My two cents... I don't think the problem is the numbers of rentals. I think it is why the people are renting them. When someone goes to Yellowstone or any of the great national parks, they normally go to be awed by the experience and beauty. I would bet most of the people who go this national park (let's not forget that is what it is), go to drink and party. When that is primary goal, why do you care if there are extra horse trails, new houses, the temp of the water, etc. The fact of the matter is money talks, and we as fisherman, naturalists, and such, will never out man or out spend the river party rats. If your local and make a living off of that, why would you want it to change. Unfortunately, I think it is a lost cause. I hope not, but I think so.

Al, I can't speak to your client list, but I would assume some of them got that way because they are good with money. The fact that you use and endorse a less expensive brand rod shouldn't be a problem. Besides I would question how many of these clients have those rods because the salesman saw them coming.

Option 3. If the water currents are not crazy, tie the smaller dry as a 8 to 12 inch dropper off a larger fly that you can see and grease the line. If you can see a hit behind the larger fly set the hook. I use a 12 royal wulff and a 20 Griffin's Gnat and have good luck on flat water and great luck on broken water. On this set up, micro drag becomes your biggest problem so shorten up you drifts if you have to. I think that is why I do so much better on riffles and such.

Yea its the same. Your supposed to hold it by the bend of the hook (behind the point) so that doesn't happen. How where you holding it? I'm not saying I never get nicked trying to get the grip on it, but never impailed. Sorry but.... ---------- Was that the biggest thumb you ever caught? You could use that fly for catfishing...blood bait? Fly $2.50, Leader $5, Line $40, Reel $80, Rod $250, Impailing yourself to the hook bend priceless? WHO'S DA THUMB?

I ask because... I use this fly mostly in broken water runs with a midge dropper. Most of the time, I end up cutting off the dropper because it is working on top. I also seem to have more luck after the fly has been used and looking a little shaggy. I noticed that if I don't split the wing or only put one figure eight in, it looks more like the "shaggy" verision. So I was curious if I should start from there. Plus, its brokent water. I figured the trout wouldn't get a good look at it. I just tied two each way...I'll let you know.

On the Royal Wulff patter, how critical is it that you split the (white calf) wings?

I've used small cranks in broken water with good luck, but not in the still pools. In reference to the 9' rod...try sling shot'ing it will really open up some water for you.

I haven't not yet had the pleasure...but a quick look at the trout waters map shows that Crane Creek is up the road. You could try your luck for a wild McCloud trout, and check that one off your list.
