  1. I wasn't going to post this here - but after Ham asked if I had let the OA community know about it I figured I probably should. Blew out my right Achilles last week and going in for surgery tomorrow. Obviously, even with insurance it's gonna be expensive so I did a GoFundMe page here:https://www.gofundme.com/help-randy-get-back-on-his-foot Thanks for the support from the folks who already know - hopefully I'll be back wading the Smallie Streams before Fall.
  2. I'm all for finesse when it's what gets them to bite but most of the time river Bass guys piddle around with tiny little panfish baits too often.
  3. I have used superlines on spinning reels since someone who shall not be named gave me 5 or 6 spools of Fireline back in the late 90's. It was and still is pretty good, but newer braids and super-super lines like NanoFil take line management to the no hassle next level on spinning reels. If I had to use mono or fluoro on spinning reels again - ugh, not gonna do it. That's the reason I use them, but the leader is more of a confidence thing - I am convinced it helps with some fish, not all. I also like a weak point somewhere down the line to pop off easier than straight superline.
  4. That's pretty funny. Nice Crappies.
  5. Nice Walleye and welcome to the best fishing forum on the entire 'Net.
  6. I would go Table Rock in that time frame, but maybe one of the Bull Shoals guys will chime in here.
  7. I use to double the end of the Nanofil using a spider hitch, then do back-to-back Uni knot. Lately I've been doing this, with a drop of super glue on the knot for good measure after the knot is done.. Make sure to wet the knot slightly before snugging down.
  8. No - but you can't get up on plane in anything big without having to power right back down or crunch.
  9. Moving the seat up helps some, but it does limit how you rigs the rods, and you have to use shorter ones so I left my seat stock so I can still use longer sticks and keep them inside and safe. You'll figure out what works for you the more you go.
  10. Delaware to Shelvin is 4 hours max, if you park on the bank for one entire hour. Don't know where you are getting 8 from. Figure floating downstream about 1 hour per mile, but I go a little faster than that.
  11. Karma will get him eventually.
  12. That's one of the only things I like about being generation younger than you Al - we already had the good stuff and knew how to use it - but we don't have the little asides like that about our first experience with it.
  13. In the old days I took one of my tubes there when I didn't want to screw with loading the two man canoe - (before I had a solo canoe) - never had a problem.
  14. "Guys, unfortunately what we have now is about as good as we're going to get for the foreseeable future. Their data is not on our side, and their bias is still toward maximizing harvest for some reason. " Sums it up in a nutshell. I wish we had the manpower ( and will) to get 18" or nothing enforced but it isn't going to happen. And here we sit.
  15. Yeah that center rod storage is great - my old Lowe had that - very handy.
  16. Never call Malarkey - after all, he would risk getting shot for a stupid Luger: Seriously though - I've caught my biggest Bass of all three species on both my slowest presentation (Suspended stick bait just sitting for a minute or more), and one of my fastest - ( burned compact spinnerbait) - so it really depends on the situation at hand. So that's clear as mud I guess.
  17. Love the write-up Al. Pretty much covered it all, I'll just add my two current favorites:Heddon Spit N Image with an added feathered rear treble - super easy to walk but the line does sometimes get tangled around the front treble when casting in the wind, and another Gunfish knock-off - the Academy "Pistol Minnow". Can walk or pop - use it 90% of the time now.
  18. Probably Hootentown to H.L. Kerr. I usually put in and portage up but that stretch has always been good fishing going either way.
  19. 10 miles with actually fishing is pushing it. I've a killer bad day or I'd post a long detailed view of access, but if the bloody maps on this site would load (COUGH, COUGH PHIL) it would show you what you need to see for the most part.
  20. "Ask" was supposed to be "take" - bloody autocomplete.
  21. You'll learn what you can take and what you can't pretty quick - I have the Pack which is more or less the same size. You will love your solo - trust me. Only thing I can add is rods sticking up like that will get broken. Ditch the big cooler and put them forward from beside your seat across the center thwart with the tips inside the front like this - much better. My seat-backer is off for this shot but you get the idea. Good report and hope to see more.
  22. Anything you get to be an "all around" rod will be a compromise. I like a softer medium action for spinnerbaits and cranks and any old 50 -60 dollar rod will work, but like Al said for jigs you need more "feel" and that's more expensive. Ultimately you need a couple of new outfits, really.
  23. James River Basin Partnership moved the river Jam back to the Finley this year - so fishing anywhere near the Creighton access at the Ozark city park will be hard to do. http://www.jamesriverbasin.com/th_event/river-jam-2016/ I would suggest somewhere else for Saturday afternoon.
  24. Yeah - it's a little lake. I did the dam climb a couple of times but there's better fishing elsewhere on the Finley to make that climb worthwhile to me.
  25. So true.
