Add me to the Konic fan club. Presently own the 3.5 for my 8 wt and will be getting a smaller one for my 6 wt reel soon. I really like the cone drag. I set it and it stays where I put it (as opposed to my Battenkill that seems to wander at will)

I voted no. Not because I am not in favor of more enforcement (actually I am), but because I suspect our monies would somehow wind up being somebody's pet project that has little to do with hunting or fishing. Call me a cynic (cuz I am) but that is my take on the entire issue.

Another One Bites The Dust...
trout fanatic replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Angling Discussion
I used to laugh my arse off at rookies who did stupid stuff like forget to put their drain plugs in etc. Then after, I dunno 20 years experience or so I launched my boat without putting in the freakin plug. Man that karma is a b####. -
What's On Your Fishing List For Santa
trout fanatic replied to Larry Richards's topic in General Angling Discussion
I let it be known that I need a new Konic for my 6 wt. But just in case I get underwear, I got a credit card in the ready position -
Bar Height Tying Bench Bar
trout fanatic replied to Forsythian's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Okay, you guys got me thinking and that is always dangerous. While FOR ME the idea you guys are suggesting wouldn't work because I would either turn it into a bar (in which case I wouldn't get any tying done-or a tying station meaning I wouldn't get any drinking done). How about both? I think maybe a L shaped desk with the taller part being the bar and the lower the tying station. The inside of the bar would act as storage for fly tying materials. The part about the carbonated beverage was a joke but has valid concerns. Unless you are very neat, soiled tying materials are not fun. By having a seperate tying area attached to the bar you may solve this problem. Just fodder -

I would probably wind up drilling holes in the top part to put wooden dowels in to hold thread and such which would totally defeat the purpose I would think. It does seem like a good idea-I am just sure I would not use it for its dual purpose -

I eliminated that problem (single malt is not carbonated). -
Ditto what the others have said. Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. Great stuff

Phil, I opened this thread expecting a train wreck (base on the title). Great post!

Live Bait Shops Durring The Off Season
trout fanatic replied to solus_vero's topic in Pomme De Terre Lake
It has been several years since I have fished Pomme but I used to buy them at the heated docks during the off season (both docks had them-but a limited amount and sizes). Come to think of it I'm not even sure the heated docks are there anymore (man it has been a long time, I'll have to change that this year). -
If You Could Only Have One Fly Rod
trout fanatic replied to eric1978's topic in General Angling Discussion
TFO Pro X2 I have 2 of them and like them. I have also grown quite fond of a Orvis Clearwater Classic (10 ft 6 wt) this is the older model that I have really just started to break in and I like it well enough that I have decided to buy it a brand new reel (probably another Konic). Neither rod will break the bank and will perform admirably. -
What Are You Tying?
trout fanatic replied to jjtroutbum's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I am a nice uncle who has two equally nice nephews that have taken up flyfishing (but not fly tying). I have been busy cranking out foam extended body grasshoppers (no doubt many of which will be sacrificed to the tree gods) Pretty much have that out of the way now so time to start replenishing the box for next year -
I too vote for the stockingfoot. The only advantage a bootfoot has is that they go on and come off easier. The stockingfoot will give you mobility like you won't believe. And, if you get the breathable ones, all you have to do is pass gas one time to discover they really do breathe.

My Son-newest Member Of The United States Navy
trout fanatic replied to tippet7's topic in General Chat
Congratulations! Thank your son for his service. The pride you feel was evident in your post (some things ya just can't hide lol). Good luck to all of you. -
I have had great luck dealing with cory at the fly stop. Lots of cheap flies with extremely fast deliveries. Glad to see other folks use him too.

DLM: I see by your post count you are relatively new. I haven't had the pleasure yet so let me welcome you to the boards and thank you for your service. Murdoc: That is really cool and not to put any pressure on anybody or anything like that but I am with buzz, I wanna see some pics. With all of the radical crap that goes on over there wouldn't it be something if that place turned into a shangrilah for trout (don't think it will ever become one for trout fishermen, just trout)

What Is Your Idea Of A Good Fishing Show/video?
trout fanatic replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Angling Discussion
I despise the marketing pill that tv has become and watch very little of it. Tired of EVERY single fishing program turning into a bass tournament (or FLW tournament) which quickly turn into a vehicle to pimp the latest and greatest. I'd rather watch grass grow. On the other hand, I did enjoy flyfish tv. Anybody remember the fishing show on espn called (dang I can't remember lol) I think beat charlie or some such thing. I hated that program so much (I think i may have watched it a few more times than I should have just so I could see how angry I would get Looks like the internet will be the entertainment center for future programs. Television does not seem to be interested in entertaining any more. Sad day -
Yeah I pretty much due the same thing, only I am still in the experimental stage so each one is turning out a little different. Next on the agenda is to wrap some weighted wire (heavier this time) only around the end of the hook. My objective is to get it to slightly stand up (walk the dog typeathing). Pretty cool stuff I'll let you know if I have any success. Thanks

They are incredibly easy to tie. I use marabou and krystal flash for a tail. Then fold over a piece of foam that has been trimmed at an angle so when folded it resembles a minnow. Glue it with super glue (zap a gap works well too). Paint the body with glitter nail polish. Add red gills and yer done. You do need an oversized hook though so that the body of the fly clears the hook gap. I have noticed that the weighted version sits a little lower in the water (duh) and makes a little more of a disturbance when stripped. Need to experiment more.

There seems to be a growing popularity for crease flies for freshwater use, but I can't recall them being brought up on this site. So does anyone use them? I just tied up a few and tested them out today with mixed results. They are a blast to fish. I tied up two different test models, one weighted and one not. The weighted one (30 wraps of 20 guage non-lead wire) I fished first hoping it would sink a few inches under the surface but alas it wasn't able to overcome the bouyancy of the foam. So I tied up the unweighted one and on the first cast-had a strike but missed. So I cast again and had another strike but missed again (dang it). Third cast to the same spot resulted in a 8 inch largemouth. Also had a overachiever of a bluegill take a swipe at it but was unable to get his mouth around the 1/0 hook ha ha. Plan on tying some more up (seeing as I have a hundred sheets of foam laying around) but was curious if any of you also use them. Any special techniques that seem to work better than others?

I concur with all of the comments so far. I think besides McFarlane and Steffan, TFO entered the fiberglass market last year with a finesse series fiberglass rod (I suspect they were testing the waters so to speak). Reddington also offers its fiberglass line (South Fork I think is the name but I may be wrong). Besides that the market is wide open and appears to be growing as far as I can tell. Good luck and keep us informed.
