I agree... longer leaders, less drag, smaller fly sizes, etc. LOL... but then I can't tie new fly patterns.

Actually...I used to use/still use an unweighted wet flies on a greased dropper line.

    Breakfast

My new thing is my take on cowboy or Mexican cowboy eggs (Huevos Rancheros). Basically a layer of refried beans with two sunny side or over easy eggs on top. Add salsa (I like the green stuff for eggs), Mexican crema, cilantro, and tortilla strips (actually sold as a salad topper). Fills me up and keeps the old pipes working as they should.
  5. My kid sister has been a HS Girls Softball coach for I think 15-20 years, and this was supposed to be her second to last year. Anyway, her girl's softball team from Polo Missouri is in the state high school final four. I think they are a class II school. If they win Friday, I'm headed down to Springfield to cheer her and them on. Anyway... just being a proud big brother. Good luck to them and prayers for all the girls to stay healthy.

I'm sorry... I don't think I agree. There are days, when dry flies sitting above the film just don't get it done. Those days you need something in the film or hanging from the film. These are the days that I'm trying to be prepared for.
  7. I work for a fortune 15 company that used to be two fortune 50 companies. We are trying to combine our large networks into one and man it takes it toll on this old man (or at least I feel like it). I really wished I didn't live so darn far away from the Ozarks. I hope all you folks down there appreciate what you have, because it is special. Just saying. LOL... Hey Al, you renting out bedrooms up there in the wild west? Tight lines...
  8. VERY WELL SAID. I never hunted big game, but a nice fall afternoon with my back against a tree listening for squirrels in the leaves or barking in the tree. That was peaceful.
  9. For those not in the know... what is Jig Fest?
  10. Would that also say that Rainbows are better suited for the water closer to the big springs?
  11. I wondered about that also.
  12. I wonder why Browns are not stocked more. I assume it is cheaper and quicker to raise rainbows.
  13. Any fishing ponds on it. I mean if yes, the least you can do is make sure they are in good shape.
  14. So I found a hack that worked well for me. You will use a small (office supply) binder clip and CDC puffs. Gently gather the CDC puff tips and clip them in the binder clip. Then cut off the stem. Put the CDC in a hackle loop, spin, and wrap. It makes a really nice wet fly collar for smaller nymph patterns. I haven't tried them yet, but they look really good. Let ya know.
  15. Here is a trick for oven rise I found. When you bake your bread, set the oven to its highest setting 500 or 550 degrees. Put the bread in the oven and turn down the temp to what is called in your recipe. The high temp gets the water in the dough converted to steam and it also helps with heat lost from when you open your and close the oven door.
  16. Made it out to the trout pond in Highland again. It was a rough work day, and the weather was just about perfect. You can tell the catch and keep crowd had been hard at it. Could not see trout anymore and rises were far and few between. I tried a few nymphs, but I could not get past the bluegills. They were very active. It would not have been bad, but the gills in this pond are so small. I didn't want to leave, so I put on a big royal wolf and did some casting practice at leaves floating by. Probably good I did because it was pretty bad... LOL. I caught another 5 or 6 gills on the wolf, but they were slightly bigger, but not good either. I know the state put 800 trout in the pond, and I have only seen people fishing in one section of the pond. So there are some still out there. I hate to say it, but I think I need a cold snap to put the bluegills and bait fisherman down. Either way, I fished until after the sunset and then walked for 3 miles. Not what I was hoping for, but probably what I needed. LOL... I now know how to catch some catfish bait. Three inch bluegills on the fly, seem like a catfish treat, right? Tight lines.

Slightly off topic because this is a dry and not an emerger, but here is another one I want to try. Need to figure out the the figure eight tie of the hackle though. Fly is called the NO-SEE-UM. https://youtu.be/vImm4b4sdYE

Here I found the link. The fly is called: Black Mirage Zebra Midge. I did mine with small and x-small wire in black, red, and blue. https://youtu.be/B7vswdVnx10
  19. This popped up in my YouTube recommendations. I think I really like it. I've been looking for a patter that is quick to tie, but sits in the film. Anyway, if I can figure out the figure eight for this fly, I'm going to try it out. Anyone tie or use this fly. https://youtu.be/vImm4b4sdYE

Yea... I fish them all the time. I got a little something to add if I may. I saw this on YouTube I think. This assumes you have UV resin and light. Take the thread all the way up and switch to black. You can also tie in silk, floss, I like x-small red wire (with black thread). Anyway, then tie in a single x-small piece of tinsel fold it over the head and whip finish. Then a drop of thick UV resin on top of the tinsel. You should have a red body, black head, and very very small bulb of resin that refracts the shine of the tinsel in an arc. You still get the midge look, but just a little bit of flash. I just tied up some in blue wire... I don't think it will work, but it was an easy tie and thought I would try it out. Anyway, I drop them off the back of the dry or emerger. If that is all the fish go for, I put it under a wool float.

Thanks... I'll give that a try. I agree with the Griffiths Gnat, but I was also looking for something in the film. I think I will probably try a bigger gnat with this as a trailer fly. My eyes are not 15/20 anymore and can't see these little guys. LOL, man I miss those days.

Do you change body colors or always black/grey shown here?

I'm looking for easy to medium skilled small emergers slash attractor. Something for the small stuff in fall and winter... BWO, tricos, and midges. Sizes 18-22. If I can live in my pretend world... it would also float a small thread or wire midge behind it.

Anyone use and like the Palomino Midge emerger? I'm looking for two or three winter emergers for my fly box that are easy to tie.
  25. Thanks... I meant it in jest. I haven't had anyone be mean on this forum reference this topic. It is a great place to try out new flies, because I can tie, fish, and tie all in one day.
