    What's Cooking?

I know the crappy picture problem. Last night the fish burgers decided to fall apart. I tried a new binder method and it sucked. Back to egg as part of the equation. I served the fish hash with salsa and a side of guacamole. I guess I can add it below to show one of my failures. Tonight I have a strip steak in the sous vide. I have curried cauliflower ready to roast. I have a salad ready to dress. Hopefully, tonight will be picture worthy.
  4. What you describe is the reason Babler talks about his friend Beck's hook set.. Beck said, as I understand it, when you feel a bite, reel quickly until you feel the fish and keep reeling, then let the hooks set themselves. Just put an arch in the rod and fight the fish.

    Our Little Town

Thank heavens, the majority survive. I am sure you will teach the be safe, be sure mantra, and I hope your young listen.
  6. The wife and I are downsizing. I have gathered my accumulated fishing stuff. We are talking three unfinished blanks, and three rods I no longer take in the boat. Three or four reels. Enough plastics to start a store. Around 15 pounds of jigheads and jigs. 9 Smithwick, Spro, and Xcalibur jerk baits. An interesting collection of top water baits that includes Mikeys, Jackall Buzzjets, Ricos, Pop R's, and old spooks. Worm leads, Carolina rig accessories, and HOOKS! It will take me several days and many baggies to create "lots'". Anyone want to come do this for me? I thought not. The reason for the post is this PSA: Do not put everything you cease using, or do not finish, over a space of twenty years in a large upstairs closet. Cull as you go guys. 😕
  7. I inherited two guns that deserve TLC and a new home. I also have a youth gun. Browning .22 LR from the 1950's, no scope (my father's squirrel gun) Ithaca 20 gauge Featherlight side by side dual trigger that dates from the late 1930's (my mothers quail gun) slight ding in the barrel that does not affect function (car wreck). Winchester 20 gauge single shot (my youth "learning" gun) I have not hunted since my teens. All of Dad's and Mom's other guns were sold in their estates. I know next to nothing about gun value and markets. I do know these would have value to someone - although the single shot won't be much. I need useful advice. Do I take them to Cabelas and take what I can get? Should I consign them to a dealer, and if so, who? Any other thoughts?
  8. Eureka Springs suffered a terrible loss Friday evening. Six boys under 17 in a small passenger car managed to leave the road at a high rate of speed. The trees stopped them. Two died and the other four are in the hospital. Two of the survivors are in ICU. All were former students of mine. We could use prayers and good vibes down here.
  9. I ordered 1/8 oz. crappie jigs from Bo. When they arrived, I nipped off the lead collar. I look forward to using them. I still have 20 or so of Dave's 1/16 jigs, but I lost the last of his 1/8th. The Hayubasa jigs work, but I do not like them as well. Besides, they are not inexpensive.

    What's Cooking?

These last few posts may be food for thought. They are hardly tasty. 😁

    Newbie

Kevin, welcome! I am an old fart that does not fish much between October and March, but the reports by those I follow indicate A rig or jerk bait for bass. Rigging minnows for crappie. Walleye on the dam riprap or way up river, even from me. Good luck.

Try the recipe guys. With the modifications I mentioned. It went in my keeper/repeat box.

    What's Cooking?

A bit of experimenting tonight. I started with this recipe: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1019681-cheesy-white-bean-tomato-bake I added onion, more garlic than called for, Italian spices, and three sliced smoked brats that I browned. Let's call it sophisticated beanie wienie. I will serve with a salad and the wife is making cookies. I hope the result is as tasty as that in my head.

    What's Cooking?

Tonight I fixed a meal that 90 percent of my students would not eat on a bet. Grilled chicken panzanella with radicchio, endive, carrots, tomatoes, Kalamata olives and blue cheese.

    What's Cooking?

Seriously bad joke gentlemen. So tonight I finally get to prepare the delayed Valentine's dinner. I have the chocolate expresso mousse made. I will serve it with semi whipped cream and fresh berries on the side. The appetizer, curried shrimp with mango basil sauce, is made and ready to assemble. The lobster tails are bagged with butter and ready to go in the sous vide. I have the asparagus chopped for the side dish, asparagus risotto, and the Parmesan grated. The chilled bubbles are ready to come out. Let the festivities begin!

    What's Cooking?

The wife was feeling poorly today. She asked me to delay the delayed Valentines. No butter poached lobster or any thing. Instead, I made her one of her comfort foods - tomato with sausage and herbs sauce over really good fusilli.
  18. Up river with the pre spawn/spawn fish shallow, try a small jig tipped with a minnow, a small jig with a junior sluggo, a roadrunner (tipped or not), and a jerk bait. As a back up, throw the flicker shad as a crank bait.
  19. I do not know about the quarry, but good spawn fishing sites include the eddy behind river turns and blockages such as islands and shoals.
  20. We are all glad you joined. We have many hardcore river and canoe types. Enjoy!
  21. Isn't that the truth. Purina trout.
  22. I endorse these messages!
  23. Many of you know this, but do you know the local Walmart has trout day sales and the high school has a school holiday called trout day?
  24. Stop at Tim's fly shop just outside the park and pay attention to what they say. And, like Ness said, eye protection, sturdy shoes, and maybe a kevlar vest would be warranted.
