  1. I guess either way, nothing much to do but wait. Sure won't be buying anything but 22lr at these prices. Finally saw a box of 9mm a week back at Walmart too. Unfortunately not much else. The Tula stuff, not great, but nice to see something in a caliber I shoot there again, even if it was the last box.
  2. Man, I hope this price hike and lack of availability ends soon. I already see practically new members at gun forums putting ammo for sale at ridiculous prices. Maybe I'm too malicious but I'm kind of hoping the folks that bought that stuff up in heaps, just to get a nice profit from reselling it a few weeks later, end up not being able to make a profit off of it.
  3. Yeah, we can't have it both ways. If you don't want your right infringed, may as well help make sure that some kid without the benefit of careful parents, has a fair chance not to blow themselves or a sibling away when their parents exercise the same right.
  4. Doing any fishing there in China, Goggle Eyed?
  5. I don't see what the big fuss is. If it helps prevent some kid from shooting his/her brother/sister, then it obviously benefits both kids, the family, and the school district. After all, some kid's parents are about as careful from keeping a loaded firearm out of the hands of their kids, as Homer SImpson (loaded revolver in the vegetable drawer in the fridge).
  6. I normally hunt and fish on my own. I actually ended up going on my first ever float down the Meramec (in a kayak) by myself, because everyone else that promised to go, ended up bailing out last minute, and I just got sick of pushing it back all the time (on top of that my dumbass ended up deciding on the longer 10 mile float for my first ever such trip on the Meramec and 2nd ever in my life, think it was from Onondoga to Blue Springs Ranch). Thankfully nothing happened to date, and especially the float trip I enjoyed greatly, but I know not one time was it a smart idea. But I've also learned that if I were to wait on people to be able or willing to go along, I'd barely ever get to do anything remotely outdoorsy. I almost got lost twice while out hunting, once during a managed deer hunt and one just regular one in the summer. I'm definitely a fan of the compass. I got temporarily lost twice for an hour or so, while out hunting. Managed to get my bearing and find my way back. 2nd time wasn't so much lost as having left my heavy bag on a ridge from which I decided to explore a little (turned out a lot) and then I went looking for about an hour or two to find that exact ridge, and my backpack (so family doesn't freak when they don't hear from me at nightfall, even though I knew how to get back to the car, just happened to have left the keys in the bag too). Anyways, all turned out well. Compass helped a lot. As I noted the ridge was so-and-so directionally facing before I left to explore. Definitely learned a lesson from that one. Now I don't stray far without that backpack. So I don't have to look for it like an idiot. But yeah, there's plenty of places to break an ankle or leg out there.
  7. I keep a very basic first aid kit, the occasional box of matches (along with old newspaper and stuff to burn), blankets, tarps, and handtools and gallon or two of water in my car in case I break down somewhere where I have to tough it out for a day or two, and around the house, along with some more prepared stuff in my hunting/hiking backpack, but I can't say it's anywhere near as efficient as yours. On that note, any of you guys get lost in the woods while going out fishing/floating/hiking or on a hunting trip?
  8. That part of it is pretty ridiculous.
  9. Man, that's a heck of a bass. Next time, go to a fish market first, find the largest fish they got, and attach it to your hook and toss it out when they're not watching. It's what I would do, haha. Just make sure it's not a clearly Saltwater only fish.
  10. I agree F&F, there is a clear bias to this, but I think it stems from the idea that no one intentionally hits another car while being a drunk driver. Unfortunately in most of those cases the drunk is relaxed enough to come out in a lot better shape than anyone in the other car, but still the mindset is that he didn't intentionally do this, because it's a clear risk to his own life if nothing else. Someone shooting a gun during the course of a crime, won't have people seeing things that way.
  11. Too true. However, it rattles more nerves when it's a gun they're doing this with, and I can see the reason why. At least when they do this crap with cars and motorcycles, something resembling reason in it's infancy occasionally runs through their mind, because it occurs to them, they're actually at risk themselves. Not so much in that instance seeing how it's just someone in the apartment over that has to worry about the most lifethreatening consequences of them being an idiot.
  12. Yeah I couldn't find the entire one for the AK, but I did see it when it started out before it caught fire. Just wouldn't let me find that entire video. As to the AR and AK altogether, that's entirely the point I'm trying to make. They're not meant to be used for continuous automatic fire, as I was mentioning to fishingwrench. And even though that's a lot of rounds still down the pipe before they started burning, it doesn't take a burning handguard for the gun to be too hot to hold to continue firing it, when you don't have a vice or rest like the one in the AR video.
  13. Quill, I dung you not. Here's 1 with M16 type. And here's one with AK type. And this is one of someone who most definitely shouldn't be allowed to own anything that requires an ounce of responsibility, much less an AK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRog34CZTwo I don't know why the last link isn't embedded but paste it and check it out anyways, if you want some giggles/ or a feeling of despair.
  14. And possibly what other prisoners end up doing to you while in prison. Still, just cause Marijuana may have caught a tough break, doesn't mean semi auto's fed by higher cap magazines (i.e. assault rifles to some) should too, provided there's a little more scrutiny involved so as not to allow quite as many unstable people from getting them with ease.
  15. And less people have probably died from it too. Though, apparently in Washington state it isn't any more. Still, if we're going to compare it to Marijuana, then I'd like to suggest we look at the semi auto "assault rifles" as cigarettes (hate to look at them as cigarettes, semi auto rifles I consider plenty better thing to spend money on). Not as potent as the full auto or burst versions, and still legal.
  16. Even full auto assault rifles aren't supposed to be shot full auto for prolonged amount of time. That's the job of squad machine guns, which if I understand right, the BAR was used as, and probably could handle about as much continuous rapid fire as the average assault rifle at least. There is footage of people shooting AK's or M16's full auto or rapid semi auto and after several magazines the handguards and stuff literally catch on fire. Assault rifle rapid fire is meant to make it safer to close the distance while assaulting. Not to continue firing it full automatic endlessly. Actually most newer models of assault weapons don't even have the full auto capability anymore. They something like 3 round burst, after which you got to pull the trigger again. I'll give you that primarily these things were initially made to "hunt" people within 300 yard conditions instead of anything else, but that doesn't make them solely useful for just that.
  17. I love shooting my "assault rifle". For one the kind I got, made it much more economical to shoot for fun than a lot of other rifles and even a good chunk of pistols short of something in 22lr (now with ammo demand and prices up into outer space that's momentarily not so), the reliability of it certainly provides some peace of mind, the few accessories I bother to get for it were comparatively cheap, and lastly, it looks cool (there's the completely dumb reason everyone was waiting to hear). Aside from maybe reliability and magazine capacity, it doesn't perform as well as any one particular less controversial gun type (not as concealable or useful up close as a pistol, not as accurate and powerful as a real hunting rifle especially further out, and not as easy to point and shoot out to medium range (50-75 or so yards for me) as a shotgun (maybe if the shotgun has slugs the advantage does tilt to the rifle but I don't know). However as to the basic question as to why someone would want a firearm like that, I would say because on a budget it tends to incorporate so many of the good qualities from all the other gun types that it makes it quite versatile. That being said, I can see why it would cause people to be even more uneasy in the presence of someone with one, than a firearm of another type, especially with all the reckless, stupid, and even unstable individuals that easily manage to get a hold of guns without any sense of responsibility. I don't think there's a gun rights advocate here, that wouldn't feel the same sense of extra unease when encountering and having to turn their back to such an individual when holding a gun like that. Especially when you don't have the same type of firepower on you at the time. Obviously when stuff like the recent shooting happens you got to take some things into perspective, so I'll admit this, I wouldn't mind being inconvenienced with more stringent/thorough background checks (including looking into potentially unstable family members being taken into consideration of you having that gun) regardless of what rifle I buy, but especially semi autos frequently fed by high capacity magazines, IF one the flip side that would ensure that the "ban assault weapons" crowd wouldn't single these weapons out like they're custom made in hell (and for the most part simply due to non-technical superficial reasons like "ohh, it looks dangerous because it has a pistol grip and the barrel is threaded to allow some type of device on the muzzle" or even something dumber like considering iron sights one of the no more than 2 features that automatically make a gun a weapon of mass destruction.) I also don't consider it unreasonable to only be able to have a set amount of higher cap mags in possession (though that seems really difficult to regulate), and to be able to get in hot water for carrying more than a set amount of loaded high cap magazines per rifle while driving somewhere even if it isn't in the rifle itself. Anyways just wanted to mention how I feel about the situation. I'm not against adopting some added measures to prevent idiots intent on doing something similar with such a rifle, even if the frequency they get used in these situations isn't already high. And I am open to some restrictions on magazine capacity as long as it's not completely trying to take advantage of the situation to make it very unreasonable. But at the same time I think it's stupid to outright ban these types of rifles altogether, especially by people that just about never bother to educate themselves on these firearms before they judge them as if they're made in hell.
  18. Interesting stuff for sure.
  19. I headed out that Saturday for a little bit myself, on the Meramec near Hwy 21. Caught nothing and saw nothing. Water was rising and getting dingy there too though.
  20. I went to Castlewood (couldn't find my way to Sherman Beach) for 2 hours a few days ago, and then for 2 and a half hours yesterday at Lower Meramec Park. Got 1 bite on the 2nd one, but that's about it. I thought yesterday fish would be going crazy with the warm weather, but short of one wake real late in the day, there was nothing. Which is weird cause the Lower Meramec park one is normally pretty lively by seasonal standards.
  21. Cool. Thanks for the ideas guys. I might hit up some of the specialized fishing/hunting stores and get me some that way. If all else fails, I'll go with patfish's approach. Thanks guys.
  22. I was trying to go out yesterday, and all the ones I checked out seemed pretty much 100% ice covered. Ended up skunking out on the Missouri at Weldon Springs instead.
  23. Good info about that Lone Elk Reservoir guys. I definitely wouldn't mind hooking into some big carp. The river carpsucker or buffalo I accidentally snagged on the dorsal fin near the end of last winter turned into the toughest fish I landed to date. I'd bet the carp would be reminding me of that quite a lot. Smalliebigs, thanks man. if the weather cooperates I'm hoping to try Sherman Beach out today. I don't frequently get to go to Castlewood but the scenery is really nice there, and I do remember you guys talking about Sherman Beach before. I looked it up a while back, but haven't got myself over there yet to try. Hopefully I can find the time to go tomorrow. Probably won't catch anything though. I'd like to rest the blame solely on the Meramec, but I know a lot of it is my making too, haha. I did end up going yesterday to the Missouri River at the Weldon Springs CA Access to try my luck out there. Was planning on going to Bush CA in hopes of getting some trout to cooperate since I figured they'd be more up for it, than fish on the Meramec, but just about all the lakes I checked out there were still completely covered with ice, so I do a little exploring. I have to say the Weldon Springs access is not bad for fishing from the bank either. Unfortunately I didn't so much as see a single sign of fish activity there yesterday. I'm definitely thinking of checking it out again in summer though.
  24. Hey do you guys know if they sell any of the single-hook in-line spinners and other lures within Meramec Springs Park that you need during the C&R season or where you can get those if they don't. The closest spot I can find any is my local walmarts, but I feel like I'd want a larger size one than the ones they're offering there with the single hooks.
  25. Hey Smalliebigs, do you know if that reservoir in Lone Elk has any fish in it, and if so if it's open to public fishing? I don't remember if someone has talked about it before but seeing it on the map got me wondering. Also, what's it like fishing on the lone Elk side of the river. Seems like there would a lot more solitude on that side. Though the banks right across from the beach at Castlewood are kind of steep.
