I hear you. Such an ancient and interesting, toothy fish. I find they are fun to catch for a short while each year. The thrill factor soon drops. Then I generally ignore them, unless nothing else is hitting. Or if I see a bigger one. Or a longnose (most of the ones here are shortnose). I still want to catch a Spotted Gar and Alligator Gar on fly.
Grass Carp are fun, as are Drum and Common Carp. Really, I enjoy any fish I can catch, and I like variety. I'm not eating any, so I'm not going to poo-poo any fish that is willing to play. They are all fun. If good, wadable smallmouth streams were closer, and not flooded or crowded, I'd be fishing for them more for sure. I'm doing my best to enjoy what is nearby, most of the time. Yep... like @BilletHead says, love the one you're with.
