  1. You'll probably want a 7wt for smallmouth...and 9-10wt for pike sized flies. Dont spend a fortune on the 9-10wt cuz you wont need it much around here..Floating lines for both, and an extra spool setup to toss shooting heads....slow sink, medium sink, fast sink...Or bring a spinning rod. Tyger wire works pretty well..as for the rest...Buy Pike on the Fly, and Tim Holshlag's Fly Fishing for Smallmouth book. Too much to cover on an internet forum. Hope you have a great trip.
  2. Everything you need is right here. http://www.boundarywaterscatalog.com/browse.cfm/2,113.html
  3. I can round up that yellow kayak and a case of Bud-Light if you want to give it a go;>)! He almost rolled that one too... Dumbest I've ever seen...coupla drunks ejected from a jet boat w/o the kill switch engaged. About ten seconds of terror on the water till that boat beached itself....wonder why my wife refuses to float below Powdermill anymore.
  4. Ouch! Here's one from the archives....February...Temps in the single digits.
  5. Put it back together this weekend. Cant wait to float it.

Good for you...I need to get out.
  7. Havent tried that one yet Mitch....but looking forward to it....I like that black bear hair model with the rabbit for the tail.
  8. Sound like a great trip! 18" bows are scarce there...but its the feature fish. Browns......are hard to come by mid-day...and most live downstream of Blair Bridge. Always some good ones up above though. Hope to make it down to Sunburst later this year and float from Sunburst down to Justin & Amy's new place above Dawt...Pretty hard to avoid catching a brown trout on that stretch. Thanks for the report.
  9. You will be waiting weeks for a repair...My Abu Soron and Plueger President have been trouble free...and they get used hard..get wet...tossed in the canoe, exposed to sand, mud......used in freezing temperatures. Shimano's might be fine for bass boat use...if maintained...kept dry...but they dont work for me. Dont sink more money into a dog of a river fishing reel. They are great out of the box, but the tolerances must be too tight to put up with river use.
  10. Wish I had a $1 bill for every Shimano Spinning reel that binds and grinds. Every one I've owned in the past 10-15 years has bound up within a season or two so I dont buy them anymore. Chuck it, and buy and Abu or a Plueger. Sorry they burned you too.
  11. Looks like lots of fun.Good for you two. I haven't seen Tim in awhile..but he's a great guy.
  12. That was my go to fly, and I only brought 1, LOL!
  13. Thanks Gents...Griz I may take you up on that offer I'm in no hurry...Think I replaced the worst rot...and the rest looks solid enough for now. Should have it back together tomorrow.
  14. $7 a day isnt bad in comparisson to lots of states..
  15. Picked it up last week...and making some progress..Bought a big jug of some 303 like substance from Alpine Shop,,,and it took all the oxidation off...and nothing will stick to the hull...tape,..linseed oil...nothing..A couple pics..
  16. By abuse...I'm referring to illegal harvest and lousy agricultural land use...Pretty common to find the remains of short bass & goggs, the remains of bass taken out of season, eroded treeless mudbanks, and cattle in the river. Its still a pretty river in spots, but it doesnt fish as well as it could outside of the special management area. Good luck. .
  17. I'd camp at Lane...nice CG...plenty of little spring seeps between 63 and Lane Spring..beat the bush on down to the creek and fish as much creek as you are willing too...roam around. Crayfish are very abundant in that creek. Lots of little gold & black ones...some bigger olive & brown ones...No need for small flies..Have fun.
  18. The Big Piney is much abused....and some spots are safer than others...I'd probably fish the Mason to Ross Stretch...fair fishing bass up to 15"...I'd avoid Eastgate access below FLW....Lots of meth head activity...do not leave a vehicle there.
  19. Those are some awesome catches! Good for you! There are probably some spring holes around NRO. They probably arent huge.....but fish seek thermal refuge when it gets hot, or really cold.
  20. I'm not worried about folks who choose to carry a weapon. That is their business, not mine. I dont care either way...Carry or dont. Its up to you. No right or wrong about it.
  21. Dunno for sure if rubber skirts on spinnerbaits & buzzers are illegal...I use silicone rubber to tie some rubber legs on perfectly legal flies...I dont worry much....my hair tied spinners, buzzers, and jigs...work just fine anywhere. Cant remember the last time I tossed a teeny Rebel Wee Craw..Effective...you catch everything..but its not selective...If you want to catch....15" fish....consistantly...you need to up the anti to the 3.5"-5" range..bottom, middle or top.
  22. Glad your back too Pete...catcha biggun!
  23. Great to see you back Bman...been awhile!
  24. I use bass sized hair and marabou jigs instead of plastic...Plus I tie bucktail skirts and rabbit strip trailers on spinner baits and buzzbaits. Your favorite hard baits will work to. Might even catch yourself a big brown trout.
  25. Thinking its a Mad River Slipper made between 1986-1992 or so...14'8" similar to the Wenonah Vagabond (that I regret selling) ...Looking forward to floating this one.
