  1. I've been on here a long time and I just don't see it. I think a topic gets shut down when people are not civil or resort to name calling. And I'm actually a conservative in most things.
  2. I appreciate the info but our plans are done. Staying in Dubois. Beautiful 2BR house for about $100/night. I've spoken to several people who say the fishing in that area is as good as anywhere in WY and much less crowded. Plus we'll still get to see the GT and yellowstone. Greg
  3. Why not just try wading? I've had some wonderful days fishing the Norfork with 0 generation. Greg
  4. Yes I agree with this. Some jobs just are not 9/5. I'm a healthcare manager and I'm more or less always on call. I've been forced several times into making work decisions stream-side. Do I like that? No but it's just a fact of life. Greg
  5. Wow what a fish!! I was out with a buddy yesterday afternoon. What a beautiful day. Fishing was just OK at the rocking chair area. We caught fish but nothing of note (size-wise). Greg
  6. I do see what you are saying. But a lot of us (including me) love those "ditches". I certainly love the Current, 11 point, and NFOW too. And I have to say that the rim shoals area of the white river sure is beautiful for a ditch. LOL. Greg
  7. OTF I enjoyed your post. I'm a fly fisherman too. Mostly for trout. I've never fished through the ice with powerbait like that. But when my kids were younger I spent many an enjoyable afternoon fishing off the Branson city docks for trout with powerbait. It was a lot of fun and not just for the kids. I'll probably do it again sometime. Greg
  8. You've gotten lots of good advice. My opinion is the first choice would be to go to a fly shop and see what they could do for you. Another good choice would be a redington outfit from cabelas. Or an outfit from bass pro. The bass pro whiteriver brand is pretty nice and so is their hobbs creek line. One other thing is that the bass pro brand of fly line is very good quality at a good price. I would get a 6 or 7 wt for what you want to do. A 6 wt would be my choice. A 7 wt would definitely throw the bigger bass flies better but would be pretty heavy for most trout stuff. You definitely want a wt forward. Take your time and have fun spending that $200. My first outfit was a scientific anglers rod and reel bought at walmart for less than 50 bucks. It worked well. I doubt if I catch any more fish on my stuff now that costs 10X as much. Greg
  9. I'd love to see browns on the 11 point. It does seem like the deep holes on this river are made to order for that species. Someone asked the question about why they stock rainbows on the 11 point when there is natural reproduction? I'm pretty sure I read that while there is definitely natural reproduction it is much less than on the NFOW. For there to be good numbers of rainbows on the 11 point supplemental stockings are necessary. Greg
  10. Nice fish!! I'll bet that SM gave quite a tussle on your flyrod. I have a 5 wt Launch. Hands down the best rod I've ever used. I agree that not all 5 wts are created equal. My Launch as enough backbone to handle the bigger flies needed for SM but still works very well for trout - even #20 dry flies over spooky wild trout. Greg
  11. That's sure interesting. Let us know what MDC says. Greg
  12. Thanks for the additional info. Much appreciated. My wife and youngest son (16) are pretty terrified of grizzlies (LOL). I have been reading up on it. Greg
  13. Thank you both. Good information. I think we are going to change to a week's stay in mid-July. OB my main reason for picking Dubois is the price of lodging. Lodging is pretty expensive in Jackson, West Yellowstone, etc. Dubois and several other towns out a bit are somewhat more affordable. It is a bit of drive to the 2 national parks but it looks doable. As long as I can fly fish for trout I'm good. Greg
  14. Thanks for the report John. Merry Christmas to you too. Greg
  15. My family and I are in the planning stages of a trip to Wyoming this coming summer. I've wanted to see yellowstone for as long as I can remember and I think this will be the year. Rough plans are to stay in Dubois (on the banks of the Wind river) and do several day trips to the grand tetons and Yellowstone. Has anyone fished the Dubois area? I hear the Wind river can be fabulous? We'll probably be staying right on the banks of this river and I'd like to fish it often. My other question is what time of year (has to be summer) is best? I know meltoff can last until well into June. We were originally planning mid June but I think we may switch to mid July? Also any suggestions for day hikes in either the grand tetons or yellowstone? With possibly some fishing somewhere along the hike? Thanks, Greg
  16. I remember watching both Virgil Ward and Harold Ensley. One of them did a show at Roaring River years ago. They were catching trout on dry flies. I remember thinking that was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Anyone else remember that one and which one (Ensley or Ward) it was? Greg
  17. The water is supposed to be off Sat and Sun so hopefully you'll have low water. Smallish scuds #16 and #18 in gray or olive always work well. And so do zebra midges 16 to #20. Good luck. Greg
  18. Thanks Dano. Greg
  19. Every year I tell myself I'm going to do more warm water fly fishing. But those danged trout always seem to lure me away and I don't do as much as I'd like. But my wife has promised me a kayak in the coming year so this may just be the year I keep my promise. PS: good luck with starting fly fishing. It is a wonderful pursuit. Greg
  20. Happy birthday to one of the best guys on this forum!! Greg
  21. Fished a few hours late afternoon today (12/23) and after dark just a bit. Water was off when I got there at 2:30 PM. Started just below the dam and waded down past rebar to the big hole. Didn't catch a thing for almost an hour. But ended up with about 10 to hand when I left at 6:30. Most all were rainbows in the 13 to 15" range. One big beautiful bow that was pushing 20". Only one dink. Beautiful day but pretty cold. But I guess that's not all bad as there were very few anglers out. Maybe 7 or 8 total that I could see. Merry Christmas to everyone. Greg
  22. It's interesting no one's really talking about the original poll? 74 votes in and 59% voted "humans have NOT had a significant impact on global warming". Interesting. I voted yes. I think emissions, CO2 gasses (manmade) and such definitely are impacting overall climate changes. But I remain a bit dubious as to exactly how much? I just don't think scientists are that sure regarding the natural processes vs manmade. I also agree with several others that a primary problem is the ever burgeoning/growing human population. Just MHO but the responsible thing would be to somehow put a limit of 2 children per couple. How you do that without trampling on everyone's civil and religious liberties is another matter. And I'm definitely not a "liberal douchebag" (for the record). Greg
  23. I have to say I don't agree with this. I can't speak for the stocked warm water lakes as I've never fished one. But I don't agree there are no similarities between fishing the trout parks and fishing for wild trout. I've fished quite a bit out west. There are some areas in CO that are more challenging than say Bennett Springs. But some streams where the fishing is easier. 2 summers ago I fished the Big Thompson outside Estes Park for a week for wild browns and rainbows. I used many of the same flies and techniques that work well at Bennett, Roaring River, and Montauk and caught plenty of trout. One day fishing the smaller, wilder and more remote waters in RMNP - I used a foam beetle that I have often in the past at Roaring River and absolutely slayed them (wild browns) that day. Greg
  24. The vise is your most expensive purchase. But you need a good one or it's easy to get frustrated. One way to get a good one pretty cheap is to check ebay. Sometimes you can find a Thompson A or Thompson B vise on there for $25 or less. Greg
  25. Anyone know the times? Greg
