  2. I have had to use slips in private docks on Pomme and LOZ before and have yet tohave a problem anywhere. sometimes you roll up to a dock thinking you can slide in without anyone noticing and there is someone out on the dock, so you either pretend to fish the dock, or give them the sad puppy dog face, and try to snuggle up to the leeward side. The conversation usually goes along the lines of "you fellers are gonna get you butts wet if you don't get under this roof. I would like to say I don't get caught by storms, but sometimes you just aren't paying attention, just enjoying life and fishing, until you hear the growl of thunder getting close, you do the quick look, calculate your odds of making it back to the ramp/truck. Some little pop up showers have trapped me for longer than I want to admit, and gotten dang cold afterward. Decided to make a run back to the truck/ramp once and ran right into the hail, if you see me running for the truck, just pull into the nearest shelter, your odds will be better if you assume I have chosen poorly.
  3. I wouldn't hazard a guess at what you heard. But some critters are just not very good at making the noises they are supposed to and some humans are very good. Most of the nature sounds at the MDC nature centers are actually made by a guy named Ralph Duren i believe, he is creepy in the array and quality of animal sounds. Maybe you were camping.near one of his favorite spots.
  4. Awesome JD, I am a couple weeks away from my 1 year checkup at KU. Enjoy the heck out of the "new" boat, I am still trying to catch up after last summer of no fishing.
  5. http://m.lakeexpo.com/news/lake_news/docks-on-dry-ground-as-lake-of-the-ozarks-water/article_1eec4340-e7c0-11e5-ac8a-eb1f513344ff.html?mode=jqm. It appears that it would be news to Ameren then. They are hopefully taking advantage of the low level but the required 3500 cfs release and no inflow isn't helping them. I believe the agency that regulates/governs them is FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which is part of the Department of Energy.
  6. Ameren is more than willing they just don't have the extra water. They got worried and dumped it before the last predicted big rain which missed them and truman, so they dropped it hard and had no inflow to bring it back up. Heard they were asking the COE to release water from Truman to bring them back up. Except Truman is normal and doesn't have the extra water to send them. Rain and a good one and or stop generating at Bagnell ate the only things gonna bring it back up. Not looking great for runoff rains, and I don't know if they are still generating ot not.
  7. Drew I am with you, the WTD action of a spook simply is beyond my abilities I guess. However the fluke is pretty easy to work in a similar manner, it will dart and move and is much easier for me than a Spook.

    What's Cooking?

Good Looking Pizza! I used to make them a lot for my kids but I made basic cheap ones. A flour tortilla, spicy arribata sauce, then lots of cheese and whatever topping were requested, and a little more cheese. Slide it into a skillet and cover, will crisp up on bottom and be melty gooey on top. Heck I wish I had one for lunch. Would rather have yours Flysmallie, do you deliver?
  9. Only spinning reels I still have confidence in are the Pfleuger Presidents (great for the price) and one Abu Soron, that thing is a tank, bought it used from a buddy who didn't like it. I figured the Presidents for a couple years worth of action but still using them 5 or so years later. Given a good price I will buy a couple and put on the shelf. Seems like whenever I find a reel I like they go and change the dang thing and raise the price. Unless something were to change drastically I have owned my last Shimano, it is a Stradic and was good for many years, but does the binding thing even after taking it to Bass Pro reel repair center, and of course they raised the price on them.
  10. Well I tried. Got there just before dark, saw several walleye caught, both to the left and to the right. Finally caught a nice white bass, then got the "whack", right time and place, set the hook and it dove, shook its head a couple times then started to flex it muscles and said "I don't think so buddy" had it for about 10 seconds. Don't know if I had a weak spot in my line, or it cut me on a rock or tooth, but poof it was gone and my jig with it. Can't say for sure what it was but it was sure in the right place and time and had the head shake of a walleye. Caught one small 15 1/2 inch male a little while later, but was so dejected I released it and took my toys and left. Did hear of a nice sow caught last night though I didn't see it. Dang near made a big splash, knees not working as good anymore, and after standing in hip boots for an hour or so, when I turned to wade back my knee didn't want to do it, missed going backward into the chilly water by a gnat hair. So goes it. Come on crappie time, I can catch you critters.
  11. Drum, the king of sportfish. Been there more than once. It's gonna bust loose real soon.
  12. That is what the "fish bowl" was invented for. Sometimes take 2 or 3 night to get the bowl full enough for a cooking. Always someone you know who will appreciate a couple wally fillets.
  13. Should begin to heat up nicely (no pun intended) this week.
  14. NICE! Looks like a few sows are showing up. Guess no nap in the big chair this evening, I will have to give it a shot. Been there before and left empty handed or worse. Last time I drove my old fishing car with rods in passenger seat, as I reached over to get my coffee or a cigar or something a nice big sharp treble hook took a liking to my shirt sleeve and penetratef all the way through 2 layers of the sleeve on my right arm. Now my right arm is restricted, can't get it loose with left hand finally got knife out and did a little surgery on the shirt sleeve, whereupon everything came loose nicely, and then fell down between the seats, leaving me to fish around for a multi hooked lure somewhat blindly, surprisingly it came out without snagging me or the seat. Good times.
  15. I will be the first to admit that I don't do all that is required by law as to permit number etc. on bags in freezer, I am doing well to get a date and what is inside it. I am not worried about anyone coming to check my freezer if they do well I am busted l, not on numbers but on labeling.
  16. Those my be the biggest hands I have ever seen!!
  17. Good healthy looking fish. Glad you stuck it out.
  18. You don't vote on wildlife code. I don't have a problem with the rule. Do I violate it, well shucks no officer.
  19. You can only have 4 while on the water or shoreline of water body where the limits apply. I have never heard of an Agent raiding anyone's house to check their freezer for more than a posession limit. When a ticket has been written it is usually to someone camping who brings a small freezer and plans to fill it. Laugh but I have seen it done.
  20. Dang I opted to not go to the dam on Saturday. They are definitely not done spawning in the lake. River fish in the river should be finishing up, but the lake spawned will be a while more yet.
  21. I almost never take a photo of a fish that I am about to release, wished I had a couple times though. No doubt it is better for the fish to not be placed on the carpet or dock or in a net etc. But I don't see me ever worrying about it or spending a second thinking "dang I wish he wouldn't lay that fish down to take its photo", I just view it, maybe like it and continue on my merry way. For others it's a pet peeve, I get that as I have plenty of pet peeves but that isn't one of them.
  22. yep, those are the redbuds. you will have some of the Bradford pear and service berry bloom first, then the redbuds, then the Dogwoods. I really think the blooms could use a little rain, at least they could here, and not a 4 inch in a hour type, the 1/2 to 1 inch in a day good soaking type. At least my asparagus and strawberries could use it.
  23. http://fishing.mdc.mo.gov/reports/truman-lake I think I found a link for Trumans.
  24. Keep in mind that a decent looking place, open to the public, especially in an area as busy as TR will likely have more than just you there. Be careful, and hope you pull off a hat trick of a good mess of morels, a turkey and limit of crappie. (But you can substitute a good day of bass fishing too).
  25. I am lazy, I crappie and walleye fish with braid and tie directly to the lure, mostly because my fingers don't seem to be flexible enough for the knot to attach a leader to braid, and about half the time when I tried it either slipped when I pulled or cut itself. Admittedly my success percentage got better last summer when I spent some time just tying them. The thing I dislike most about braid is it doesn't handle abrasion well, certainly not as well as mono. I use a fishing fool knot to tie the braid directly and love it. No plans to go back to mono.
