Crappie Rod and reel recommendations
MOPanfisher replied to ChiefWannaCatchem's topic in Pomme De Terre Lake
I have had great luck with the lower end St Croix and Pfluger Presidents. I also am a light action to medium light on the longer rods as the ultra light don't give you the "tink" as well. Spool it up with 8# power pro and add a mono leader and go fishing. Combos will run over $100 but other options such as Berkley are good as well, but I do love my St.Croixs. -
I usually end up buying them from Napa, but partly because they are about a mile from my office.

Angler Spy has a real time temp at Nemo Marina (running pretty steady at 48 degrees). We take the lake and river temp every Monday and Friday Morning near the dam, where it is also running a pretty consistent 48 degrees. I would expect with the warm weather it to rise a little by next week, I would guess 50 degrees. Warm wind blowing across it and warmer nights help. Rain etc. all things can change.

We used to have a bunch of chickens, would get 200 to 400 chicks every year and raise them and start butchering when they were big enough to split in half to fry. I was the guy taking care of them, never hated any animals as much as I hated them things. My favorite job was catching and head chopping. When they got to the perfect size we would have butchering days, when we would clean as many as 96 at a time, those day we recruited grandma to help. I bet I could still cut one up to fry in a couple minutes. Only good things about them were lots of fried chicken (including livers and gizzards) and plenty of fresh chicken guts for trotlines. We had some Bantys running around eating bugs, some laying hens, a few geese (close second on the most hated list) and for a while guineas. Can still remember the day the big old game rooster that liked to attack everything, made the poor choice to attack my German Shepard. Poor old dog thought he was gonna get his butt whipped, I gave him some extra feed instead and then cleaned the rooster. Honestly I don't miss them a bit. Remember mom pressure cooking the old hens and that dang rooster. Today a crock pot would render them tender and make some good noodles.

Something has to eat the trout.

I LOVE asparagus, the rest sounds good too. If it ever raise I might have some asParaguay this year. Replanted some last year.

I have some pretty nice ones and some $5 ones, the cheap ones get used a lot in the kitchen by myself or wife. We usually have dinner at a friend's house on Sunday nights, trading off who cooks. I always bring one of my knives, they asked me once, "what's the matter, don't yiu like our knives", nope I dont. They don't mention it anymore. A sharp knife is a fantastic and necessary tool, a dull knife is just irritating.
-
RPS, I have a buddy, younger than me even, who is the same way. He learned on regular knives and still uses them. I learned on an electric knife and never looked back. I don't mind regular knives on the bigger fish like walleye and often use them for hybrids, but smaller stuff like crappie and bluegill I stick with electric. I do use a plain steel fillet knife to remove the ribcage and peel off the little chip of meat on the back of them.

Phil just go ahead and make a category called tackle and fish porn. Then let the Web crawlers go nuts linking to it.

That knife is several years old, have sharpened the blades a couple times. Some years back I bought a Mister Twister expecting the El cheapo to bite the dust, but still going strong.

For MY purposes I am going to get a pair of Bass Pro Hobbs Creek. The neoprene ones I have are a bear to get on any more (apparent they shrink over time ). I just need a pair to wear walleye fishing in the spring for a couple hours at a time, pair of long Johns if it is cold or just jeans if warmer. I like the loose fit and ease of using. And I can just throw them in the back sat of the truck since you juse never know when you need to go walleye fishing. The only worry I have on the Hobbs Creek is the sole of the boots being thin, but I won't spend too much time standing in any one trip.

I try to explain to my boss that the work will always be there but the good fishing won't. Fortunately the current and previous bosses were fishermen (better than me) and we could always work out a way for at least one of us to escape when the fishing was hot.

I have heard there were some being caught, but that is normal for this time of year. I also heard that with the low lake level that the COE may not be running their normal 1/2 unit for 45 days or whatever it is, during the spawn. I used to go up there, but is way closer for me to go to Stockton.

Ha, I like sweet taters better than regular, but I do like me some fried taters in about any form. BH them goose breasts have me re-thinking my distaste for yard carp.

I hear ya, the occasional trip with nothing to show was keeping my fever in check, now it is raging out of control. Had to make a quick run to spfld yesterday evening to get an electric fence charger, all the way back, watching the sun set all I could think about was "If I were there I would catch some more" and in my mind I could feel the "whack" when they hit.

When I was a kid dad had a welding shop and folks were forever bringing in old farm equipment for us to weld up. We would fix whatever it was they wanted and often as not end up welding or fixing multiple other things. Dad's theory was he had "retired" from welding for a living and did it as a hobby to help friends, and teach me a useable skill. On one fix I had done a relatively sloppy job to fix something aside from what we had been asked to. Dad made me grind it off and do it right, as a typical teenager I complained that the owner won't even know we fixed it what difference does it make. His response has stayed with me, "son, you will know and I will know, that it was done correctly, and that is enough".
-
There were a grand total of 3, counting me at any given point. Last time I went there were 12 and caught nothing that day. But the weather was warm and beautiful that day, I like sucky weather better, less people and I catch more walleye on those days.
-
I like that you can't stand to send something back out that isn't right, even if it's not what you are asked to fix, personally I wouldn't complain if you billed me for it. But a few bad mechanics have ruined that for folks, the "while working on your motor I noticed this bolt was broken so I fixed it and added it to the bill" when nothing was really wrong have screwed the good trustworthy mechanics of the world.

Opening day of trout park season turned out to be a good day for me. Almost nobody where I was fishing, and Jack don't care about the north wind. 4 jacks, 2 bass and missed 4 solid whacks. Good evening. Decided to put on my old neoprene waders that I have had for 15 years, mostly for the wind/warmth but sometimes I wade out a little. It was like putting a water baloon on a zuchini, and I was the zuchini. But discomfort is secondary when jack is on the menu. Certainly nothing big but look delicious.
