  1. Nice feesh pictures. All except for that one where the Taliban dude is holding the fish. Now we know the real truth . . . these fish were caught on a mountain stream in Afghanistan and not the North Fork.
  2. Its floatable from Lane year round. I've put in there 3 or 4 times right at the campground, and once at the 63 bridge.
  3. yeah, well, those flies I guess will kind've walk, and I've got a few that do that too, but nothing like a Sammy or a Spook will. Just not enough mass there, and they can't churn and push water. And if you made a fly that had enough mass, you wouldn't want to cast it or retrieve it with a fly rod.
  4. Tim Holschlag's "Smallmouth Fly-Fishing" is a pretty good book on methods, tactics, and flies to use. Still, I'm convinced that you're going to a lot of extra trouble to fish this way for smallmouth though. Fishinwrench is right about feathers and fur not being as effective as plastics. And show me a fly that can walk the dog, or buzz like a buzzbait. They don't exist.
  5. Beautiful fish. Good work!
  6. Thanks, Al. Shade is good! I'm up for wherever or whenever you guys decide. Mid-july I'm on vacation though.
  7. Anyone ever stayed at that Laz-Y-Days place? Are the campgrounds nice? Thinking of taking the family there next weekend.
  8. I'm gonna get one of them Curados because my old Ambassadeur has finally had it. As others have said, once you get the hang of a baitcaster, there is nothing better for throwing heavier lures more accurately. I've gotten to where I don't like using a spinning rod - seems like I have more problems with line twist than any problems with backlash on the baitcaster or even problems with flycasting.
  9. The quake woke me and my wife up here in Ballwin. I thought someone was trying to break into the house. Couldn't get back to sleep.
  10. I might be able to make it.
  11. Very nice Cicadas, Nortrad. Well done!
  12. Fishinwrench - I think you're right on the Sneaky Pete. I might just tie up a few of those with some swiss straw for wings. Marking up the wings with an orange marker and a fine point black sharpie for variegation. Lots of orange in the cicadas around here.
  13. They are THICK out here, Gavin. My back fence is covered with thousands of their shell casings. Couple days ago, the kids were out back helping me doing some yardwork, and I shook our small apple tree and a huge swarm fell from the branches and the wife and kids went running and screaming away. The noise is quite loud in mid-afternoon. You have to shout over them to be heard, and even inside in my basement you can easily hear their pulsing wail.
  14. Good report, Al. I love the Big. Might be heading there this weekend to retrieve Hoffmeyers canoe. Some yahoos he loaned it to last weekend, took it out and sunk it, escaping with their lives. Got the rough whereabouts, but I don't know if the water will be low enough.
  15. I'm experimenting right now at my tying bench. Using some black foam pipe insulation on one prototype. Another using black bucktail bunched up. Swiss straw for wings with some orange magic marker. Orange rubber legs. I got the wings down. Not crazy about the body.
  16. Sure you could do it, but it would be a lot of work. 3 1/2 miles from Rhymers up to Jam Up. Some fairly fast chutes you'd have to paddle really hard through or just get out and drag through.
  17. That is one sweet place, SB. I would jump on it. You gotta pool out there? Pool or the pond. Pool would be nice.
  18. I'm halfway through "Riverhorse" by William Least-Heat Moon, a book about his travels from New York across America in a small C-dory by way of the major rivers (Ohio, Mississippi, Missouri, among others). Very good reading and lots of historical perspectives and quotes concerning floods, the COE, levee building, and also a lot of insight into the people who live along the rivers.
  19. Well, seein as how this is all on the "honer" system, yeah, I could prolly lay off the sauce. But about the loin cloth, say I were to randomly draw some chick like Jessica Biel . . . whats to keep her pryin eyes from wantin to see whats behind my curtain? (i.e. - my wedding tackle) I can just see it now, Salem News-Crescent Headline: "American Lung Association Denies involvement with Soft-Porno Fly-fishing Tournament"
  20. Can former pro anglers enter? And since this going to be August 27th (hotter n bejesus), is it okay if I wear just a loin cloth? Paul Dallas BTW - who is Chota? Is he the offspring of Chewbacca and Yoda?
  21. Good report Cdog. Been wanting to get down there myself. Mid-Oct is probably about the time the smallmouth start going moving to their winterholes. A cold snap will put them down, and that sounds like what happened to you last fall -- but then again, warm weather can keep them biting like it was summertime all the way to mid-November. That time of year its a water temperature thing, and how cold the nights consistently stay to bring the water temps down. My 2-bit theory anyway.
  22. I'm with Brian Sloss -- not a fan of fishing competitions, but if you absolutely have to do it, consider Phil's suggestion about making it all for charity.
  23. That creek almost kilt Paul Dallas and Hoff a few years ago. We fitted my Old Town canoe with a big center floatation bag and tried to run it when it was in flood. The rapids right below the bridge took us out. A previous run at a lower level had been a lot of fun, but my white water days are behind me.
  24. Okay, Plexglove . . . . whatever. You got some advice, but I don't think its 190% spot-on , but go ahead and fight it - I DO think you got a good chance of getting it thrown out. But first take ole Pauls advice and ditch the attitude. It ain't gonna help your case. You got busted for having some fun snagging paddlefish and don't be going in to the judge and spouting all this goofy advice you got.
