  1. Sorry about your friend JD.
  2. What are some things to consider when shopping for an "all purpose sort of" cheap Kayak? I've been thinking of getting one, and would like it to be one that isn't completely open (one that you slip into, as opposed to ones that don't cover your legs) but I also want to be able to occasionally fish right out of it while on the river, as opposed to go to make my way to a gravel bar or something, get out, and then fish.
  3. Funny I was just about to post about those accesses Al mentioned in the other Ozark section. I headed out to those 3 accesses (Brown's Ford, Merril Horse, and Mammoth) just today to explore some fishing spots. First 2 are not exactly made for bank fishing, Mammoth at least today, with some slower spots and a few more open areas compared to the first 2, was a little better. But I didn't catch anything there either, rough fish or not so rough.
  4. I heard that's supposed to start in May. But not sure if they put in any other fish before that. Hope it wouldn't be too slim pickings. I really need to catch some fish again.
  5. When do they start stocking fish at Bush once winter is over? And if they started already what kind did they stock already?
  6. I would say breaking random throughout the day.
  7. Went out yesterday here (St. Louis) at Lower Meramec Park to get a piece of the action but failed. Not sure what kind, but plenty of fish were really active, weather was awesome, bite (for me at least) on the other hand was nonexistent.
  8. They have, but generally large scale climate change trends along timeframes not even quite as drastic as this one is heading towards have also all to frequently been followed by some serious mass extinctions, population bottlenecks, and just in general drastic changes in the environment. May not affect us much cause we live someplace where we got our stuff together, but just keep in mind, it might be too late to become a "born-again" believer only once you personally have something at stake.
  9. I'm pretty sure he was already well off enough that he didn't need that to be his money maker. But it would be nice if something other than money would get people going. However, unfortunately money will end up being the only thing that will cause change, cause momentarily it's not cheap admitting and doing something about it. Then again it will probably get more expensive the longer we wait, just that the alternative which is currently cheap, will become much more expensive than doing something later on. But as folks have said, we're burning through some deposits of several geological era's. We're putting back in stuff that was sequestered through not one, but several era's each millions of years long in a much shorter timeframe. Certainly not all from each era (yet), but it's enough to change things. It won't be the end of the world, but it really would help a lot of organisms, probably including us, if we try to figure out a way to do it in a more gradual form. Cause earth has had much more CO2 in the atmosphere than now, but it always helped that it was a more gradual change.
  10. Awesome stuff. I hate flying but especially loved seeing the view from the pictures taken while flying. What kind of precautions you guys take with the bears. Is there someone with some serious firepower hanging out in the background in case they come charging, or are you guys even more relaxed than I expect?
  11. True that Justin.
  12. I disagree on the NOTHING to do with humans part. We were able to put a big dent in the ozone layer with some chemicals used for refrigirants in just a few decades, we have been able to cut down a heap of forest and kill off a heap of animals in the past 100 years. All of these are significant things humans have managed to do. Why then are we unable to contribute upping the temperature at a faster pace than it otherwise would've, with the 3 or so billion extra human population on this earth in just the last 50 years, along with a whole heap more cars than there used to be (apparently at least a billion on the road by now), and a heap more livestock that we have around to feed us. No easy fix for sure, since people including myself like to eat (meat specifically) and be able to get someplace in a reasonable amount of time, but to say it's all natural just cause Al Gore said otherwise and profited off of it, I don't see the logic in that.
  13. Something so comforting about hearing some frogs/toads in the summer. Especially after a refreshing rain.
  14. Wondering if anybody went out in the nice weather yesterday and if so, how it went. I headed out first to check out the Bourbeuse for the first time, right by 44 (Uehlmeyer Access), and had no luck there, though I didn't get to stay long. Afterwards I ended up checking out Catawissa CA (boy, Catawissa is surprisingly rural for being that close to the St. Louis area. I've seen small towns 3 times as far look feel like they're closer to St. Louis than it. Kind of interesting). Checked out the strip pits there. Looks like it has potential WHEN good size fish populate it from the Meramec overflowing, but yesterday I didn't see a single fish larger than a small bluegill in there and even that one was the exception. Anyone have any luck there before? Or at the Uehlmayer Access? Anyways, neither place is technically on the Meramec, but they're close. Also headed out for a little today at Unger Park, but didn't stay very long cause the weather was starting to get chilly by that time of the day.
  15. Yeah some things are pretty stupid. I remember an example in Environmental Politics I think, when I took that class in school, where some paper mill or something of the sort, that was treating their waste-water pretty good, ended up changing that process and in turn ended up polluting at a greater level, just to get tax cuts or a government subsidy for having only a certain percentage of the undesired pollutant (apparently they didn't qualify until they started making the process dirtier than it had been.) Talk about the wrong approach to being green.
  16. I tried those vanilla/caramel/coconut ones (don't remember their name), and I've been thinking the same thing. Those things are addictive.
  17. Yep. Doesn't hurt to be reminded of that from time to time.
  18. Yeah, as far from a morning person as I am, coupled with the 100 mile drive, I don't see myself getting there prior to 9 anytime soon. Thing was, it was kind of quiet for most of the day, and it wasn't like everyone was catching them, so that made me feel good at first, but slowly but surely people were racking them up. Which kind of started getting to me, with not a single bite the entire day, aside from those 2 I reeled in. But yeah it was one of those pride days, where I had it set up in my mind that I was at least going to get several more bites with the roostertails first, before resorting to anything else. Anyways here's a pic of my top prize of the day, the Red Ribbon one.
  19. I finally went there today. It was actually better than I expected crowd-wise. I like the scenery, though the place is a bit smaller than I thought it would be. I got there probably around noon, checked out the hatchery section and did the food pellet thing first. Was psyched, after seeing how many there were in the rearing pools, especially the one with the smaller ones. Thought for sure I'd come back home with 4 of them on the stringer at least. As usual I had a little too much faith in my fishing prowess. Fished the whole time with roostertails of varying colors (I should've just swallowed my pride and started using the dough bait, and whatever else, but I just wanted to catch them my way). Finally 2 hours in, I reached the long pool just upstream of the bathrooms and tossed out a different roostertail, and bam, hooked one. Reeled it in, pulled the line up, and it shook itself off the hook. Didn't matter all that much to me, as it was just average stocker size, and I was thinking of letting that one go anyways, it being the first one of the day. Another 2 hours+ later I reached the bridge where the red ribbon area starts with not a single additional bite to show for it. I was feeling pretty stupid letting that first one go. Went down to the red ribbon area and started casting right where the 2 rivers/creeks merge. Not long into that, I caught my 2nd one on another roostertail (firetiger color I believe). This one was bigger, but still probably under the 15" requirement to keep. Just as feisty as the first and almost hooked me in the hand while I was grabbing it to unhook. Anyways, after that one got it's bearings back and swam off, and I gave up on catching any more there, I went back upstream along the opposite bank and around to the other bank again, to end the day with nothing more to show for it. I'll be back though. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, for the less fishing challenged folks, it wasn't all that bad a day. I got the impression for a lot of folks it was a slow but steady kind of day. Saw some people catch a few throughout the day, one or two guys caught even more than one while I was watching. Most folks I saw had about 2 fish on their stringers.
  20. I really got to head down there soon. Been wanting to see what it's like to go there for over a year now. Maybe catch some nice fish in the process.
  21. Man, I could've went for my first time ever down there, had I not had this darn cold. Seth, how much space was there between anglers?
  22. Rod, you had any luck at Allenton since then? And did you do it fishing from shore or from boat?
  23. I checked out Allenton Access first time today. Not the best opportunity to fish from the shore, but it was peaceful at least. Ended up scouting around the place a good chunk of the time, and during the actual fishing I just skunked out. Guess it was still too cold. Only other person I saw today, was some guy in his truck, when I got there. Left soon after, but then came back some hours later, and just hung out in his truck for an hour before leaving again. Found that kind of odd/suspicious. Had me wondering what his deal was. Anyways, I do think I saw one wake that was probably a fish. I think I'll check it out again when it's warmer, hopefully have some luck then.
  24. What's the rush in that? People will remain addicted to the recoil. If not, they will still need to learn how to load the missiles and ammo into their drone.
  25. Pretty cool show. For some reason, it and Swamp People always get me glued to the tv.
