They seem to be biting ok. About 8-15 feet down in about 20-25 feet of water is where I have been catching the crappie. While they are biting pretty good, they don't seem to have really turned it on yet.
I have been dealing with a lot of moss too. Caught a few crappie today, but they don't seemed to be really turned on just yet. I saw quite a few bass boats out today with a few bass being caught. I don't know what they were using though. I did see one boat fishing an Alabama Rig (don't know if he caught any). Pretty windy this morning. Water is fairly clear despite the rain.
I caught a few around a condo dock this past weekend on jigs. Another guy that was there caught a few on minners. About the 3mm-ish. I only fished for about 30-45 minutes and had four in my bucket. Caught more small ones and bluegill than anything else.
The MDC does a lot of these kind of things for women and kids, but why don't they do any for men or for anyone that want to? Most of the "classes and clinics" that the MDC does that I would like to do are for women or kids only.
Been getting a few. Have seen more wood ducks than anytime I can remember. Have had to be really careful to identify the correct bird before shooting. Can't wait until big duck season.
If anybody in the LOZ area would like to get together for a duck hunt sometime, I'm game.... Who am I kidding, I'd travel too. Those stinking birds have me on a string and I just can't get enough hunting done during duck season.
There were thousands of fingerlings there this time last year. It is unbelieveable how bad they have gotten. Only a few years ago I hadn't even heard of them, now they seem to be everywhere.
I a certainly no expert, but I got a Diawa Strikeforce Rod and a Diawa Exceler Reel and I have been pretty happy with the combo...and it didn't break the bank. I got them from Fin and Feather on Campbell in Springfield. I was a 100% spinning and fly rod guy until about 1 1/2 years ago when I bought a baitcaster combo from Bass Pro Shops. The Diawa rig I put together is a much better rig for about the same price as my BPS Combo. Like I said, I'm no expert and I don't have a lot of experience to talk about baitcasters, but I have been happy with this combo and I think you would be too.
Texas rigged lizards have been doing great for me. I have also been doing well with jig-and-pig, and spinnerbaits. Topwater plugs have also caught me a few bass in the evenings (I haven't done any fishing in the mornings). Overall, I would personally categorize the bass fishing as "excellent" right now.
I too, would say that the crappie spawn is probably nearly over. Still catching quite a few off the bank, but it is getting harder, and the fish are getting smaller. I think that the females have released their eggs for the most part and are sitting deeper now.
I think it may slow them down a little and maybe push them off the bank just a bit. It isn't going to be as cold as they were first saying I don't think. It might not affect them too terribly bad. After the storms move through and it gets warm again, we should see the fish progressing nicely. I give them about another two weeks until they are really hitting it good. Just one man's opinion.
I also managed to catch a few crappie today. I saw a lot of bass being caught on spinnerbaits today, including some quality fish. I saw one guy lose what looked like a pretty big one.
That is what I was thinking also. The boat has to be registered, with the numbers on it and all, if it has any kind of motor on it...Including trolling motors. If there is no motor on the boat, then it does not have to be registered.
Yes, I do realize that this is an old post.
Went down below the dam this evening and fished for a couple of hours. I didn't even get a bite. I saw two other people down there fishing and they had one decent walleye on their stringer when they left. They said that it was the only thing that they had caught. They were not running any water tonight. Still beats sitting around the house all night though. The weather was a bit windy, otherwise very nice to be out. I'm sure I'll be back out there again soon.
I am going to try below the dam tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. BTW I've been lurking on this board for a few years now and finally decided to join.
