  1. You must have a secret mic, the pet fish that hug the bank looking for food stirred up by waders or guts thrown in get pounded and seldom hooked. .
  2. I can't really comment on the Loon or the wolf, but I agree with bugle and I would add the cougar scream to that.
  3. That one would be after my time in the area. I wonder if it could be nutmeg? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but I've never tried it in a rub.
  4. Better to be safe than sorry, but you already knew that.
  5. It is possible to wade most of it judging by the level now, but some areas might be tricky. You never know when high water will scour out an area that was waded. It will continue to improve if the forecast holds. Best thing is to talk to the people at Larry's and Weavers for good information.
  6. I agree with F & F and you my friend are a rare breed. It's not unheard of for private docks to carry a "No fishing within 50 feet" sign. They can't enforce them, but they seem to feel that they are up there with the commercial docks. I for one feel that many docks interfere with the public's access, not all, but many do. I also agree with the 50' setback as a buffer from what ever the home owner might apply to the yard. If I lived on the lake I would want some tick defense, just as I do where I live. The setback would absorb most of the runoff.
  7. Is that at 54? It is always interesting to see what changes follow a flood. In my experience it doesn't seem to take much to change the Niangua. A big flood though will often make major changes and take down a lot of those big trees hanging precariously over the water. Where they end up is anybody's guess.
  8. Me too and I just don't see a hunt in Missouri ever being the same. For me the mountains and the snow, coupled with hard work and cougar tracks has mystic all its own. That's why I think a bow hunt or black powder would be more appropriate. At least throw some more difficulty into the hunt and take it beyond just shooting an elk.

Yes. I don't know if it was true or not, but I read that much of Phillies late problems were due to Reid being burnt out over the hassle with the organization. This was taking up time he felt he needed to address his sons problems according to the author. So maybe with his sons now on hold, one gone and one in remission, this article is true and his old abilities will shine once more.
  10. While I agree with what you're saying, I say this would be more accurate if it was 30 years. The problem I see with Bennett is in what I believe is a misguided mission. For some asinine reason there is a mentality that the park needs to increase its visitor numbers. This has been going on for quite a while now and the ridiculous part of it is that the stream has been degrading all this time. Much of the big push from the early 80's goes back to Sam Welch and Jim Rogers, Welch wanted numbers and Rogers wanted money, but in all fairness the trend started before Rogers. The canoe rental is a great example, nothing to do with fishing or the stream branch. As far as size goes that is just one more example of trying to increase visitation. People who fish want bigger fish, after all they pay for them and they are hatchery raised. I don't know when the call for a C & R section started, but it 40+ years ago. It's fallen on deaf ears and it will because it endangers the visitation numbers. The sad part is it ain't gonna change.
  11. I like Bryants, but Gates was always my favorite in front of Rosedale, at least the one from many decades back. I always liked some of Reagan's in Martin City. Bryant's delivery was always a draw. It never changed from way back and I think many younger people found it unique. BBQ exploded in KC with many trying to cash in on the cult started by the likes of Bryants, Gates and Rosedale. Many are really good and I think that is because they're in a sink or swim atmosphere, they either produce good BBQ to KC standards or they sink. Jack Stack and Zardas are a couple that come to mind that have been sucessful, but not as well known as Bryant's and Gate's.
  12. They storm today didn't seem to dump much in the Niangua watershed and the forecast is for clear weather. I wouldn't change my plans yet if it were me. It looks promising for the weekend. I think we're going up tomorrow or Wednesday.
  13. yeah and it's hard to beat the stability of SOT's for it. I wear neoprene's just in case though.
  14. Like.
  15. They're in an iffy area. I saw the Niangua about 3' below the 64 bridge back in the mid 80's. I know that back then when Chuck and Wanda Robbin's owned Ho Humm they kept there store up high and no electric in the campground, just in case.
  16. Real men fish in the cold. The first 2 weeks of November can be awesome if you know where some good holes are.
  17. I agree about the Silver Dollar City BBQ sauce, it's very good. Gates, both original and the new sweet are outstanding. I don't use enough sauce to bother making it. I do make my own rubs though and that is what I like to really flavor my smoked meat. I might use 1/3 cup of sauce late on a slab of ribs or added to a pulled butt, but that's about it.
  18. They should consider a program like the ones along roads for clean-up. Bass clubs, and other organizations could adopt a park for some trimming etc.?
  19. I would worry more about the little fish that swims up a mans penis and then lodges itself there.
  20. I hope the first ones are for bowhunters during the rut.
  21. Yeah I was headed that way tomorrow, but so is another rain storm, so?? I'm thinking with this dry spell coming it will still be 5 or 6 days before it is at a reasonable level. How did the new campground at 64 fare, did the water ever threaten their trailer area?
  22. First question. It's much easier today to learn casting then in decades past. Use the internet, especially YouTube. Critique yourself and make use of the grass pond. Eventually you will know how well your outfit serves you and whether or not you need to upgrade. You will also be able to better evaluate whether a rod that interest you is right for you. Tying is fun and certainly expands the interest. My advice beyond tying is to not discard anything because it isn't perfect and don't be afraid to experiment.
  23. Here's what many miss when it comes to floods. The Corp is very active in controlling flow, but mother nature isn't in the supply end. You build levees to direct the water and keep it where you want it confined, then mother nature throws enough water in to make the levees push the water up and flood worse in areas. In protecting some areas the levees have forced more water into areas that weren't at risk before the levees. The old farmers that farmed the big river bottoms were happy with 2 out of 3 years. The land was made so rich and re energized from floods that they made good money in spite of the floods. Corporate farms change all that, they want every year dry and public financed levees to insure it. They don't need the floods like the old timers did, they can use pumps and chemicals.
  24. When I was young I never left to go fishing without a Johnson Silver spoon. I never caught a fish on one, but according to all the magazines I was supposed too.
  25. Yup, I've seen more than one tree blocking a river. It's not common, but not all that unusual behind high water. I was in OR for a few years and there was a new class IV that popped up on the Deschutes river and ate a few boats before the word got out. The really down side was that it was about midway in a 32 miles road less stretch. After a water event like we've had you should never go into a turn without scouting, even if you have to bank to do it.
