  1. Gear fishing at Mark Twain was a good change of pace last Sunday, but all I could think about was fly fishing.

Specifically trout. Brown trout. Current river brown trout. I've fished the park several times but never explored any further than the first hole past the wire at Montauk.

    I've never caught a brown.

After speaking with a veteran fly tier at Reeds, he suggested some streamers and that I spend the afternoon sighting for browns, then come back to fish at dusk when they're more active.  I put in at Baptist around 2pm, loaded up the kayak and headed upstream. Didn't fish.

Found 3 holes that had browns holding tight to the bank. Set up camp on a gravel bar and headed back downstream to the first hole an hour before sundown.

Saw the same nice brown tucked next to bank cover and after several passes with no interest the fish started upstream. Casted upstream ahead and gave a few strips and my #8 olive streamer got nailed. 16" fat and healthy. Ended up catching another 14" brown later that evening.

Spent the night on the gravel bar. Hooked up but lost another brown today on the way out. Caught a good number of rainbows both days as well. I'm quickly becoming hooked on the Current!

Thinking Taney 2 weekends from now.

At this rate i'm going to need to start saving for next summer steelhead fishing on the Deschutes!

  2. The water clarity was as good as I can ever recall. Just wish we could've gotten into some bigger crappie.

I noticed my hands were like sandpaper while at work Monday from all the crappie/bass we caught.

Idk when the switch occurred but I haven't drowned a minnow while crappie fishing for several years now. I just feel that if I can catch em on a minnow then I can get em on a jig. Usually white/pink. And then I spend less time rebaiting and more time catching.

  3. It seems like the chiggers and ticks are worse than they have ever been, almost every year. They spray

suburban neighborhoods nightly during the summer for mosquitoes. There seems to just be more bugs than ever in recent history, and therefore more food for spiders as well.

Bugs thrive in heat. Warmer tempretures = longer breeding seasons for bugs.

Not saying that climate change and warmer temps are to blame.

    But it would make sense.

  4. Ended up getting the Cabela's RLS+ combo 5 wt 4 pc.  Got to spend the weekend at Montauk trying it out and I did pretty well. Definitely need to upgrade from the line it came spooled with. Thinking Rio Gold or SA GPX. But I was more than impressed with the rod/reel. Caught good numbers drifting a nymp/egg dropper set up.

I do get the appeal of being able to give such a natural presentation with a fly rod. Its all about the drift.

But coming from a gear fishing background its still quite foreign to not have a feel in my hand of whats going on at the other end of the line.

Saturday I spent time fishing both spinning and the fly rod. Sunday the spinning rod never came out of the truck.

  5. Yeah we did pretty good. Didn't get on the water Saturday till 10. Did well with olive/black micro jigs, bead head nymphs, and woollies. Caught limit then headed back to my farm in Licking. Fished the trophy section on Sunday. They were hitting everything early, then egg patterns later in the day.

  6. Good to hear the dock pattern is returning to normal.  FIshed 2 weekends ago in the Gravois arm around my usual productive docks and brushpiles and could hardly manage a bite. Caught a few lmb's then ended up at Coconuts enjoying the scenery.

  7. Im sick. I've got a fever, and the only prescription is catching more trout!!!

I'm  a smallmouth guy, hence the screen name.  And in years past when I did trout fish it was just to get 4 good "eaters" from Maramec/Bennett/Montauk or stockers at Busch and I admit I've been a bait baller 98% of the time.

Well this yr I decided to put down the powerbait and start throwing/drifting flys/jigs on UL spinning set-ups and i'm now hooked!

My question is if you were going to fish for trout this weekend would one of the trout parks be better than Taneycomo due to all the generation?

Or would Taney still be better?

    Maybe below Beaver Dam?

Taney is where I would prefer to be, for obvious reasons and I have a 17 ft Rogue boat/50 Merc, a canoe, or a kayak to choose from.

But the extra flow from generation has me worried that somewhere else would be better?

TY in advance for any advice!

  8. Reminds me of going down to Weldon Springs on opening weekend. Reminds you of opening day at a trout park, except here, everyone is casting #7.5 steel shot.

Shoulder to Shoulder and <100 yrds across from you. Fighting over who shot the one bird that flew down the line. Everyone should put that on their Bucket List!

    Don't forget to wear goggles!

Been there, done that! And your description was right on! My buddies first dove ever took rounds from at least 3 other guys, and was fluttering downward already when he hit it, dropping it at his feet. Who ever shoots last wins?

Its checked off my bucket list and I wont be doing that again!

  9. Cabelas has a bunch of nice set-up's on sale right now. Cableas Prestige, Cabelas RLS, TFO Professonal series II. Kinda hard to narrow it down since I'm not familiar with any of them.

Heres a link if any one wants to make a reccomendation.

    Thanks for the replies!

BTW I'll primairly be using this rod initially for Maramec, Montauk, and Taneycomo. Pretty much handle all my smallie stream fishing with 90% bait casters/10% spinning. But I'm sure once I'm hooked on the fly I'll be looking for a 7wt as well.

Good thing I'm recently single haha!!!

  10. As far as trout go I've been a spinning set up guy and after many years of putting it off I've finally decided to take the plunge and pick up a fly rod. I'm fully aware of the addiction it can be and have been warned that I may end up selling off all my heavy bass gear by the time it's all said and done. But I'm willing to take that risk!

    Now, my dilemma.

I happen to have access to a very nice, vintage, Heddon Pal Pro Weight #8381-7' Fly rod weight 5.

Would this be a good rod to learn on? Or would I be better off getting a modern graphite say 5w 8.5' setup? Thinking new so I don't bang up the nice Heddon glass rod? Or would I be missing out on using a great vintage rod?

  11. Thanks for the replies. Thinking I'm going to try pitching/fliping, and bottom dragging with it and see how it works out. Its definitely a nice rod for sure.

Went to a funeral of all places yesterday unfortunately, and an old friend of mine was there. No one was expecting him. Drove all the way from Navada to MO with a one piece 7'10" rod in a compact toyota just to give to me. I was speechless.

Aparently quality gear pops up for cheep in the desert since theres no where to fish. He got a lot of 15 different G Loomis rods for $15 each?!?!

  12. I recently recieved an older but in unused condition G Loomis MBR941c GL2, 7'10'' MAG-MED Extra Fast 10-17 lb, 1/4-1oz rod. Its intended design is for steelhead plugs. I've yet to find any steelhead In the MO ozarks, so im thinking about using this for a bass set up.

My question is what application would this rod be suited for the best? Was thinking maybe cranking

setup with a low gear baitcaster?(would 7"10"" be too long for this?) Or maybe for a flippin/pitching setup?(lenght would be good for this but will the medium power have enough back bone?)

BTW the rod feels great in hand. Any tips or opinions would be appriciated!
