Smallmouth and streams
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Phil Lilley's topic in General Bass Fishing Discussions
Crooked Creek use to fish very well... I used to fish it with the dubbing guy from Wapsi, Eric. Great water. Every bend we hiked he told me of these secret trails. Exciting catching smallies like that one after another. -
Beaver Lake has to be lowered to reduce flooding chances and that means we will be running lots of water here as well. The lakes in Arkansas flooded bad - and these actions are to prevent it from happening - reduce 10ft of Beaver Lakes total head depth. Taneycomo should be running anyways to supply power to the 10 states below from 100 degree temperatures this Summer. High water is a real blast to fish - it will be a crystal clear flooded monster everyday for a while... the key is to learn how now. Full flows means finding new spots to fish. New spots with bigger fish.

Fly fishing Taneycomo Rod Recommendations
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
I am thrilled to see the response. Especially of trying new things. Expanding. Growing in fishing - experimenting. When the water is running up at the dam - you cut down deep to the fish - thru the current. Big flies and big water means big line control situations. Big rod. Long rod. The old 'scud-N-bobber' is getting a new look up there too. There is a world of new fish to hook - everyday. -
Not brand - but size and weight. I strongly suggest you own a 2wt, 4wt, 6wt and 8 weight fly rods. Hear me out. You need the 2 weight for midging in low water.. You need the 4 weight for... when the horn blows. You need the 6 weight for... when the horn blows. You need the 8 weight for... when the horn blows. ____________________________________________________ I am not taking high end rods.. or medium end rods.. I am fishing a lot of fiberglass and older junky graphite and "others". You make do with what you got. The fish don't know what your rod says on it or what its made from. Right ? If you hate that idea... then try a 3-5-7 and 9 weight fly rods... though I think a nine is sometimes too light... Certain situations call for different rods. Be prepared, better than a boy scout. Tell the skunk to take a hike that day, you're covered.

I love fly fishing with the water off...
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Phil Lilley's topic in Upper Lake Taneycomo
The midge fishing in low water is so good here... almost catching fish on every drift... Excellent video Phil. If my sound was working I could hear you say where... perhaps below Lookout. Your point of larger fish in the upper end is well received too... every day I see numerous fish over 20 inches. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ This long stretch of wadeable water is at the boat ramp - where crossing is not advised - unless you know the river well. because it is a long walk around the top of the dam... Below the water is off - the river is backed up / backing up. As the water settles out - the fishing improves due to flow. -
Directly below Bull Shoals Dam
Brian K. Shaffer replied to Brian K. Shaffer's topic in Upper Bull Shoals
On that trip I did visit Jeremy's new shop, 'twas during the setup a few months ago. Bull was screaming and I was attending the Southern Rodmakers Gathering. Stayed 3 days at Cranor's which was really nice. Definitely headed down again soon. -

You can see the bent tree at right in the photo here below at night- The water is up higher in the picture above... but you can keep that bent tree in your perspective. Also, a glimpse of what the river bottom looks like. You can see the high water mark in the trees below : -
Would anyone be up for a fun get together ? Day - From 10am to 2p -.those participating will be allowed to fish above the boat ramp only. Night - From 8pm to 12am - those participating will be allowed to fish above the boat ramp only. The only fly rod you can use what we all are using - an 8ft 5wt 2pc yellow Eagle Claw.

It is snowing and I sure would like to fish in it. Let's check the Taney level. Oh wait. The app is not working now. Unfortunate. Is this information I just found accurate ? I do not know. Most would not know. You have to live on the river now to know exactly what the water is doing in the upper end. Very frustrating. I tell ya - What was accurate was the phone number - 99.9 percent of the time. 06JAN2022 0300 915.27 702.63 0 20 0 20 06JAN2022 0400 915.27 702.63 0 20 0 20 06JAN2022 0500 915.27 702.63 0 20 0 20 06JAN2022 0600 915.26 703.71 0 20 0 20 06JAN2022 0700 915.23 707.67 6 436 0 436 06JAN2022 0800 915.25 708.61 103 7108 0 7108 06JAN2022 0900 ---- ---- ---- ---- 0 0
