It looks to be boney and low...1.0 is about as low as it gets. I'll be in the area, but I plan to float and camp on the river..Say howdy if you see a fellow with an ivory colored Wenonah canoe. Cheers.

Here's one I got from a bud of mine... Smoked Fish Brine In a bowl add enough water to cover the fish. Disolve enough salt to float an egg. Add about a tablespoon of liquid Zataran's Shrimp & Crab Boil and put in the fridge overnight. Sometimes I add brown sugar to the brine. Smoke Prep... Take fish out of the brine and let them air dry on a cookie rack till they are shiny and sticky to the touch (usually about 1/2 hour to an hour). This forms the pelicle which will seal in the juices. Smoke over soaked hickory. Don't put anything in the water pan, leave it dry. My smoker has a door on the front for adding chips and I usually leave it open a little because you want to smoke and dry the fish, not cook it real quick.(Use indirect heat on your Weber) Wrap the fish individually in foil after smoking and refriderate. After a day or two you can open the foil and stick a butter knife in from the "Cleaned" side and they will fall in half whereas you can just pull out the bones in one piece. (Eat them cold) Works well for trout, or whatever you got. Cheers.

I think the slow growth rate on the rainbows is due to the fact that they stock em at 10" and that most get harvested before they have a chance to grow. Fishing on the White & Norfork has really declined in the past twenty years. Glad they are finally condsidering some alternatives. Thanks for posting the update.

I have a similar situation with my canoe...I've been meaning to get it registered, but havent got around to it yet. Contact Missouri Water Patrol, they will need to inspect the boat, check if its been registered before, etc, then they can give you an affidavit that you can take to DOR and get the title process started. Cheers.

If you want him to catch some fish...head over to Rockbridge in Ava, MO or down to Dry Run Creek after you float& fish the NFoW..Fishing on the NFoW is always fun, but the catching is pretty slow when you compare it to the Current, 11pt, or any of the tailwates. I consider a 5-6 fish day to be pretty good on the NFoW, and I've been skunked down there on plenty of occasions. Cheers.

Liberal, Libertarian all the way...Frankly, I dont give a hoot about most of the social issues that inflame conservatives and liberals. Bought all I want the govt (or anyone else) to do is to keep my taxes low and leave me be. I'll take care of mine, you take care of yours. Cheers.

$300 might get you something fishable but I'd probably spend a little more and get a one tip 8' Orvis Battenkill or get a new rod from a modern maker. I've never met Leo Eck, but I've seen his refinish work and it looks very good. Ron Caimi in Belleville, IL might still be making rods, and Bill Lamberson in Columbia makes quite a few. I'd avoid the chinese Highland Mills, and Tea Stick rods. Bob Corsetti and Len Codella are both reputatble dealers...Google em up, call them and maybe they can find something you like. Cheers.

Heck with fishing in this heat..Fish early, then relax, drink lots of bud light and to take a swim every now and then. Cheers.

Looks like there some kind of hybrid goldfish (Carp). I'm sure they would catch fish, but I wouldnt fish with them because I wouldnt want to introduce another species of carp into the waters that I fish. Cheers.

I grew up fishing the Meramec, the upper Big and some of the creeks that run into them. The Big is a trib of the Meramec that runs through the lead belt. There are some pretty spots in its upper reaches, but its got a lot of problems with lead mine contamination, cattle, and development due to its proximity to St. Louis. Mostly spotted bass in its lower reaches and a good smallmouth fishery in the upper end. Used to be a lot better than it is now. One of the few places near St. Louis with a good population of cottonmouths. Snakes dont bother me much, but these days the area is infested with a ton of meth heads. If you visit dont leave any gear in your car. Cheers.

Had a chance to cast one the other day. Think it was the 9'5wt..very nice rod, very smooth but not that fast..I liked it alot..Come to think of it, I need a new 5wt since my wife usually fishes with my 5wt SLT.

Try a few and use what you like best. Sash weights, dumbells, or round balls work well to hold you in place (toss em out the front). If you want an anchor that will slow your drift, drag a chain from the back. Keep a knife handy at all times. Cheers.

Fished them for the first time on the Kenai a couple years ago. They out fished glo-balls by a big margin. They work here too. Our guide on the Kenai rigged them a differently though. He used an up eye hook and attached the hook to the leader with a snell. Then he popped the bead on the line and attached it to the leader with a loop to loop connection. After that he tied a nail knot the appropriate distance above the hook, then pegged the bead and slide it down to the nail knot. He said it worked better than the standard toothpick, cuz the nail knot wont let the bead slide down on hook. He seamed to think that his clients didnt catch as much when the bead slide down to far. The loop connection was there so he could change bead colors quickly w/o shortenting the leader. Its not a fly but a great lure, Phil can you make them "legal" on the Nanek by tying some thread on the hook?

Its a good area, but its often crowded, you fished it mid-day, and you didnt cover much ground. Second hand water near an access point is rarely productive on a warm summer Saturday. Spend some time getting to know the place, get there first, be there last, or lower your expectations. Cheers.

I'd agree. Law enforcement officers can make your life miserable if you give them a reason to (and some dont need a reason). Be polite and comply with reasonable requests but dont let them walk all over your rights. My Uncle who served in law enforcement always told me to remain calm, give them my identification, ask for cause if they want to search, keep my mouth shut, and ears open. Law enforcement officers are trained to respond to your actions with violence, and some like it...Dont give them an excuse to arrest you, beat you up, or worse. Cheers.

Probably a DT or Triangle taper with the tip cut back a couple feet.....I used to use the Wullf TT lines a lot, but I've replaced all my 5wt and up Triangle taper lines with the SA XXD. The SA XXD has a longer belly than the triangle taper so it roll casts better at distances longer than 40ft. Cheers.

Nice work, you did a good job capturing the eye of the trout, interesting composition to.

No worries, meant to put an LOL, after the class envy remark, but forgot to do it. It's private water, most choose to fly fish but bait is ok too...Most folks fly fish and C&R, but your paying by the pound, (or kill one accidentally) you pay the property manager for them and your paid reciept will allow you to transport your fish home (no limit on pay by the pound, no fishing license required).
-
I detect a bit of class envy in your posts. You pay for what you get, but its not much different than fishing in any other trout park. Though I have to admit that its usually a more pleasant experience. As for wicked huge fish..If you look for them its not hard to spot a 5lb plus fish, and occassionally you might see one or two in the 10-12lb rangs. Most of the fish run in the 15-18" range (2-3lb ave). Cheers.
-
The cost isnt outrageous...think its around $50 a day, and the prosti-trouts are ready and willing..Lots of fish if thats what you want, and some wicked huge fish too. Both are fun places to take a beginner for a couple hours. Cheers.

http://www.dnr.mo.gov/newsrel/nr07_297.htm Info on the transfer of the Presley Center...sounds like a good deal but I hope they dont make it a new river access.

Interesting...Last I heard, MDC wanted to tear down the old structure and put up something new. Guess that didnt work out and they "gave it" to DNR. I also hear that NPS is planning to put in an access at Flying W. Not sure about either initiative.
