No reports...must be some fish catching going on? Is the game already on up the White? I'm itching to get out and this will be my first shot at walleye this year. Finally found the right motor for my boat and once I get it the way I want, I'm going to do as much fishing as I can as far as I can go up the White. Thankfully we got a little bump in the water level, but probably not enough to get me as far up as I want to go.

What's the story on that rod? It looks like at St. Croix SCV blank with a cork tennessee style grip. Custom build?

Chalk this up to, I'll pass. I guess I get the ice fishing thing if you made poor enough life choices to be in a part of the world where this is the only game in town November through March. That's a whole freaking new ballgame when it comes to needing decent gear. I guess if I lived up there, I'd enjoy sitting on the ice or in a shack with my best buddies as much as anyone, but darn. If I live my entire life (and I will) without needing to go ice fishing out of necessity to catch someone, I'll die a happy man.

Something else to look at would be weigh (sp?) protein. I don't know what the shelf life on that stuff is, but I imagine vaccum sealed weigh isolate is probably good indefinitely. I love the stuff and it makes me drink water. 1oz = about 25g of pure, easily digestable protein. Doesn't get much better than that , and it's awesome for staving off general canoe fatigue.

Nice Trophy. For a second I thought you had posted this. Does this make you happy JoeD? <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hN2gMP3Q2Z4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Edit - heck, JoeD started a whole thread to heckle video makers and I can't even get one to embed. I'll try the link. I promise it's worthwhile if you like asian carp getting dispatched samurai-style. http://youtu.be/hN2gMP3Q2Z4

This is just about the darn dumbest most contrarian BS I've seen on this forum. I want to talk about fishing reports. You guys all think you're going to be a guest writer for F&S or what? If I see another ffishing report that follows this formula, I'm going to puke: 1. You woke up and some crazy chain of events let you go when you didn't think you'd be able to otherwise; 2. The weather was ______________; 3. The water temperature/conditions were______________; 4. You started fishing the __________, but switched to a ________ and really started catching them; 5. You had boat issues/got home without incident. You know, we all like to fish. Most all of us like music. I can't speak for the rest of you, but there's something about a sunrise over a quiet road - knowing I'm headed out to do what I love when most folks are still in bed - that just puts me in the right mood. It should come as no surprise that a lot of us appreciate the same thing. Sure, the road on the way there and the sunrise are common elements in a lot of fishing videos. But hell, as far as I'm concerned they set the mood. I got news for you. There ain't much original in fishing. It's all been done. You may think you have the secret technique, secret location, secret whatever, but it has either been done or outdone many times before you. We simply enjoy what we do, and there are common elements to what each of us do no matter how original or different from the pack we think we are. I love the fishing videos guys. The things JoeD gripes about, well I think they make these into a genre. Maybe hearing Mad Season or Panic on the way to the fishin hole doesn't do it for some of these guys, but it does for me. Saw a good one by LittleRed not long ago, and I don't know who all make the rest but I like yours too. Keep doing what you're doing. You are archiving, sharing, and it's art. I don't care how original or unoriginal it is, I love watching them and I love showing them off.

The old WW mentality is like a lot of things in fishing. Fishermen by their nature are explorers who want to get away from the crowd, or at least they like to think so. It's like the whole "I listened to X band before they were cool" kind of thing. I'm definitely guilty of it myself. I have some pet lures that you just can't buy. One of my old favorites was the 4" salty sensation. They stopped making sensations in that smaller size and those were our favorite river smallmouth baits for a long time. But the coolest part about it was no one else could get them. Just about every one of us has a rod, reel, or lures that you can't buy anymore. So that mentality competes for brain space with that part of most fishermen that can't stand to be without the "it" lure. If other folks are going crazy about it and paying rediculous money, there must be something to it. There are countless lures that have caused market frenzies. The chatterbait, A-rig, and WW come to mind.

Man the retireees on the Little Red really piss me off sometimes. I have been on the little red since I was an infant. I was 2y/o and asleep in the bottom of the boat when my step dad caught his pb rainbow out there, a 9lb pig of a fish that's on his wall at home. His family has owned land on it since he was a kid...maybe before the water was cold. It's one of the coolest lots out there - downstream from lobo a mile or two where a little creek comes into the river. It has grown up into a big nice mega bucks home subdivision, but we're the ones with the trailer building a cabin. I fished cow shoals at night before the made it illegal and many folks thought about the ethics of yanking big browns at night in November, but as soon as I was old enough to put on rubber waders we did it. So I come by the place as honestly as anyone. Anymore, we prefer to float it in canoes with little 3h motors for the long deep pools. A year or two ago my little brother and I were floating to cow shoals. As usual, it was elbow to elbow and some guys were fishing some really skinny water right where we had to come through. I called out ahead to them and asked them where they wanted us to go. Nine times out of ten, most folks will say go right ahead and not let it bother them. These guys looked up at me and didn't say a word. So I beached the canoe right above them and was going to CARRY it around them. We were pretty much at our takeout and I'm a nice guy like that. Our aluminum canoe hit the rocks probably 30 feet above them with the typical aluminum-gravel sound, and one of the guys said to the other in a voice you could tell he wanted me to hear...."they should outlaw those darn things this time of year." Well, I let that get the better of me, so I pushed right back into the current and went over their run beating the paddle on the canoe every time I switched sides. You encounter that sense of entitlement to a river in lots of places. I fly fish just as much as the next guy and I hate to lump folks into categories, but it's generally the simms waders chest pack 10 spools of tippet on a lanyard guys I hear it from the most. Again, I have nice stuff and I don't mean to offend anyone else that does, but that retiree-I just bought everything out of the Orvis cataloug BS really pisses me off. Nice fish Marcus. Richie is a cool spot and takes some work to fish.

Man that's great stuff. Nicely done.

Jerry, you just lost all credibility to the extent you had any. Posting in another man's forum to direct folks to a "competing" product is about as low as it gets. I build rods that, in my opinion, knock the socks off of anything off the rack yet you don't see me douching up other folks' threads talking about how my rods are better. I've known Trophy for years and know that he does A1 first class work on baits and you don't see me pimping his wares when other folks are trying to sell lures. You say your manners went out the window to try and shrug this off, but that doesn't excuse anything...particularly when you didn't say you were sorry or edit your low life comment. You're pretty low. As to Trophy's baits, I can tell you that he ain't doing them for a living and none of these were painted with the intent to sell them. He may not talk himself up enough but I sure as heck will. He is a craftsman and a darn good one. All of these baits were made with the intent of keeping them or selling them to friends for about cost. You won't find anyone as dedicated to making sure they "run right," and he culls as many as he fixes with pliars if not more. Any bait he's willing to give to another person - you can rest assured that it's been on the end of his rod. But I've said enough. The folks who know what's up have probably snatched up all that are for sale and I guarantee they'd all buy more next year.

I have some time to myself right now. After three years with a phenomenal law firm in Rogers, I made an agonizing decision to leave the firm and will start my new job on January 2nd. I'm going to fish below the park at roaring river tomorrow, and I need to know what license I need. I've done the roaring river thing once before, but it was this summer so I just had to have the simple park pass thing. But C&R season isn't open tomorrow, so I have to fish below the park boundaries. In Arkansas, that would mean license and trout stamp. Is it the same for MO? Is there a single-day trout permit I can get (non-resident)? I may just spring for the annual deal. Are MO licenses on a "fiscal year" (365 days from date of purchase) or are they on some kind of calendar year? Hopefully someone can chime in tonight. Also, if anyone has any tips about the area below the park they would like to share, or if anyone wants to tag along with me, please let me know. Looks like I'll be accessing near that cemetary, or somewhere along the road before it gets to the cemetary. I'll check this before I hit the sack and again in the morning before I head out.

My mom and stepfather are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary in 2013. She wants all three of her kids and their significant others to go with her to Wyoming/Idaho/Utah for a week this summer to float, fish, hike, and stay in a cabin. My sister just finished her PhD in biochemistry at Colorado State (had to brag) and she and her husband do a lot of floating and trout fishing out there, so if they dictate the terms of the trip I'm okay with that. My little brother travels the world rock climbing, so I don't want him to have much of a say in it or I'll be miles from water. I, obviously, want to do as much trout fishing as possible. Preferably hike-in small stream big fish stuff like I used to do in Creede Colorado. I know snow melt can blow out rivers in the early summer, but I don't know how that varies from state to state. I'd like to go somewhere that's off the beaten path a little and has a good number of options for stream and river fishing. Drive to trail head hike into the river kind of stuff where I can get my girlfriend on some real western trout fly fishing. Anyone have much experience out there? I don't really know where to start researching other than to just google stuff, but if anyone could provide me with some decent starting points I'm all ears. The perfect solution would be somewhere where my brother could climb, somewhere with a bigger river where we could take a raft either for white water, fishing, or both, and somewhere with lots of small stream options where my girlfriend and I could cover a bunch of water over the course of four or five days. The other benefits would be maybe a ski village type environment not too far away where we could have some good dining options and my mom could stay entertained...but let's focus on the fishing here. I can make the other stuff work.

I'm looking for some waders as a birthday present for my girlfriend. I think I've settled on the Redington Willow River, which are in the $150 price range (about what I was looking to spend minus boots). I'm sure I can't really go wrong with Redingtons (and I'm not getting her Simms for her first waders), but I was looking for reviews online. Found this one which I thought was hysterical. I'd post the link but it would probably make your computer sick, so I'll just copy and paste the review. Lots of gems here: When I first picked up this Redington Willow River Wader - Women's, I honestly wasn't confident if it would live up to the shows that were announced. But incredible, I was honestly delighted. The testimonials for this unit from around internet were good, and also promptly you could inform it was on the list of good-selling products in its type. The only unfavorable opinions I have come across regarding this unit were from people complaining that they had bought the wrong product. Just after using it for just several times I am able to seriously express that it is one of the most effective merchandise I've ever used. It actually was simple to arrange, arrived together with very clear instructions, with a rebate and return policy in case that anything went wrong. Obviously nothing has currently, and I also don't expect it to. It really is much higher quality rather than almost every other unit I have ever used. I phoned client service once I bought the item. It did not due to I had a matter, yet usually due to I normally desire to evaluate the buyer support in case that I've a important concern in the future down the road. The person that responded was polite and also knowledgeable. I have already been using this goods for just about a week and i'm in love with it. I try to use it and to show my buddies about the item at any time I am able to. One of my buddies even hurried out to purchase it just after I presented her how it operated at my home! It makes me want to know why numerous merchandise never provide like this. Will it be mainly because those suppliers are simply passionate with decreasing expenses? Will they really not care for the item anymore? However I am delighted the seller came through so remarkably for this purchase. I have written a nice comment for the vendor and would highly recommend them in the future.

I've been twice in the past month or so. Once was three or four weekends ago when we still had some higher water from the big rain in early October. We hammered them that day. The wind was really blowing and it was tough to get in position, but I caught a bunch of nice fish on bottom stuff, a few on frogs, and some good ones on crank baits. I went again weekend before last and had zero wind but low water that was crystal clear. It was TOUGH. Saw lots of mongo fish but caught maybe seven or eight between my girlfriend and I, plus one magnum crappie. Don't think we're going to get another major influx of water unless it's a cold rain, so my fast fall fishing may be done.

I was speaking to someone the other day who mentioned talking to an AGFC officer that lamented the condition of the Kings. According to him, the drought and hot weather this summer really put a hurt on it. He said it would be a decade before it came back to what it once was. I don't know how much stock to put in this. I know it got bad low for a good portion of the summer, but I didn't go up and see it myself. Did the fish population take a hit this year?

I'm in the market for a lake lot...possibly a house. But I'd really like to build a cabin on the lake at some point. I'd like it to be not much farther from downtown rogers than Rocky Branch. I have an uncle with 5 acres and a dock somewhere near Rambo creek. I don't know much about lake property. I have a good bead on the dock market and have a line on a couple of private dock options. Here are the "musts" - must be lake front OR a short walk/golf cart ride from property line to corps easement - must be "dockable". I don't know if there are some areas where you can put docks and some you can't, but I get the feeling that's the case. I have dealt with a number of private dock issues in my practice so I understand they aren't doing new permits, but I can get a dock. I don't want a membership in a community dock. I want MY dock. - must be buildable which by implication includes access to sewer or something that would qualify for septic. They call this perk testing, right? Also would need electric or be close enough to run it and get a good deal on a great property. - must be about 20 minutes from downtown Rogers. I suppose this is the most flexible criterion, but I'd like to be able to at least entertain the idea of living there some day, and while I love the idea of living in the middle of nowhere, I love my girlfriend more and her family is between Centerton and Gravette and her office is in Bentonville. I'd like to have a few acres and I've watched the listings I could find. I haven't seen anything that really fits the bill yet but maybe something will come up. I really don't want to be in a "neighborhood." I'd like to have the illusion of solitude even if I have neighbors. I have some clients with spots up on the north side of the lake, but that seems to far for me. I really like the Rocky Branch area and how close it is to the Hobbs arms of the lake that are so pretty and undeveloped. I'd like to be on the clearer part of the lake so I don't really want anything south of Monte Ne. I'm dreaming at this point, but if the right spot came up I'd pull the trigger.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, but the answer is yes you can do exactly that if you have no warranty that would give you a real fix. To remove a guide, put a razor to the guide foot and cut up towards the eye so that you do not cut against the blank. You can cut as hard on theguide foot as you want to. Once that is done, you can install a new tip.

We used to call them Grizz - like a proper name. I saw one in the tank at Cabellas the other day. I didn't know we had any up this way. Used to catch them all the time farther south. One of my favorite places on earth to fish is the White River Refuge, like the oxbows around Maddox Bay. Take a map or gps, beach the boat, bushwack to an oxbow and grab someone's boat that's tied up. Have had some awesome times catching crappie and bass in those cypress knee oxbows. The grinnel get packed into some of them pretty good and will hang near shallow cover like bass. They hit a spinnerbait hard. Every time I think I've got a lunker on for about two seconds, then everyone knows it's Grizz!

So can I carry my gun in here or not? Just not in this thread? Now I'm confused. Here's the EASY solution. If you feel compelled to douche up an otherwise innocuous thread with a political de-rail, then you should get punished. If you want to start a topic involving an obviously political issue, then knock yourself out. If you are offended by discussions of politics or don't think they belong in a fishing forum, then don't read them. No reason why Phil should feel compelled to define the "rules" when it comes to politics. If it's a political thread, ship it on over to that sub-forum. If it's a political thread involving fishing, then it stays here until in Phil's absolute discretion and wisdom it should be moved. End of story. Rock on everybody. As for my two cents, I have always felt that the elections that mattered the most were those that were for the smallest offices. My alderman/county judge affects my day to day life far more than the president. Oddly enough, the actual impact an election has on one's life is inversely proportional to the level of office. Who the president is affects my life the least. Neither of these guys have ever made the outdoors a part of their platform and that's perfectly alright. I'm glad to see Obama owns up to the fact that it's not his thing, but he respects those who do it. I'm glad to see Romney wants to rely on the opinions of those smarter than him. Thanks to the thread starter as I thought the article was pretty informative and in a convenient format.

That was awesome. It's strange how those giant reds miss the fly by a long way a lot of times, even when it's not moving very fast. That would be a blast.

I Need To Purchase A Nice Set Of Waders And Have No Clue
hoglaw replied to E Green's topic in General Angling Discussion
Don't get the neoprene or what I call duck-waders. Bad deal. You sound like you walk a long way from A to B to fish. Stocking foot waders with separate boots are an absolute must, though the others are right that they offer little to no snake protection. But there's a good deal of placebo effect with them on....you feel safer. I have hiked a LONG way in one piece duck-waders, both to hunt and fish. They are absolutely miserable I promise you - just like Al said - unless you're standing still between cypress knees in January wating for a duck to hit you in the face. Get the stocking foot waders. Maybe you can get some separate snake chaps to wear with them...or shin guards or something if you're that concerned about snakes. But stocking foot is a must. You can get really nice wading boots to pair with them, or you can do what I did last trip and go to salvation army and pick up a $4 pair of size 13 lebrons and be the coolest looking guy on the river. But I can't say enough that these guys know what they're talking about. Stocking foot waders are where it's at. -
Alabama is going to brutalize Arkansas. I'm dispondent at this point. A lot of very good programs have had an outlier upset loss at the beginning of the season, but we are not a good program. It is abundantly clear to me that Bobby Petrino's teams overperformed. The day to day coaching and in-game schemes combined with a few rediculously talented athletes produced more wins than we should have had last year, and I'm okay with that. But this coaching staff is completely out to lunch. Even with our starting QB out, we spotted ourselves a 21 point lead. Knile Davis could start at running back for any team in the country. Dennis Johnson was playing lights out last night. Yet, when Tyler went down and we came out in the second half with a THREE TOUCHDOWN LEAD, Paul Petrino saw fit to place the weight of the game on the shoulders of a red shirt freshman rather than pound away with two blue chip running backs. I have no idea what possessed John L and Paul P to do that. It makes no sense whatsoever. Missouri played a hell of a game. I watched it this morning and I think they played beyond their ability like Arkansas did last year. They just got beat by a much better team. As much as it pains me to say it, Arkansas got beat by a better team last night too. ULM didn't do anything crazy. They didn't have any freak plays go their way. They beat our QB to death and our defense could not stop them. ULM is freaking better than Arkansas right now, and that's a problem. Alabama is going to absolutely destroy us.

Thanks FF, never heard of stormkloth. Is that a retail space in Bentonville or just an office?
