  1. I have had several hybrids do the sandbagging trick to me, sometimes they are off like a shot from the hit other times you just think you have a decent white until it decides to head elsewhere. Dang muskie are famous for that move, they will sort of lazily come up to the boat, wink at ya, and if they had fingers they would give you the bird and then away he goes, usually along with whatever lure it hit for me.
  2. Of all the fish out there to poach and keep, why someone would poach trout is beyond me. Sort of like there being deer and turkeys and someone poaching possums
  3. They sure a hoot to catch, they make my crappie rod/reel scream.

    What's Cooking?

Well after a couple less than stellar suppers, tonight was a success. 8 Oz steak cpoked a perfect medium rare, maybe even a little under (more perfecter), some mashed taters with herbs, some grilled zucchini, and a Sam Adams Summer ale to wash it down. I would have taken a photo but seemed out of place at the bar in Ruby Tuesday's.
  5. Zowie it looks still fresh, quick Robin hand me a fillet knife.
  6. Accidental walleye do not taste any worse than purpose caught ones.

    What's Cooking?

I won't say that at camp or such places I haven't gotten a little baccy juice or cigar ashes in some things but have never seen it listed as an actual ingredient.
  8. We used to catch bullheads everywhere. We had a small quarter acre or so pond by the house and purposely stocked it with them. Dad would ride his lawn mower over and feed them floating fish food every day. For months after he died they would surface and go nuts looking for food every time I mowed the grass around the pond. And we around around bunch of them, minutes from the pond to the skillet, skinned and fried whole instead of filleted. Darn tasty little rascals. I haven't seen one anywhere in years or I would stock it again, lots of little kids caught their first fish out of that little pond. It has dried up and been cleaned out a couple times since it had them in it.
  9. Hijacking threads is frowned upon. Or maybe the norm, can't remember.
  10. William Pflieger has a vood called Fishes of Missouri. We used it back in the dark ages of college, still have it, has some very nice ohotos, drawing and keying characteristics. I use ages lot of the local terms/names etc but I enjoy knowing what the actual names are. Of course I also loved the Latin names for stuff in college too. May not be quite right in the head.
  11. I grew up with the name black perch. Never though twice about it, still don't even though I know better. Sunfish is a super generic catch all, but it does catch them all, from "perch" to crappie to the species of black "bass". We used to call time spent catching the various bluegill, green sunfish, and long ears as "perch jerking".

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
  13. I am very biased and have never hidden i. I love to fish creeks and rivers for smallmouth when I can, but man it sure hurts to see someone keep a stringer of smallies, may be perfectly legal but I hate it just the same. Of course I hate to see them with a big stringer of gogglers too, but more because of the fact that is a mess that I won't get to eat at end of the day if I want. I am quote happy to catch smallies and gogglers and release them and go home with some green sunfish or LM bass. But more likely I will just go home to a bag of thawed out crappie fillets. LM bass fillets are great at work fish frys.

    What's Cooking?

Maybe I can remember to take a pic. HAve a couple pork roasts all pulled apart for Cubans, also have thin sliced ham and some cheeses and whatever else my wife says is required. On the grill are 10 peach halves getting some grill marks before they get cinnamon and peach balsamic, and because we have lots, sliced cukes, onions and maters all in a bowl with vinegar, sugar, salt pepper etc etc.
  15. Been releasing 3000 cfs for a while now, lake dropping 6 inches a day. Really haven't heard any fishing reports from the lake though.
  16. Pomme de Terre River, Sept october. Kayak diatance from the PP hwy access is enough white bass and crappie to keep your occupied. Stand at the ramp with a sign that says will trade ham sammich for fishing trip. Make sure you are ready to clean some fish.

    What's Cooking?

Slap that ribeye and onions between some good sourdough bread and open a cold beer. Man that looks tasty.
  18. Ouch. But seriously was the dog OK.😆
  19. I haven't followed Stockton level closely but all the lakes are dropping hard, lots of water and gotta get rid of it, sill it, generate with it, etc just need it out of the system and down the river.
  20. Conceal carry is certain not a cure for all things. But then nothing is, the one thing that is tough to learn and maybe impossible to teach is to know "when" to use a firearm. I like guns, I have a conceal carry permit I almost never carry, I seldom go places where I think it might be of benefit to me or my loved ones. The only thing I can think of that a conceal carry firearm would be of benefit in a drive by shooting would be if I were able to achieve cover and make certain that they don't stop and come over to make sure they got me. In that case I wouldn't go quietly, might never cut a hair on them but it wouldn't be for lack.of trying. If someone want to carry I am all for them doing so, do it legally, learn when, where and how to use it well. FWIW the only reason I have ever carried a handgun is a rifle isn't always practical.

Great now I have to go look up bouliabase! Sounds like something used to clean carbreurators with.
  22. darn dude, sorry to hear that. Remember the story. There are fish to be caught, I have some crappie fillets I would bring ya if you get fish hungry! This fall when the lakes are back to normal the fishing should be great and the spawn should have been a good one too.

    What's Cooking?

Birthday meal, wife broiled some bacon in oven, came out just the way I like it, not overly crust but with some chew to it. Made a sammich with whoLe wheat bread, dijon mustard, slice of Colby Jack cheese LOTS of bacon, slice of tomato and slice of a Vidalia onion. Side of sautéed zuchinni and some onions and cukes. Bowl of fresh crappie fillets in the fridge from this morning to boot, life in the ozarks is good for sure.
