks can hammer on those 1lbers. I think the Baxter area will be the most productive. Lots of 1-2 lbers there. The right conditions and the Ned could get-er-done! Topwater should be a factor as well.
It's just a matter of preference! Some guys will tie 10 to 20 ft leaders. I personally like a 6 to 8 ft/ leader/ This allows me to retie several times before I have to change my leader. I love braid and I throw power pro the most. I have some on my reels that is 5 years old and still performing fine.
I think you are missing the point! The point is that the MDC needs to have a limit on number of boat per day. Spread the derbys out to a reasonable number of boats each day.
I personal like any 7 ft. med light spinning rod combined with a 3000 model reel. I love 15 lb braid with a 6 ft. fluorocarbon leader, tied together with the modified albright knot. I use 6 or 8 lb leader with 1/16 or 1/8 oz. Ned (preferably Dave's if possible).
I did a little research on Skiatook Lake (curious to see what could lure you away) and it looks like a beautiful body of water. I would have never expected to see such clean water and no private docks in that part of OK. Looking forward to your reports from that area. With all the clear water, I can only imagine the topwater bite!
Put me in Coach! I'm also willing to invite you or the both of you to fish the James out of my boat. Just as long as your expectations are not too high. We have very few SM and not many spots or LM. I can show you a ton of gar if you're interested! I now understand why Bill Beck (rest his soul) never fished the James until mid June.
Good grief Vernon, are you coming back so soon? Our beautiful lake can't handle another 6 inches of rain. I would really love to fish with you sometime (preferably when it's not raining).
We are going to miss your reports, not to mention your humor and willingness to help others! That must be a pretty good lake to lure you away from the Rock. Good luck and God bless you in the next chapter of your life!
139 boats and I've only seen 5 boats each day go past our house (near pt. 13) headed up the James. They must be afraid of the water color or lack of fish. Looking at the results of day one, almost everyone has a limit. The only problem is they are all the same size and it will be hard to make up ground, unless someone finds a honey hole!
Don't feel bad Bill! I helped a couple of the young boys with my HOTSPOTS! They only had i legal each day. I didn't get to Captain them, as one of the boys Grandpa had that privilege.
This is my dock in Buzzard at 9 A.M. The west wind shifted all the debris into Buzzard. Now we hope for a East wind to send it down the James! I may have to get my frogs out! I sure am glad that Vernon went home! I'm hoping he returns in August!
I think we should change your trip to mid August! It would be a big boost to our local economy! It also might end our drought in August if the Rainmaker shows up!
