  1. I like warm sunny afternoons for crappie fishing in the spring. I do not think bass are fans of sun except for a short period in the spring. I have caught most of my largest bass over or in deeper water places after the spawn is past. This only applies to LOZ however and me. I cannot help but wonder if the warm sunny days of spring do not have something to do with the fisherman himself. Al I understand those kind of days on the river. But here on the lake you have a steady dark rainy day and I would get out of my death bed to get out there.
  2. Those wind blown banks will turn cold so fast its hard to believe.I seen 43 to 40 in a matter of minutes this afternoon. Its a strange year. There must be a real mass of water in the 30s under a very thin surface temperature.
  3. I sort of throw the same old colors that resemble shad colors till I am sure its not working. my theory on that is the shad do bot change color. but in off. color water I think scent becomes more important and maybe the brighter stuff makes up for that. i do not throw them much either. right now here you got to cover a lot of water. They call it the milk run and it can eat up 20 gals of fuel in no time. I was going to fish deep today for awhile with a spoon. I found a good sized bunch staged off a point at 25 ft. they were gone today. then the wind blew me off.
  4. i would be careful what you snag in missouri
  5. Well here is what to expect. No matter where you launch. Assuming your going to be fishing for bass. It is still about the milk run system using rouges. I do not do that. That kind of fishing is for younger men with thick gas wallets. As of today a lot of the gravois is in the very low 40s. It may be a bit better back in the larger coves. I went up in a few yesterday and the warmest I found was 43 degrees. If there is wind the the lake temperature can drop in minutes. That is because the warm water is vert thin on top of some real cold stuff that the wind bring up. I started to go out today before the wind came up hoping to see a few degrees warming back in the coves. The temperature was about 42 to 43 degrees up in Cedar creek. Then the wind started kicking up and the temperature dropped to 40 and 41 in a few minutes. It is going to be pretty tuff fishing. The weather is suppose to turn cold with snow sunday.
  6. I do not like either I had a heat stroke in In transit thru seuz. standing on the bow of a carriers with a B A R in a 118 degree sun and heat.
  7. that is a big question it depends on the area the body of water they are in the nutrient value of the water. the available forage. to mention just a few. Yo u will have to. be specific with your question to the MDC.
  8. there is one thing wrong with those z-Man baits if they ball up the hook will OFTEN not come through the plastic because of the stretch in it. Other than that they seem OK. i have only used them in the sinko style and after I used them awhile and caught a few fish on them they changed buoyancy. I do not know what caused that but I did not care for that.
  9. i went out yesterday for not much more than a hour. i found one little patch in my area that hit 43 i sort of casted around a little with no luck then just turned to practice with my spro. I was told someone got 16 lbs In a tournament last weekend on a Rouge. They said bass were bitting in small areas. I know what that means and really it is appropriate at this time and conditions. I am just too old and do not have a thick gas wallet to be doing the milk run thing anymore.
  10. boy hes a old bugger to look at those cataracts on his eyes.
  11. I use 4 inch steel fine wire leader on mine. i make rope Lures to catch them on. I have a large school of them up my cove nota one under 31/2 ft and many are 4 ft.
  12. Chief Gar. can. become a problem. they have had a explosive population increase in LOZ. I think they as well as the practice of taking spawning bass off their beds. contributed to the down turn we had last year in fishing. i personally had a 2 ft gar try to take a 3 lb bass off my line. They are fun to catch but on line and lure. They are aggressive.
  13. You might be able to use it. I think it depends on the way you fish. trollers need something to show a lot more. but if your a structure fisherman it might still serve you.
  14. mine either
  15. warm day but the high wind was blowing right across and into all the chunk bank on the north shore. I never got out at all. I was hoping for a couple degrees jump in temperature. Just checked what is suppose to be the current temperature of the lake and it still stands at 36. Never have I seen anything like this winters effect around here, I was up in the tackle shop today chewing fat and some fella came in with fouled up ask him how he was doing. no idea where he came from on the lake but he said there was still ice in some cove in the cove he was staying at. water is a bit cloudy in this area and that does not help a warm up at all. Kind of very frustrating. Now were suppose to have a cold day wednesday and winter mix on sunday. Frustrating to say the least.
  16. Last evening when I checked it was 36 degrees on the surface. There is a pretty brisk wind out there today. I can guarantee you it it not nice on the water right now. we have winter weather coming in the middle of the week as well.
  17. I tend towards something looking natural like the original Rapala had. I think it has a lot to do with what looks good to you at the time.
  18. giggers can get out of hand. i am sure of that. but my wifes grandfather used to dyanmite onthe Meramec. thank god that praxtice is done.
  19. It would not have been any better here on LOZ. 4 out of 5 mornings I have awaken to a frozen surface on the entire lake. I am sure it extends to most areas on the lake. All it has to do is the wind stop and the temperature go down to 32 and it freeze over very fast. I have never seen anything like this here.
  20. that depends wrench it has something to do with your diet chile will create a big bubble on old folks fast
  21. I sure wish it was 45 here on LOZ. We was all ice wed, thurs and fri morning over most of the lake.
  22. I see nothing wrong with your side of it. I see a lot of perception on the other side of looking down there noses like you all are less human than they are. I do not like to see anything reinforce that thinking. I have live on both sides of the coin. Let me just say i am 100% more comfortable carrying on a conversation with hill people than some of the yuppie type that run in my daughters circle. Hill people tend to real and display their feelings. You cannot tell what you are talking to with some of these city people. Thing will say whatever is the "cool thing" rather than what they think or feel.
  23. I think from the time I hit my teens till now I have used very fast reels. My father was not much of a fisherman but he was one fine caster. At one time he belonged to the old casting club in Forrest Park in St louis. They all used lightening fast reel with very light line for that kind of casting. They floated the casting plug to the target as much as cast it. While fishing is different it is not all that different. Target caster try to use as least force as they can to deliver a casting plug. I Have learned that is very true. Some lures have a penchant to catch in the air and do things you do not want them to do. A softer cast calms that down. I often see fishermen passing the dock with the long rods and they are putting a lot more force into getting the cast out than I think they need to. That is a good way to get a early case of Tennis elbow. I do not watch much fishing TV. All the pros it appears uses a long rod however. Myself I do not think it is as much about the casting as it is landing the fish. When I see some guy landing a good sized bass and the rod has that long progress taper. I think to myself if he looses this thing he needs his a-- kicked. I will be the first to admit that a 7ft rod is a beast to use a real fast bait casting reel on. Then on the other hang the long sticks or dreams to use with a fast reel for pitching. I recently bought my first reel of the newer generation. Its a Quantum Kinetic. First thing I did was oil it turn the cast control down as far as I could and loosen the spool. It is really a smooth casting reel but it could be faster. We will see if it breaks in as the season progresses. If it does not I will alter the breaking system. I am going to use it solely for pitching I want a soft slow delivery for that.
  24. It is a good thing if you got good health. arthritis and such as that can make for some unpleasant fishing
