Shortening trolling motor shaft
fishinwrench replied to wily's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Not working this weekend but we'll be around. If I know when you'll be wheeling in I'll make sure that myself (or someone) is here. Just call or hit me with a text when you know for sure. -

I can make yours just like mine for quite a bit less than you could buy a new trailer. Can't say for sure what the end cost will be until I could look it over in person, but even if you bought a brand new one it would have to be customized to fit the boat. Drop it off and I'll fix you up. -

Pretty much the same trailer I have my little jet Jon on. Notice the set back. Everything is balanced perfectly. -

You don't need a new trailer, that's a good sturdy frame, it just needs a bit of reconfiguring and maybe a bigger set of wheels/tires (are those 12" wheels?). You can move the axle above the springs if it sets too high with taller tires. Some fender repair, proper bunks, a fresh light harness, and some paint. That's all it needs. Drag the boat off into the yard and get busy! You can lengthen the rear bunks 8" and scoot everything back a bit, should still have plenty of tongue weight. The winch stand is mounted all wrong and needs to be readjusted, which you'll be able to do once the rear bunks are extended. -

I'll keep an eye out, but honestly I'm pretty stingy with good trailers. They are at a premium and sell fast, so anytime I can snatch one up I'll freshen it up and make as much on it as I possibly can. Post a pic so I can see what you have to work with. -

Ha! I knew that'd do it. -
Oh God, don't call them THAT or I'm outa here! I haven't shot an air rifle (seriously) since I was 8-9 years old. Had a Daisy 880 and bullfrogs were the game of choice. My dad wouldn't let me use the 4x scope that came with it because he wanted me to master iron sights first. That old pump gun shot BB's better than it did pellets. I couldn't hit crap with pellets but with BB's there wasn't a safe bullfrog or starling anywhere near me back then. I got it taken away for a month for shooting a bluejay in our front yard, and if it hadn't been for Mom I would have had to clean and eat it.
-
Oh they'll definitely eat it. Was out yesterday just for a quickie before going to the inlaws and had 2 solid keepers and 5 shorts. Once you start playing with it you'll be blown away by how shallow some of the better fish are. Give at least 3-5 casts to each spot where you think there might be one. One to wake them up, Two to piss them off, Then two more to allow them an opportunity to chase it down and eat it. Swim it kinda slow with lots of short hard jerks.

I was just funnin'....I think. I have 4 boats and 3 trucks though, so the shipping might cost 20 bucks. -

Yep, trailers made specifically for 14 footers are always cheesy. Get a 16' trailer with the heavier frame and cut it down. -

Oh I bet you've got more money to piss away than I do. Shitimbroke! A new set of shafts and bearings is gonna be well over a Benjamin, and it's a 4 hour ordeal for ME, and I've done well over a dozen of them. What's your time worth? Then 2 weeks after you swap the shafts you know darn well you'll break a cable or fry that tired speed switch or motherboard. Then where are ya? Trust me, I'm giving you solid advise. -

I posted up a dang business card in this thread for cryin' out loud ! I don't think Phil likes me all that much. I'm too rough around the edges, and a perpetual limit pusher. Let this be a learning experience to all who don't tow the line 'round here. As you shall not proudly wear the colors. Your existence may be tolerated but the level of excommunication hangs over you like a heavy cloud, blocking the Golden Ray's of fellowship. Learn from my mistakes people, this is a lonely corner that you don't wanna stand in, and you can't buy yourself out of it. The scarlet letter states "unworthy", and I think it is everlasting. -

I'm beginning to feel like an outcast. I have no OAF bling. How much does a man have to pout around here? -

I think I understand your situation. In all reality though 12v TM's are a heck of a bargain, especially the Endura series. Rather than spend the money on a new shaft and go through all that hassle I'd just buy a new short shaft unit and call it a day. Or even better.... Upgrade to a wireless unit for less than 200 more, and kiss the whole foot control cable/harness issue goodbye for good. That way you can operate the TM from anywhere in the boat with either a remote foot pedal, or a key fob controller clipped to your belt or on a lanyard around your neck. I had a Motorguide 12v wireless on a flyfishing flats boat I rigged and that thing was sweet ! -
I've seen them. I may be on the wrong track but a 2 piece pellet doesn't appeal to me. Some experience may teach me otherwise, but for starters I think I want solid lead with most of the weight up front. It's gonna be hard to throw everything I know about center-fire and archery ballistics out the window.

If it is a 2 piece shaft (foot controlled unit) then Nope it can't be done. Not reasonably anyway. If it is a hand control (single piece shaft) then it's no problem, whack away. -
Something about this board plays havoc with Oldplugs posts. He emails me frequently and the emails never have weirdness like his posts here do.

Plug, he hasn't had any treatments in his life, other than a shot of antibiotic and some Benadryl tablets for a snake bite. His momma and daddy, and Grandma (now passed on) are/were right next door, and all of them are/were free of any muscular disease or any other abnomalities.

Awesome, thanks. I have read that it takes quite a few rounds to get the barrel tinned and shooting consistent. So hitting it with some solvent right away helps speed that process up ? I hope it doesn't take 1000 rounds to settle in. That's rediculous. A hundred or so after a good solvent scrub will hopefully be enough.

I've always felt that there was something "going on" with him. Every other Lab I've had, or been around, has been a joy to train and was never this "difficult". This peckerwood has been a struggle from day one. Like ADHD and OCD type behavior all rolled into one. If he is inside (confined) he'll do anything you tell him to, but anytime there is even the slightest bit of an element of distraction..... you've just lost him. Good natured and loads of fun, but a total PIA to take anywhere.
-
You would assume that is the muscle that causes his ears to perk up....but he can still do that just fine. Damnedest thing I've ever seen. I dunno.
-
It hasn't. If you feel the actual skull structure it is the same on both sides. Above that on both sides is muscle tissue. The muscle on one side of his head has just suddenly, and for no apparent reason, just collapsed.

I'm actually leaning towards a 7 footer that has just enough tip to cast it good but is otherwise pretty darn stiff. When I pump the rod with my wrist I really want the bait to pulse hard with as less forward movement as possible (if that makes sense). Long sweeps aren't where it's at in cold water, it's those short but violent bursts that seem to trigger the most bites. Plus I'm fishing it with a high rod tip so a slower more flexible rod (like most consider a good crankbait rod) just doesn't get the hooks stuck good right away. In warmer water when I'm smacking rocks and stumps with it I like a faster 6.3-1 reel, but in the cold I've gone back to the old 5.3-1 round reel, and line just heavy enough to cause a hesitation on the fall rate when I give a pause.
