I wish that it would've ended yesterday. I passed Champ and vaulted into 1st!
1, 14, 14, 37, 42 on day 1. About as good as anyone not named Ketchup could do I guess!
I thought of him yesterday. I threw a blade quite a bit and had one really good bite, but had forgotten to put a trailer hook on there. I lost 3 of your jigs yesterday too. I need to stock up, but they were definitely biting them.
Put in at Mill Creek and were headed out just before 6:00am. Hit our first spot and found a few right away up in the brush. I was committed to trying to catch a fish on my big SPRO Rat, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The rat got absolutely crushed on my 7th or 8th cast and I boated one that went 5.3. We stayed on that bank and caught another one that was just over 4 on a chatterbait. Spent the morning bouncing from spot to spot and I had a tough time putting the rat down until it got really hot out. No other takers on it, but I'm a believer now. Every other fish that we caught was on a jig. Broke off a keeper smallie at the boat due to a bad knot, and broke off 3 jigs on hook-sets. Time for some new line on my jig rod! The key on the jib bite was to throw it up right on the bluff banks with a ledge. They would hit it right as you pulled it off of the ledge. Tried throwing a 6XD and a big worm with zero takers.
It was a great day and we had a total of 17 between the two of us with 3 over 4lbs and a total of 9 keepers. Yesterday's bag would've won any derby that I've heard about on TR for the last several weeks. Too bad there weren't any random Wednesday tourneys! We had just over 17lbs. Water temp was 91 degrees when we put it on the trailer at noon, and the wake boats were insane for a Wednesday.
I throw a Black spinnerbait with the colorado blade. My go to is the Jewel Jolt with a salt craw trailer. I like a black and blue chatterbait and I've actually slayed them on the ned in junebug a bunch.
My rod selection is extremely hodge podge. I have Fenwick, several Lew's, Abu, BPS, Berkely, Okuma, and now a Falcon. I'm sure there's an Ugly Stick or two in there too!
I think that I'll try a Hammer on the next go around. At some point I'll cheat on Lew's, but I couldn't make myself do that yet. After having that Quantum fall apart on me out of the box, I have a hard time straying from what I know.
I ended up this time around going with a Lew's Tournament SLP Speed Spool in 6:8:1, and a Falcon Bucoo 7'3" in MH. That flash sale that BPS was running today saved me $40 on the reel.
I typically try to buy stuff that's good for all around use. I've recently been buying more technique specific stuff though. I have a couple of cranking setups and one that I only use for spinnerbaits, etc...
My wife has allocated $275 to buy me a new setup for my birthday last month. I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck. I'm typically partial to Lew's everything, but am thinking about grabbing a Falcon Bucoo SR in MH and a new Shimano Curado i. My last set up that I bought myself under the radar was a Lew's TP-1 Spinnerbait rod with a Lew's Tournament Lite in 6:4:1(I think.) I'm still really thinking about another Lew's reel and love the TP-1 rods, but I know a lot of you are really happy with the Falcon rods. The new Curado is supposed to be great as well. I only own one non-Lew's reel now and it's a Pro Qualifier that I got half price. The only other time I've strayed from Lew's was to buy a Quantum and it lasted two trips before it literally fell apart and I returned it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
