What Factors influence the Smallmouth population
MOPanfisher replied to Jim Spriggs's topic in Meramec River
Thats like saying don't put criminals n jail because they will just keep doing it...its like weeds in the garden...with effort they can be controlled. It would be more like removing say 25% (and that is generous) of the weeds from your garden, you are not controlling anything, the reproductive capability more than makes up for loss. -

Many things change over time, water flow, temps, chemistry, population make up. If spotted bass are more adapted to some areas, and are more aggressive and are present then harvest or stocking isn't going to change much. They are still going to be there and be numerous, certainly it won't hurt to harvest them but it's not going to bring back the golden days no matter what we would like. -
Bluetooth? Man I aint gonna use any cooking pot that is smarter than me. Which is why I often have to stop at.a skillet or Dutch oven.

Is it a good biologic principle to transplant genetics from somewhere else to the Ozarks. The very things that we think we want (primarily larger, faster growing fish) may come at a cost, namely diluting the native DNA, and any downsides that come with it. I love our native undiluted smallmouth, and would prefer not to approach the native fish populations as if they were cattle we could cross breed as we see fit. I don't know what the answer is, except maybe everything changes, sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse, depending upon your point of view. -
Depends on what I am fishing for and what time of year. Walleye, white bass, early crappie, definitely the creek. Some ra in to muddy it up and I would be there for carp or catfish. Little later for crappie I would be in a cove with some cover/trees/brush piles etc. Conditions can change the plan though, rain, cold fronts, low water etc. I have spent some beautiful days with all conditions perfect in the absolute best spot I could think of and not caught diddly. Have also gone just because I wanted to get out and conditions sucked and caught fish. Guess nobody told the fish.

While unloading the fresh beef into freezers we tossed a fair amount of old "stuff", things my mom had simply pit on bags and frozen. However amongst all that detritus was a couple packages of big gooseberries, so now supper will be delayed as my wife makes a huge gooseberry cobbler with some kind of a pour over crust. Hope its.good because it's a 9x13 pan and.is full. There is always the vanilla ice cream to fall back on. will take a pic of it when it comes out hopefully. Well it is a bit dangerous, I couldn't wait to let it set and burned the heck out of my mouth, otherwise it is good, tart enough and the ice cream addition is just right.

I will admit it, my first thought was, what is an insta pot? Had to go look it up. Interesting.

My crankbaits box has several minnow raps, unless these are somehow different. They are OK, haven't noticed them doing any better than a shad rap.

Trying to clan out some deepfreeze space for tomorrow's pick up of a slaughtered beef. So 2 roasts came out last night, one for my daughter, grandson, and SIL, and one for myself and mother when I got back from Dr. Appt. Nothing more than a roast that got seared in a skillet then into the crockpot with a couple chunked onions and some beef broth and Billy goat seasoning. When I got home the house smells wonderful, wish I had a loaf of sourdough bread to bake, added carrots and some baby taters. Also made an expiramental sauce for the meat, some horse radish sauce my wife had, some juice from the roast, a couple drops of liquid smoke, and a little corn starch to try to thicken it. I like horse radish sauce but it is usually a little too strong for me, but this mixture is just about right. This meal has been approved by "The Dirty T Shirt" group.

I am most certainly not much of an expert.on kayaks, I have used a couple that belonged to friends. The ones I used worked just fine they seemed tippy at first but have some sort of secondary stability as it basically stopped after a certain point. As for standing in one I nonlonger have the balance necessary to even try that. I honestly don't like fishing from one all that much, when I fished the creeks and small rivers I am.more of a slide it up on the gravel and wade fish the holes thoroughly. I just don't have enough time in one.to be that confident. I do like the ability to load, launch and come back to the launch point by myself, allowing me to fish some holes I couldn't strictly by foot. The lonhgest one I have been in was a 13 footer, it was considerably lighter than my Old Town 169 and easier to load/unload. I would probably be better of with a small creek jon and gas paddle truth be told.

I am pretty sure I can hold my own, certainly nobody else is gonna hold it for me. When it comes to competition the is no one around who can fail as miserably as I can. I have a knack for getting bullheaded about it and decide i will catch fish my way instead of promptly switching over to whatever someone else is killing them on. I am also a short distance fisherman and tend to work a small area hard and then have to pass up some spots to make back by dark. But i havent hit a river for smallies since 2014, have caught a few while boating up some local rivers looking for crappie, whites and walleye or bank fishing dor walleye on Stockon, but places like the Niangua or Crooked creek hasn't seen my pale white legs for way too long. Ought to sell my dang canoe and buy a yak so I can at least fish a few small spots by myself.

why do other states have bigger smallmouth bass?

Good thing, a feller could clean out an entire county in no time while drinking beer. -

What's the limit on them german baptist critters. -
There is a difference between giggers, fishermen, hunters etc. and slugs/poachers who use a gig, catch fish, and shoot deer. Poachers will poach, very true statement, whether they are crappie fishing, shooting deer or ducks, or trespassing on private property. As with any outdoor activity it only takes a small percentage of these slugs to taint a whole group. Personally I see way too many short fish or even legal fish wasted by tourists who catch them and keep them but have no desire or skill to clean them, then try to give away a few VERY dead and discolored fish in July or august, and end up simply tossing them in a dumpster or into the lake. I have yet to be on a gigging trip where there was a bottle of anything stronger than Coca Cola in the boat. If its not too cold a night a cold beer with the cooked fish can be downright tasty though. And I have been on trips where we didn't find squat for suckers, plenty of bass around though, we usually keep some brats in the cooler for those occasions.

If you are convicted in court then yes they are saying in the view of the judge/jury/court that you were indeed guilty. That is what higher courts and courts of appeal are for. Realistically it is likely that neither you nor I nor most anyone I fish or hang out with has the; $, time, drive, and a good pet lawyer, and or a sympathetic senator to fight it beyond that level so we accept it as being a crap sammich and we grudgingly take our bite of it and go on with our life. -

Not even close, it only means that the prosecutor was willing to file the charges and let a judge decide. More than a few judges have dismissed a case and then thoroughly chewed out a prosecutor for filing a charge simply to placate someone. -
So from the viewpoint of an enforcement person, you saw that an apparent (obvious) illegal act had been perpetrated by someone, you have no description, no other information. That is good information for an Agent to have and keep an eye on the area and maybe do some more checks, however it is hardly the sort of evidence that will allow them to rush to the area and make an arrest. As Seth said, I know of nobody who goes gigging g to fill a freezer, they/we go to get enough fish to fry for the group, not uncommon for one or two to stay on the gravel bar, build a fire, and have everything ready. Also nobody who has eaten both a smallmouth and a sucker is going to intentionally take a smallie, trout, or LM over sucker. Some days I feel that way about tournament bass fishing.

Unlikely that it would apply. Since the adjacent landowners already as a matter of law own the riverbed then the only thing in question is the water, and to a lesser extent the gravel bars etc. Since the water is public, i.e. waters of the state, it would apply as Adverse Posession doesn't apply to goverbment owned land. Now I am NOT a lawyer and haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn in over a month so I may be making more assumptions than are wise. The long version is nothing is sent in stone until it goes to court and is decided by a judge and upheld on appeal, I believe only then does it become a legal precedent. County Prosecutors can decide to file or not file as they please, sometimes only in an attempt to run a bluff or satisfy a powerful landowner and get the accused to pay the fine and move on. -
Well when I finally stick an arrow through the very last carp, you can say ------- I WARNED YA!
