I can only speak to the ones around here, but the USGS installs and maintains them for a fee, we pay for the ones on the lake, and the two main tribs, plus downstream. Honestly don't remember what the cost per year is, but I do know that they can be paid for by other agencies if they wish to keep them.

Dang, I was gonna volunteer to sit with Joe if I could bring a net to catch and keep the food, but frozen, ouch! Showing off your good food is pretty much the same as posting pics of a fish you caught, basically saying look what I did. Some of the items have have lead me off in directions I hadn't considered, I am not a trained chef by any stretch but I know things I like and am willing to explore new things.

Little known fact, the tiles on the space shuttles were made of compressed mashed potatoes so they would not absorb heat. (just kidding . . . I think)

How to store batteries over winter
MOPanfisher replied to moguy1973's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
All my batteries in things, boat, tractor, ATV, mower etc get stored right where they live and work. if I know they are gonna sit for a long time I pull the cables, otherwise the occasional recharge and they are good to go. Amazing though that they seem to fail shortly after the warranty is up. I would be ahead in frustration if I wrote on the wall the out of warranty date and simply went to NAPA and bought a new one, at least I wouldn't spend an evening on the water cussing a bad battery as often. -
Joe, here is something maybe more your speed. grandson sitting today so stopped for breakfast, McGriddle, burritos, apple juice and coffee.

Can't get too far from my roots, bacon grease is melting in the skillet for steaks.

I got tired of grilled steak (blasphemy) and have a couple manager specials, trimmed and terderized, rubbed with garlic oil awaiting seasoning, flour and a visit with the cast iron skillet. plus a bowl of broccoli florets mini sweet peppers cut into matchsticks, and 3 yeller squash chunked up, all awaiting some alone time in the wok. I sort of mixed and matched cooking methods but am not gonna lose any sleep over it.

WM, that is some good looking bacon sir.

Daily Corps Info On Pomme De Terre Lake
MOPanfisher replied to zarraspook's topic in Pomme De Terre Lake
The web page updated to a new something or other. Try this link, it should work. http://www.nwk.usace.army.mil/Locations/District-Lakes/Pomme-de-Terre-Lake/Daily-Lake-Info-2/ -
Back when we used to butcher hogs we cured the bacons and hams out, at first the bacon was possibly the saltiest thing I ever ate, but quickly learned to make it right, and had some of the most delicious bacon ever. Honestly never really considered just buying a belly, (face palm moment). I have a brand new, still in the box electric smoker sitting on my porch, hmmmmm.

My mower loves to eat oak leaves, I rough chop them a couple times and then forget them until more fall. Usually a couple passes is enough to cause them to disappear into the grass in a month or so, I have seen no reason to chop them so fine they virtually disappear immediately. And its a lot easier than burning for me , and I don't like the look of the burned spots, they will mulch just fine in damp and or windy conditions also. Its also interesting that if you mulch them with a mower, set fairly high and it cuts the grass a little as well, the new leaves that fall on windy days tend not to "stick" they will blow off to the neighbors, or off into the pasture in my case. As for the fishing, you said "I should have taken the worms and fished for suckers", I would rather have the suckers than trout anyway,

I have hunted with ML off and on since I was a teenager. most fun was a CVA .32 cal cap and ball, that little rifle would spin a squirrel out of a tree like it was hit with a turkey load. 25 grains of pyrodex and a lead ball. since then I have owned 2 or 3 traditional before I ended up with a used Knight DISC, .50 cal. that thing a blast to shoot, it has been fed different things over the years, but now lives on a diet of Hornady SST 250s and 2 pellets of 777. I have used it with a scope and with its excellent iron sights, just remounted a fixed 4X scope last night. best story with it involved my then 8 yr old daughter sitting next to me in a blind when 2 does came within 100 yards of us one calm evening hunt. BIG boom, and clouds of white smoke, she turned to me and said "that is the coolest thing I have every seen". took her with me to look for the deer, explaining we were looking for blood. a deer jumped out and rand about 50 yards and stopped, I was about 8 ounces from shooting it when it hoped off again and repeated the almost long enough to shoot before completely bolting off into the timber. I was crushed, missed the deer wit my daughter beside me. may daughter who hadn't even seen theas deer and had been dutifullylooking for blood says "daddy isn't his blood", sure enough a nice blood trail going the other way about 50 yards to a large very dead doe. Of course she had to go with me to the check station and proceeded to tell an Agent who was there that it was HER deer. after telling him the story he just laughed and said, pretty sure should just let her claim it as hers. Anyway I will be sighting it in again soon for the ML season tatting Christmas eve since I have 2 tags to work with.

My bank eded up replacing my card almost every year, there will be a bogus transaction that they catch and call me. Then if I tell them its bogus they immediately cancel the card and get a new one in the mail, usually with 3 days I have it. Now that I use BPS card for most things, if we go out of town and forget to call them, sometimes it gets put on "hold" because the charges are not normal, and I simply call the 800 number tell them its OK and I forgot to notify them and immediately it is released. Poor credit can certainly be an issue, but it is possible to get a collateralized credit card (think that's the right term), looks like a regular credit card, only you have to have some money set aside in an account to "protect" the bank or issuing institution. Been a while since I read anything about them.

Maybe they are waiting to audition for the "one cast" episodes.

Awfully quiet around here now that it's duck season statewide
MOPanfisher replied to JohnP's topic in Migratory Birds
I don't doubt they are delicious, they are just a pain around the lake and parks. we go out a couple times from mid Mar to mid April to oil the eggs. And they are still yard carp, snows/blues are sky carp. but then I have eaten my fair share of actual carp too. -

Keep shooting them yard carp, every one you shoot is one less that can hang around the campgrounds pooping everywhere. -
RPS, I love the broth/soup made from the turkey carcass, maybe better than the actual turkey. match it up with some biscuits and yep sounds too good to pass up.

No corn gas/ethynol
MOPanfisher replied to Drbucketmouth57's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
I agree that clean and fresh ethanol is fine, however it doesn't store well. if you let it set it begins to absorb water from the air, and that is bad. the wizard at LSK, told me once 75% or so of their mechanical work was due to poor fuel or ethanol fuels. people let it set in their atvs etc until it is junk and then bring the unit in for service. I use regular fuel.in my mower sometimes because I know it won't be there long, and add some seafood to it as well on occasion. boat motor only gets ethanol free because sadly I don't know how long it will set before I get the opportunity to go out again. -
It was busy soaking up garlic butter. I am not a big fan of corn directly on the grill, though if it's wrapped in the shuck to keep it from drying out, I am in. the other way, good and charred to put into a salsa then I like it in direct contact. what can I say, I have been told many times, "you ain't quite right".

Last bachelor day for a while, maybe. Grilled pork loin, some sautéed squash, corn on the cob, and some leftover, but reheated turnips.

I just happened to notice them as I was going over to a friend's house to feed their critters while they are gone. couple years ago they had found a couple of them and we're absolutely fascinated by them.
