I don't see the fake. I see nothing in the picture that is in focus, as is often the case with trail cameras. There's also the almost perfect flash intensity on the cat that would be hard to duplicate.
I agree with Justin, what would be the point of faking it? It isn't exactly something unbelievable or even rare anymore.
Again, few if any game management agencies are able to manage cougars, the US deer population has exploded, so you add little to no predation and lots of food and you get lots of cats. Add in the fact that male cats must find a territory of their own and you have a spreading population of cougars. This has been going on in the west for over a decade and the males are running out of room there.
