Lilley's Lake Taneycomo fishing report, April 17
flyfshn replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
Great report Phil! -
Had an opportunity to do some wade fishing on Sunday morning. At approximately 8am, we fished at Pointe Royale, just to the right of the path. It was sunny, approximately 65 degrees, with a slight wind at times and no generation. My buddy said "nickel for the first fish"? I said sure! I put on a 1/100th cream/yellow jig with a float (recommended by Chuck from Anglers & Archers several years ago - its usually what I start with every time). First cast, BAM, indicator went under and fish on! It looked to be a nice fish and I had 6x tippet on, so I had to take my time. My buddy was stripping a fly that Carolyn at River Run Outfitters recommended (can't remember the name, but it looked similar to an Olive wooly). He also caught a fish and seemed pretty proud of the size, so he said "hey I am going to bring this down so you can see it", while I was just landing mine. He said its an 18" bow. I admired it and said check out this brown I caught. He measured it and it was 19", LOL. The pic below doesn't do them justice. I am a little rusty on picture taking. We released both fish successfully and made a second cast....BAM, another fish. Third cast......BAM, another fish. Fourth cast.....BAM, another fish. We fished for 2 hours and I landed 12 fish and lost 2. All of them except 2 were nice fish, over 15-16". Two browns and the rest were bows. After the first 10 fish, I had to replace my jig with another one because there wasn't much left of it, LOL. After several fish, my buddy put on the same jig and I told him to come over and fish next to me. He caught a couple, but I was definitely in the right spot. The fish were hanging out approximately 50-60' from shore. Was great to finally get out and do some wade fishing!

Just bought a Pflueger President spinning reel and a "Lilley's Landing" rod from Phil over the weekend and he put 4# line on it. Not sure what the rod is, but it is a great set up! Great action in the rod and the Plueger President is very smooth.

Rented a pontoon from Lilley's Landing from 12-5. Was pretty sunny and temps were in the 70's and all 10 flood gates were open. Was a little nervous about drifting since I don't have a ton of experience boating. Phil said, you'll be fine, just leave the motor idling and if you get close to the side, move it out to the middle. He was right, it was a breeze, so if you are concerned about drifting, don't be! All three of us used spinning reels/rods with a 1/4oz bell, one used a egg pattern from Duane and a red san juan worm, one had a #12 grey scud with a red san juan worm and the third was a #12 tan scud with a red san juan worm. Yes, all three had a red san juan worm at the bottom! That is what Phil and Duane suggested and it worked well the day before! We went up to the line, just below the dam and two of us caught rainbows on the first cast. For the most part, we would drift down to Fall Creek and then go back up to the line. Seemed to catch more closer to the dam, but caught some down from Fall Creek as well. Between the three of us, we probably caught 25-30 fish. All were rainbows and they ranged from 13" to 22" and there were a couple beautiful ones. Unfortunately we didn't take any photos. The two guys I was fishing with needed some assistance (tying on rigs) and I wanted to fish, so I said the heck with taking photos! Was a great day and as usual, Lilley's Landing looked great! Well manicured, beautiful and the folks working there were very friendly! If you haven't seen it yet, stop by Phil's "office" on the dock! It is SWEET! Wish it was my office!

Taneycomo report: Friday, May 29th, 2015: Accompanied by the trout legend, Phil Lilley, we were twice blessed with a great late morning of fishing. With a full open dam feeding the lake, and sporadic rain and thunderstorms, we opted to drift fish using weighted scud, and Duane Doty trout egg combo. The strikes were often and fun. We each, in an hours time, caught 3- 7 rainbows. The heavy rain had caused a mud-slide, just 1/4 mile from the dam, down to Fall Creek. Even so, the hits on red San Juan worms and egg pattern produced hits and landed the trout. Great day, and thanks to Phil, another fun Taneycomo adventure.

Date: May 26 Time: 7:45am Weather condition: cloudy/fog Location: Pointe Royale access Generation: none Had an opportunity to wade for a bit this morning. Walked down the hill and there were quite a few fishermen already fishing. Met Stan and Chuck, two great guys that live in Pointe Royale. I walked strait out from the access since there were guys fishing further up stream. Had my 4wt rod with 7x tippet and tied on a cream/tan micro jig with an indicator. First cast I caught a 13 inch bow. From there on, it was a fish on approximately every 3rd cast. All 14 fish caught were between 12" to 16". One nice bow broke my tippet where I had a previous knot in the line, so I tied on another cream/tan micro jig. The picture attached was what was left of the fly! Was great to fish Taney again! You guys that live close are very lucky!!

Thanks for the replies. My son and i bought a couple 8's from Cabellas when they had them on sale, mainly due to the price and not sure how often we would use them. We haven't used them yet and i read something on the internet that a 10' makes a huge difference, so we were trying to decide if we should take the 8's back and save up for something bigger.

Is there a huge difference between a 8' and 10' kayak, besides storage?

Scott, glad to hear you are doing well. I had a heart attack and triple bypass in August 2010 at the age of 43 also! Never thought it would happen to me. Mine was due to stress and chewing tobacco, which I now encourage others to quit. Try taking some fish oil, one tablet in the morning and one at night. It really helps lower cholesterol. Take care and hope to see you on the water or in the woods!
