Wt: 48.7-49.2. caught 13 with 6 keepers and 1 bonus walleye that made great dinner this evening. Cranks and Jerkbaits. Chunk rock and ledges. Some fish were on secondary pts in creeks and others on mainlake with some kind of point or change in the bank. Had my favorite fishing buddy with me too. Everybody have a Merry Christmas.
Fished a club tournament out Tucker Hollow, had high expectations with the front coming in. Lack of execution cost me a few good fish. However, between me my non boater we caught 7 keepers with one right under 4 lbs. My highlight of the day was this big joker. Wt: 49-52. Several 14 lb bags, with 16 lbs winning it. Cranks, blades, and Ned rig.
Plenty of options, work a spook behind the boat/plopper/pop-R, drag a Jig, throw a swimbait/grub, fish a floating worm/fluke behind the boat, or fish on the other side into the deeper zone like was discussed in previous post. Its fishing the fish don't care if the person in the back of the boat is getting front ended.
Anybody that has any kind of fish savy can win every tournament shallow, you have to cover lots of water but find the right kind of water and duplicate it, hence "find a pattern" John Cox has made a lot of money that last few years winning in 5 ft or less of water. Looking at on water cameras there was a mixture of anglers fishing shallow and deep. Fishing your strengths is what a lot of the pros do. Our lake can prepare you for anything except grass fishing.
Jack Emmit tourney took 17 lbs I think last Saturday then fell off. Just never know this time of year. I fished as a Co-Angler in the open Kevin Short won, he managed 18lbs for 2 days and then busted the biggest bag of the tournament at just under 16lbs. I know it will take more weight than that but it will be an up and down shuffle of weights.
I love the optimism Hammer! Thats what scares me about our lake with as many 4-5 lbers living in the lake you can bust em off of one CEADAR tree in 10 minutes. OOOPS spilled the beans on that hidden secret.
Thought I would start winning weights for this derby: 43.5 lbs will win. I will be more curious what the cut weight will be to get a check. I would take 18 lbs and run home according to my poor performances the last couple of weeks. I know a couple local anglers who qualified that fish some club tournaments with us may create some waves. It will be interesting. Nothing will shock me with the potential that the lake can produce if a person fishes clean!
The only way I found these fish in the winter was because I saw a bait in a tree and went over to get it and saw the shad run at the edge of the bank and went back to that bank a hour later and caught them on a wiggle wart. They are not supposed to bite in cold muddy water right? However, it had been 2 weeks since the flood and things stablized. "Fish are Crazy" thats all I have to say, find the bait find the fish.
My theory on why there has been more up shallow this year was due to the flood we had in late December causing a lot of colored water lake wide causing the fish to move shallow in the winter. Any bank during this time that had sun hitting it all day you would catch fish off of it with a jig, ned rig, crankbait or spinnerbait. I think they were there mainly to warm in the sun but also I saw gizzard shad running around these banks also. Craws were there two. The bait was up all winter and spring until they finally pulled the lake way down a couple of months ago. That's my 2 cents.
Hang On! is corrrect. They would absolutely try to steal your junk in a heart beat. The first day leader of the tournament caught his fish on a blade. Anytime I catch fish like this and put them in the live well or look down their mouth they are always eating crawdads. There was some small needle fish present and some bream but no big gizzards or threadfiins. They haven't made there big migration yet weather needs to cool more.
Its Lake wide over there as far as nice catches go. In practice, I fished 3 sections of the lake catching 12-17lb limits. Granted during practice we had high winds to position the fish and it was a blast. I put all my eggs into the shallow game and I knew it was going to change during the tournament, but really the fish never moved they changed how they bit the bait. Instead of eating the plopper and crankbait they would slap or knock the bait. Was catching them outside of the mouth instead of inside.
