  1. While I agree in principal, this year is an exception I believe. Whites need a good strong flow to have a successful spawn, and this year seems to be one of those. If the spawn this year is exceptionally successful, the increase in numbers could keep numbers high for years, even when the flow isn't what it should be.
  2. I would imagine that all the power is off in the campground if some of them are under water. One might go up Devils Teatable road and walk into the creek. I wouldn't drive, its all dirt, or mud. You might also find them up Swan if you drive up stream. You can get there by turning left as you come into town from the west, don't remember the name, but its the first one after 176.
  3. I'm not sure what the official name is, but I was thinking of the new gates they put in. I was wondering if there is a preset pool height that will dictate they open? Does anyone know if there is a limit in water level they will allow for Taneycomo if they do open?
  4. I would think TR would be in the same shape that early. I can think of alot of islands and low points that will probably be submerged for a while.
  5. Have they opened the overflows? At what level will they open them? It appears they are running out of storage capacity.
  6. Why do you suppose they aren't seen below Taney, unless its a well kept secret?
  7. This hasn't been our experience with Alltel. My wife is a Traveling RN and we have yet to find any place that it hasn't worked. We have had problems with dropped call on my phone in AZ, but thats because it wants to switch towers at this particular point. I got around that by using an antenna on the RV. My wifes Q doesn't have that problem. The only place locally that it hasn't worked was in Tyler Bend, but it works in the middle of nowhere out west? We pay about a $100 for 2 phones, unlimited calls and the wifes data connection. We have NO roaming charges and we haven't had from southern AR to the panhandle of NB to the Mohave Desert. I would find someone in your area and get some input there, obviously everyones experience isn't the same.
  8. If I'm not mistaken, Trailers on the James is Hootentown. The outfitter is to the right of the road and the access to the left.
  9. Did the river get high enough to do any damage at Cowskin or the access?
  10. Did anyone get a look at the Fork?
  11. You have a choice of fiber weedguards when pouring you own. It gives you some control over the stiffness and you can match it to your fish and waters. I don't powder coat many heads any more. I hang them on a metal coat hanger, spray them with primer, and then with a dull camo color. I've been using the rattle cans from Wal mart with good results. I like the looks of the browns.
  12. Out is right, its where many take out, but it doesn't hurt the fishing that much. The fish from Bennett down are used to some activity, it just makes them a little more wary.
  13. I bought a plain mold and used a jig saw blade to make a groove for a wire guard. You can buy the blades in specific widths to fit a wire diameter. Stainless wire, meant for leaders, in .013 to .018 works well. I like the slimmer wire for smaller jigs. Put a dogleg on the end for safety.
  14. I think Taney could benefit from another species, one that offered more size combined with better creel numbers. I don't however think the lake is capable of supporting one. It already has the remnants of warm water species and they are probably at the peak of there density. If you bring in Wipers, Striper's can't really be controlled that well, what do they feed on? They were originally brought in to control shad populations that grew too large for the native fish to control.
  15. Do you fish the section from the dam to Hermitage much?
  16. I haven't been up that way all year, haven't been east of there either. Oh well there's always next spring.
  17. I never anchor in a flow in the Yak, but I do sometimes to hold me in shallow water. I use a 3# dumbell from Wal Mart, I think they're about $3.
  18. When I was a kid in North Missouri, fence rows were the best place to hunt rabbits and quail because they were as much as 20', 10' either side of the fence, and great cover. Even pastures had fence rows and every creek or gully was wooded. I know thats long past now, unfortunately.
  19. I can't speak for other states, but In Missouri thats not true. Farms haven't crept to the edge of streams, but developments, golf courses and condos have. The state DNR isn't free of guilt either in this assault. There's a new addition west of Branson that has literally scalped a ridge and a hollow to bare earth and I can just imagine what the runoff will be when they replant it in their idea of the "Country Life"?
  20. I reminisce, but the densest population of water snakes I've ever seen was on Roaring River between the F bridge and the old lake. This was when this section was unimproved and very brushy. The largest number of Cottonmouths was when Arbuckle lake in Oklahoma was flooded. There was a creek to the east of the lake that was virtually inaccessible because of the brush and plum thickets, and it was apparently home to many Cottonmouths. They were pretty common in the flooded timber when it was first flooded, but as man invaded the arm they gradually left for quieter areas.
  21. A secret launch site huh?
  22. I think the absence of snakes has a lot to do with the increase in human activity, they don't like us either. I haven't seen a lot of Cottonmouths, and I can only think of one area where I've seen them in the water. They're certainly not aggressive and I wonder why someone on here, some time back, said he went armed to Crane Creek? There's a King snake that is very close in appearance to Copperheads. When we lived on an acreage in Laclede county we had a good population of these, and I always had to look twice.
  23. Personally I think this is a waste of our money, I believe they should have cut the daily limit accordingly.
  24. If you're referring to marinas prohibiting fishing within a certain distance, as far as I know its a Corp regulation that gives them the right. word is its fueled by a concern for safety around commercial marinas.
  25. Boat capacity is misleading. A Jon boat has a rating that will float it, a motor, and X amount of weight, full of water. A canoe has a rating of how many pounds of anything will sink it to the half way mark. Basically what its saying is that if you fill your boat up with water, it will sink, unless you get out of it. I said Halogens, should have said Mercury vapors or Sodiums.
