Not sure what you mean by crowded, 1500 or so will be here on a good free fishing weekend, better the weather more people will show. The place right beside my shop, Roaring River Resort, I thinkl will handle that many guys, call them at 417-845-3235

You can't camp on MDC land, except in designated areas, I just figured people would figure that out for themselves, if a sign says you can camp then it would be ok, to camp. I guided on crane yesterday for a bit, it was fun, of course it was a self guided trip I didn't get caught, so it was fun.

Yes on my face book page a nice 6"er

Fished crane this afternoon, caught 4 trout and a very healthy creek chubb. In 30 minutes I landed all these fish and missed a few, caught two on a egg, 1 on a Adams parachute, and 1 on a pheasant tail, all were a size #14 I can't post pics with my iPad, but I put several on my Facebook page today.

Ted & Havey fished down there today, maybe they will Put a report on tonight, I think they were going for walleye.

you are right, I buy the biggest part of my gas and grocery items in Crane, of course just living 10 miles from Crane really helps, but crane is on the way to work so I do all the buisness in crane I can, they have a decent Chinese place there now and subway is always pretty good in Crane, but some of the cafes are worth stopping at, I stop and get biscuts and gravey every once in a while at the little cafe right in the middle of town, where are the flea markets are located, and my insurance agent is in crane, great little town full of good people.

Fished Crane today with Russ Doughty, he is a hoot to fish with, everybody should fish with the elderly once in awhile just for the fun of it Russ did very well today despite having a 10' fly rod, he spent most of the time either hung up in the weeds, in the trees over head or snagged up on the bottom, I would love to be selling him flies. He did manage 4, that all totaled might have been 12" in length. I only managed 6 but I did get a lot of fun out of the day, watching Russ cast once, then retye the leader, cast again, retye again and the fun didn't stop very long, Like watching bull in a china shop. But the creek was full of trout, we saw a lot of nice fish, just didn't hook up with many, I landed most of mine on a san juan worm, I think Russ got two on the casual dress and two on an egg(glo-ball) I caught one on a dry, and one on a crawfish pattern, that Harvey Ragsdale showed me. Creek is very low and we did see a few fish on beds, but not very many. We stayed away from the spawning trout.

I had some samples late last fall, tied em up and the table rock bass loved the blue head with blue/black body, then it turned a bit colder and I switched to trout, didn't really fish them a lot this winter, but I did catch two 10+ rainbows on a silver head with a chartreuse tail, I was fishing the small head. I think they will find their place on many a fly tiers bench, and the look good to, I still use barbell eyes, but I like the size and weight of the fish skulls.

Crane fished well today, I had 6 and Russ caught 4, and Russ landed a 30" stick
-
I already had a light

Yep, I have some been tying a lot with the stuff, it is going to make head cement obsolete one of these days

You can't guide or camp on MDC land, I know that for sure, I've taken conservation employees with me to crane creek on fishing trips, and I made certain it was as friends only, they knew I knew the rules because later I had a conversation with one of the guys about just that. I had a good friend once get a ticket for camping on MDC land it wasn't marked but he got a ticket anyway, cost him 99$
-
Well I'm sure it isn't legal to guide on MDC land, but he could be guiding on private property way below town.

We have a black caddis that hatches out at R.R. most of the winter months, don't see it everyday like the tan caddis, but we see them alot, I use the #16-#20's all winter long, see them sometimes up untill april, as early as october. I use a dyed short fine deer hair for my smallest caddis patterns, much eaiser to use than elk and works better for me on the smaller patterns, only you and you alone will know it isn't elk

I've never seen a pair of felt bottomed tennis shoes, so unless you have a very special pair, I think you'll make out just fine. And the new rules only apply to trout waters not in warm water creeks, rivers or lakes.

What about the copper headed, rattle moccasins, they are thick on crane creek. -
150$ + court costs, that is what I was told by a MDC employee, but I don't know if he really knows or was just talking.
-
I've tied on a pair of dyna-kings for 30 years, never had any trouble with them( professional series)

Still like my simms with the aquastealth sole, they are great here and out west, I do have the studs in mine and they are great, don't need em much here in the ozarks, but wouldn't be without them out west.

Another great weekend at Roaring River state park, lots of eagles, lots of trout, very few fisherman, lots of eagle watchers.
I caught a lot of trout this weekend on #16 and #18 parachute adams and blue wing olives. I know a few guys were still pounding them on the white chamois flies, and the orange was doing pretty good also. Olive, purple, white, tan and black buggers did very well all weekend, as did small #14-#16 cracklebacks. Caddis and griffiths gnats did well all weekend, good caddis hatches every afternoon. San juan worms in lt roe, dk roe, and the cream and white were effective all weekend. Some of the guys are still throwing big streamers and still getting a big fish once in awhile, but the bite on big stuff seems to slowing down, the water has dropped again, even with the rain we got last week the water is still low and clear, I'm using 6x on nymphs, small buggers and streamers, 7X on all my dries and 5X and heavier on big streamers.
Nymphs will work all day long right now, #14's and smaller work better right now, pheasant tails, zebra midges, copper johns, burlaps, sow bugs, and gold ribbed hares ears will all work well. Glo-balls, in lt. roe, oregon cheese, apricot, white/red, brown, and the olive are all working well.
If you have a kid or just want to pound a few trout real quick, get a pellet fly or a doz and go up by the hatchery outlets when the MDC is feeding trout and you can have a lot of fun for an hour or so. Just two more weekends of C&R left, come down and enjoy, been a beautiful winter so far, lot of the weekends have been in the 60's this year, to good to be true, it has given us one of the best dry fly fishing winter in years.

Started out nice and finnished nice, great day to be fishing in january, 68 for a high over here, can't imagine anybody was inside today, unless you had to work I worked my 3, 3hr days this week and I was ready to fish today. Started off this morning using a small egg, caught about 7 in the Falls Hole, walked my way down the east side of the river towards the old CCC lodge, caught about 10 more on a #18 griffiths gnat, I was fishing my 0 wt bamboo so I was fishing mostly small fiies, got down by the low water bridge in front of the CCC lodge saw a big one so I thought why not give it a go, well I hooked her, a nice 11 pound trout, got her on a #18 chamois fly 1 #4 shot and 6X tippet, took me about 5 minutes to get her to the net, we took a pic or two and sent her on her way. I figured it couldn't get much better today, so I took the chamois off and put a dry on and spent a few more hrs catching trout on #20 blue wing olive parachute, pretty good day on the water, I switched back to 7X when I was fishing the dry, but it was a good day to finish out the january portion of C&R in Roaring River State park. I'll try to get a pic up of the 11 pound trout as soon as Roger sends it to me

Missouri Stream Access Law, One More Time
timsfly replied to Al Agnew's topic in General Angling Discussion
I'm going to carry a copy of this next time I'm accused of trespassing, I'll give one copy to the land owner and one to the officer that comes down to talk to me, a copy, if they read it should get me out of a jam or confuse them so they won't know what to do -
The river looks good, only up a bit, and we needed the rain.
