  1. That's good advice Al. My father used to tell me that the best time,to go fishing, was whenever you had the chance.
  2. Sounds like you had a great time in addition to catching fish. Thanks for posting.
  3. You did good Matt. Wish you could have hooked up with that huge rainbow.
  4. I read your post early this morning before work, and I have laughed about it most of the day. I have never seen a talking fish, but I have had several send me home talking to myself.
  5. If mdc thinks that each and every angler can keep a daily set limit of a species of fish, and up to the possession limit, they surely are confident that the fish are self substaining and plenty to go around. I don't think that you can prove or disprove that keeping a daily limit can adversly affect a species of fish. According to mdc regs it does not. I think limits are determined by the fishes ability to reproduce. Look at the hundreds of thousands of crappie that are creeled on an annual basis. These surveys help in the process of establishing new regs on an annual basis. Mdc does say that every one can keep a daily limit without putting the fishery in jeopardy.
  6. Oneshot drives 2 miles and keeps fish, you guys drive 200 miles and turn them loose. Sounds like a break even to me.
  7. True to his nature, Bob kept no secrets. Good to hear from you again.
  8. You are right, it does work "better" than the original story about the fly. I can't recall his name as of yet, but he owned the first fly shop on the left as you were headed to the park. Right before you get to Ed and Kays place. He was about the only fly shop that carried the ice dub in pearl. One day I bought every package that he had. Immediately he wanted to know what I was tying with that new material. Bob Gaston, that was his name. You know Bob, if you tell him something, every one that walks in his door is going to know. If he thinks that you don't know, he will call you. Bob is a great guy, but no secrets in his vocabulary. Anyway, back to the story. I told him it made the best "carp fly" i had ever used, to avoid telling him that I was using it on trout. It's funny to me every time I hear this story. I never did tell Bob anything different. Coincidently, it is a good carp fly that I have caught several on. You do not have to put the red head on this one. You need to bait up your dock like I was talking about. It is easy to get them used to coming in. They smell that food in the current and here they come. I have to chuckle every time I hear a story about the "IceDub Grub". Thanks FW.
  9. Hey Justin. I haven't done it in years but some of the oaf guys out st. louis still do. I used two methods. One was to find cruising fish near the shoreline and cast ahead of them. In about may, at loz, they curise the shorelines in search of food. The best fly for intercepting them, for me was a white grub with a red head, tied on a #10 9671. I would cast six feet ahead and let it settle to the bottom. As the carp approached, I would barely move it, just enough for him to notice. Much like you would fish for a cruising brown or rainbow. The other method was to bait an area in deeper water, with dog food being by far the best attractor. 8 to 10 feet is a good depth. If you bait an area several times over the course of the day, the fish will be there. If fish are there and active, continue to add a handfull of bait on occasion as you fish. If you do the baiting on a regular basis, the fish will be there. You will attract carp, buffalo, and catfish. I have caught several carp and buffalo in the 10 to 22 pound range. You may have just sparked my interest enough to try it again. It's a rush, make sure you equipment is up to it. They will almost always try to spool you on the first run. Good luck and let us know if you do it.
  10. I gotta ask Matt. In your dad's avitar it lists as interests, "fishing with my son". So how come he left you at home?
  11. I'm glad you bring this up. I think they are hybridizing with our native possum and ruining their habitat.
  12. I think that I heard that Zack Matthews was on his way to the dam for an interview. Great fish Bman.
  13. Seems like I recall brian or justin saying 1964 on the rainbows.
  14. From the looks of the shoreline, I would say it's the Gravios River.
  15. I've got TF1985 at a big "0" on responses to his original question.
  16. It has always been my assumption that a person's behavior on the creek, is a direct link to his attitude and behavior to everyday life. They would most likely be the back stabbing co worker, the grouchy neighbor, the guy who passes the whole string of traffic instead of waiting for his turn, and the guy who use's foul language in front of women and little kids, including his own. I first saw this type of behavior, on the trout creeks, back in the early 80's. They are quickly and surely passing it on to their own children and the next generation of trout anglers.
  17. Is there anything about throwing rocks at bright lights?
  18. That's a nice jesture but a bit of overkill. No one that fishes all the time expects you to give up your spot or to disturb the fish you have located, just to change flies. Every time you wade in and out of a spot, you have to let "your" fish settle for a short time. I will turn my back to the water I am fishing and look down as I change flies. That is all that is required. Phil is referring to an ever increasing crowd of rude night time anglers. I know you have seen them as well. It will take time for them to learn the tricks of the trade and to be courteous and become a good night fisherman. The popularity of night fishing has increased ten fold since the mid 90's. I have watched you fish enough to know that you do it right and are respectfull of the anglers around you. Good luck to all on their night time venture.
  19. What's all this got to do with changing the regs in the white zones? Time to move on guys.
  20. Don't you guys read the forum from years past? Every year about this time someone starts swearing that a certain lake is turning over. If it's in the lower 48, it's probably not. Surface water temp has to reach 39.2 degrees. You guys always try to rush it by 3 months every year.
  21. Well, since you asked, Kdan and I caught 30 keepers Sat. afternoon in less than 2 hours. Most were 10 to 10.5 inches and the perfect, fry em up crisp size. We were fishing the big niangua arm of loz in 8 to 20 foot of water over brush. The depth did not seem as important as the brush. A fish fry is in order for sunday afternoon.
  22. Not trying to start any arguments, but is there scientific proof that spots are taking over smallmouth habit? By taking over I mean are they driving out the smallmouth,as some would suggest, and herding them towards undesirable trout waters. I do not know if this is fact or just concerns and speculation from our stream anglers.
  23. We should always have it so tuff, hey Justin?
  24. Thanks for reminding everyone Phil, it is annoying to other anglers. To those who use the "light on" technique, have your buddy shine his light into your face while you are attempting to concentrate on where your fly is located in the stream. In the "olden days", a well placed rock, and some curse words, were a nightly occurrence. Night anglers really take offense to lights on the water for other than safety reasons. By all means, use your light for safe travel, but try not to disturb others in the process. Two seconds of light on the water will send most big fish on the run. See for yourselves, find a big fish in your light and attempt to count to three before he takes off.
