    quick report

Was out Wednesday and again today. Stayed close to home, around islands. wt today hit 51 around 1pm. Both days just wanted to cast. Caught a handful of spots both days up to 15" on ned. Lost a bigger one on a perfect 10 backflip. All on bluff walls or ledge rock. all fish came in close proximity to laydowns or the middle of standing trees. Nothing on gravel or chunk banks. Beautiful today with less wind. Quite a few boats with a mix of trollers & casters. Birds about gone around bridge.
  2. If that does not work tie on the "little guy"
  3. RPS, I don't disagree about the line counters costing more. But for me, I fish alone most of the time and I need the line counter as I may have 4 rods dispensing line at the same time while I move around the boat watching each reel and tending to the trolling motor too. It would take forever to watch each reel and monitor the color changes. I do use the metered braid on my final 5th rod if used. Just sayin'.
  4. Take a look at the Okuma "Cold Water"line counter reels. Right around a C note. Paired with an Ugly Stick Striper rod and you're in business for less than $150.
  5. As this presentation becomes more mainstream, I'm sure many bait makers will offer up their "improved" version on the bait. I'm kinda a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" guy. I prefer the cut Zinker over the T.R.D. I have a friend in California who uses a 1/4 oz ned head and the larger size T.R.D. fishing in 25-35 fow. I guess you do need to adapt to where you fish.
  6. Yea. Don't leave fish to find fish. Had stripers in mind with some good reports but I haven't been out for 3 weeks and started casting. !st cast- 15 " smallie. finished the point with 2 more short smallies and a decent spot. Might be a pattern right? But with $20 worth of brooders in the bait tank off I went. Could not find bait balls, could not find active gulls, could not find stripers. 4 hrs later I could not get bit casting either. When will I learn. wt,44-47. Drop dead beautiful day!
  7. T-shirt & stripers on Super Bowl Sunday. Does it get any better? Great job! I'm going' soon!
  8. Saw a pair of otters on Beaver this fall. From the posts that followed, they seemed to be rare on Beaver too.
  9. If you frequently have a rear deck partner, Talons can be a real "in the way" issue. Talons are also more easily moved by swells/wakes because of their more vertical deployment. That said, I believe they have a deeper water capability and less install issues. I've fished on boats with both and they really do help in less than 10-12 fow. JMO
  10. Outstanding!! A Beaver Lake fishing post. Lance, you are awesome on those crappies. Thanks for the report Hoping to get out this week. I just wonder if there are any crappies less than a tank of gas from the Rt. 12 bridge. No luck for me in PC last time out. Yeah it was WINDY.
  11. Striper on your 1st trip...awesome. I went 6 months before I got my first one in the boat. Then I read some info on here and boom! And hey flatlander (yankee transplant myself) there are walleyes here too! Welcome to the circus.
  12. Sweet! A real beauty. Look forward to having ya up here.
  13. Go to a Shaw Grigsby site. He demos a braid to fluro knot. I've used it on Nano to fluro for a season with zero breaks. half uni and half improved clinch with 12 wraps. Long slim knot. Casts well. good luck.
  14. Makes trolling with the MK at .5 mph tough too. Probably wait until Thurs-Fri to venture out. My last two times out, I had the lake to myself. Only problem with winter fishing for me on Beaver is, having a slip, I usually get gas at PC or HSB. Regardless of what they say are their "winter hours" they have not been open the last 2 Tuesdays I've been out. Very frustrating but I understand with the little traffic I've seen. I'll need to use a can full just to get to a marina now, I'm on fumes. Good luck everybody!
  15. Ran out for 2 hours this morning before wind started to howl. Beaver Shores with brooders. 15# striper and an 11# hybrid (my 1st hybrid) both on a flat line with split shot. 35fow. WT still 46.
  16. Fished Coose Hollow yesterday with brooders. Tons of bait right from the mouth. No bait in less than 35 fow. Blessed with a beauty that bottomed out my Boga. 42" guessing around 31#'s. Quite a circus in the wind. Let em' go to see him next year. Happy New Year all OA folk. Thanks for teaching me about Beaver.
  17. For spinning I'd use 10# Fireline. For casting, 30# Power Pro. Flouro leaders on all. JMO
  18. That's more like Beaver Lake hrs/fish ratio. Any trip for me with over 10 fish is GREAT!
  19. Wow Ham, if my math is right that averages over 40 fish per trip. You're sure not fishing Beaver too much. LOL
  20. Very cool to catch great examples of all 3 species! Nice!
  21. Mike, nice catch! Were you guys using minnows or just jigs? Crappies on Beaver are still a mystery to me in my 3rd season here.
  22. I still have a couple old metal Jon-e hand warmers and they still work great. IMO better than the crush type. My friend has a newer metal one from Zippo and it works quite well too. They can be bought at Walmart. The older Jon-e are still pretty plentiful on ebay. They really excel at warming cold wet hands.
  23. Got out this morning at 7:30. 56 degrees and a hoodie was enough. In at 11 with whitecaps and 39 degrees. Pulled brooders across Beaver Shores points. 35 fow to 60 fow Bait balls everywhere. Rewarded with one just over 33", right at 18#'s at 8:15. After that brutal wind made boat control too hard for me to enjoy. Missed one more hook-up and headed in. Water temp 51 going out and 48 coming in. Might not get out again till after Christmas so pleased to get a nice one. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.
  24. Wind was blowing about 12-15 with about 60' of line out. I was no where near the bottom in about 50 fow.
  25. Can't make this up...true story. Last week I had just got out and had tied on a new Dixie-Jet spoon on for the first time. Forgot to adjust the bait caster and 1st cast into the wind blew up a backlash of epic size. Picked at it for a good 5 minutes while drifting in the wind and you guessed it..wham! Something clobbered it. With no way to let out line, I chased it with the Minn Kota and finally gained some line on the reel. Great fight -14# striper. Still swimmin.
