Yes please keep us updated. I thought late January would be a bit early for fish movement, but I don’t spend enough time on rivers this time of year to see it. I guess I always figured March was the month the fish moved around and by early April they are mostly settled in where they’ll be for the spring season. Thanks,

Man, you really had me going until you got to" just fish a few times and shop". Guess I have been undomesticated too long. My heart goes out to any fishermen who shops on a vacation.

Potamology. I find this discussion very interesting too. I spent some time looking satellite images of a stream section I am very familiar with. I was trying to find evidence of gravel movement and the gradual filling in of deep pools to back up what I think I’ve seen over several decades of floating. Unfortunately most of the images are either blurred or show such varying water levels it hard to tell what happened with any certainty. I suspect if I spent enough time looking at other stream sections I could find places where unstable river substrate resulted in a loss of equilibrium.

Tail outs are an iffy proposition if the stream your fishing is seeing much boat traffic, especialy power boats. Your best bet is a warm summer evening on a secluded river with a little color to the water. Madam X works great if you can find the other parts to the puzzle. Dude, if it was mid June right now we could find it this weekend.

My buddy had the hook straightened on two swim baits this weekend before he landed a hybrid of about 6#. Did he have an incorrect hook?

An interesting animation could be made from the channel change just upstream of Sappington Bridge. Google Earth images from 1995 to the most recent show the channel migrating to the north through a wooded gravel bar forming an island. Now the south channel is almost abandoned and will soon run dry.

Optimism, pessimism. It's getting harder and harder to stay optimistic. One thing I completely agree with is JoeD's comment about the real issue being people management.

Sure it's easy to find fault with this sad episode. How many of us have had close calls? I consider myself an experienced outdoorsman but I've a few. Granted most were a while back but I still think I was fortunate to have learned from them rather than pay the ultimate price.

Let’s hope some good comes from this designation. I say any effort to preserve what’s left of the biological communities in the basin are worthwhile. Yes we are fortunate to have many miles of intact rivers for our pleasure and use but it’s also very frightening to think about how close we came to loosing much more.

I couldn't agree more, except I think most of the change lies with the viewing public. Has the average American become so lame that they have nothing better to do than watch images on a screen and take it for reality? I believe a lot of folks are unable to form their own opinions because they've forgotten how to reason. Lacking in any real life experience it’s easier to just adopt the opinions of others. Does the average American realize just how many people live in the United States? Do they know the likelihood of being the victim of a violent crime? I'm saddened when I drive through my neighborhood in the evening and see the flickering of televisions in virtually every window. I want to take the collective public by their ears and scream at them to turn the television off and get a life of their own!

Wow! "the believers" like a cult, I like that.

That's going to leave a huge gap in our knowledge of one of the most used and important reaches of river in the state. Looks like we'll be going Back to guessing or depending on the opinions of local outfitters for conditions. The real loss will be to the public and future of river management.
