  1. Here is a link from a local paper. Seems like the dad was x USAF. http://www.semissourian.com/story/1931414.html
  2. It is so simple to toss a small survival kit in your back pocket, jacket, or day pack. A space blanket, some foil to make a cup, matches and tinder, a small led light, a compass can all be kept in an altoids size tin. I made up several years back and put them in my packs and vests. I added a few bandaids, butterfly bandaids, needle and thread, a few aspirins, cold medicine, and wetwipes. I personally carry a nice led flashlight, 2 knives, and a multitool on me at all times. And a pistol with few extra rounds, great for signaling. And the weather thing really gets me. I was planning a hiking/camping trip for that weekend also. When I first saw the extended forecast, I saw the temps and thought it would be a great weekend. By Wed., the NWS had already updated and predicted the rain and temperature drop, so we cancelled our plans. The National Weather Service forecasts at weather.gov are pretty accurate, just type in a zip code and see what to expect. He should have been more prepared for that also.
  3. I read this in disbelief. It was the first I had ever heard about it. I had not seen it on any major news networks. Deforestation has led to the decline and possible extinction of a rather common species that has been around for thousands of years. 80 percent decline over the past few years. What will happen next? http://www.livescience.com/26233-bikini-wax-lice.html
  4. It was a pretty hard thunderstorm with lots of fog rolling in before. Parts ot the area received 6-8 inches of rain overnight resulting in alot of flash flooding. Then the temps dropped from 65 to 35 pretty quick. Who knows, Dad may have gotten zapped by lightening, hurt himself? They are going to perform an autoposy. The area around Black is pretty rugged country, but they were on a well marked Ozark Trail that he had been on before according to the news.
  5. I have seen muddy rivers for the first time since back in the early spring. Dad is trapped in at the farm, a huge tree is across our bridge. Waiting for the water to go down so we can cut it off. Now we need several more over the next few months to bring the water table back in line. Then a nice normal year in 2013.
  6. Find a camper rental and pull one down. That would be the type of experience you are looking for on the Current from the way it sounds. I doubt if you are going to find lodging that is going to have a campfire that is reasonable. But a rental camper, or a friend that has one, in a campground with electric and other facilities seem to fit what you are describing. Look into that.
  7. I just bought a 4pc, 4wt 8' Access rod and love it. I am told it uses the Helios technology with less exotic window dressing. I love it so far, light and responsive. I have only fished it a couple of times this fall.
  8. So it only seems to reason that we need to offer some security in our schools to protect our kids.
  9. I think they are all based on a Mauser Style action of WW1, so they are all military developed weapons. The Remington 700 series bolt actions have all been used in the military The Ruger 10-22 is a military clone rifle. The Mini 14 by Ruger is a clone of the 30 carbine used in Korea. The ever popular 30-06 and .308 cartridges were made popular by the military and became popular in civilian use because of a surplus of ammo after the wars. The same goes with .223 in the AR's. The Savage Pump Shotgun and the Winchester 1897 and Model 12 were military shotguns. The famous Winchester lever action rifles were used by the military in years past. So have many single action revolvers. The Colt 1911 pistol and many double action revolvers have been used in the military. Truth be known, if we are to assume the current knee jerk response to banning firearms used by the military, it would be hard to find one that does not have a connection. That is what makes the bad so sad, ban a firearm just because the military has used it?
  10. No Chief, it is you that fails to offer a solution. You make every attempt to confuse the offer of concession on some matters. But you have not offered anything to solve the problem. What is your perfect solution. How would you stop it? What do you want to do? Enlighten us with your all knowing troll wisdom.
  11. AR's have a purpose. They are a firearm protected by the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. The original militia possessed the same firearms as the military. The colonists did too. What is different today? Why can't citizens carry the same firearms as the military? AR's and Beretta M9's.
  12. Sure it is, the government is limiting my selection of currently available guns that are out on the marketplace. The first time around, the Benelli Shotgun you purchased recently was demonized. It was a dreaded semi-auto that went bang with every trigger pull. It has a synthetic stock like the AR. And it was capable of holding more than the allowed number of sporting rounds used in hunting birds during the season, which back then was 3. Conservation order for the snow geese was the first to allow more than 3 for hunting since the market hunter days. And as far as steel goes, we have not grown accustomed, we have learned to deal with the cripples or buy better alternatives to steel shot.
  13. Soft hackles can be fished dead drift or with some kind of swimming motion. You can let them drift with the current to resemble a drowned neutral or sinking bug, depending on how it is weighted and the current. Or you can strip, lift, or drag it across a current.
  14. I am truly lost with you lately, I really can not figure out where you are going. You sit in attack mode waiting to pounce, but you never contribute anything positive. I do remember a time where it was illegal to give an Indian alcohol or firearms.
  15. Lives were really not changed by the assault rifle ban the first time. Columbine shooting came and went, they just reloaded more often, I don't recall what guns they used, I don't think it was an AR. So did Jonesboro.shooting, I think he used a lever action rifle. And he was out of jail before the gun ban was lifted. CT still had most of the strict gun laws in place from the first assault rifle ban, it did not stop it. Back in the 90's, thing were different. AR's and other military style weapons available in semi auto version were collected by a select few and made by only a few companies. Forward to 2012. The AR has changed. It is available in multiple calibers and styles. It hardly resembles the M16 used in the Vietnam war. Most major gun manufacturers carry several models for hunting and shooting sports. Several competitive shooting competitions have evolved using the AR platform as either a primary weapon or one of 3 in the competition. They are accurate weapons used in varmit hunting, deer hunting, hog hunting, and in 22 versions small game. They are very modular and fun to own. They have more accessories available than any other firearm out there to customize them. It has become a key element in all gun enthusiast's areas. That is why there is a big outrage when someone tries to limit them
  16. There were no new laws created for DWI other than lowering the BAC to .08. But the Federal and Local Governments have spent more money on the problem by running special weeks to do sobriety checkpoints. They advertise that they are going to enforce the laws more, which is a good deterrent. And they have made the punishment greater. So the amount of persons killed by DWI drivers has decreased. They did not outlaw booze. They did not limit you as to how much you can own or drink in a given amount of time. They did not close bars. They did not infringe on your personal right to indulge in a frosty cold beverage. They simply enforced the laws existing and made punishments stricter.
  17. A metal detector would be a simple purchase, just a little drop in the bucket of a school systems bloated budget. Maybe just take a percentage of the union dues to ensure the security of the teachers. As a PTA member I could see a collection for one. You really need some way of securing a school to prevent it from happening in a school again. As far as a photo id, when someone buys a gun in the state of MO, they present a photo id to verify that they are the one purchasing the gun. That is already there. I doubt there would be any way to track an individuals surroundings to control gun purchases. I might get flagged because my neighbor down the street is a meth head and has stole guns in the past, so we are not selling you one?? Mental health. There are numerous ways in place that are tracking them at the present, they just need to be tied into the current background check system. Tracking the key drugs prescribed to the individuals and flagging them in the current background check system would be an idea. Requiring doctors to report cases to the FBI so they can get entered into the system promptly. I have always felt that training and education are essential to gun owners, some are just plainly misinformed. As are most non gun owners. I feel everyone should be made aware of correct firearm safety and handling. Why not go back to the shooting programs of yesteryear. 4-H, Boy Scouts, etc used to teach proper handling of firearms. There may have even been shooting programs in schools back then. Now days, most youth are exposed to guns as something they use in a video game to create mass destruction firstly. There is no other training unless the parents are gun owners and choose to teach them. According to FBI statistics, violent crime has went down over the past few years in areas that have adopted CCW and in areas that encourage private gun ownership.
  18. Is that all you get for your vote, one favor???
  19. Or, maybe they could find the Mountain Lions that do not exist in MO....
  20. Notice that any of my ideas required any stricter gun control. They don't. Stricter gun laws will do absolutely nothing to solve the problem.
  21. Using the existing system for the call in back ground checks, there is nothing wrong with that. The problem lies in the time it takes for the system to get updated with mental issues. Criminal reports get to them pretty quick. Mental issues take longer or don't get reported at all and they can get issued . Maybe even go a step further, if you have severe mental issues, surrender your firearms until you have finished treatment. Mental issues would get noted in the database just like crimes, dwi, domestic dispute, restraining orders, and other issues that would stop a dealer from selling a gun to a person. The background check is the only thing licensed dealers have to check buyers with. There are questions on the form when you purchase a gun that refer to mental illness and drug use, but a buyer can simply lie on the application and a dealer can't really dispute it unless he is visibly drunk or on drugs.
  22. Yep. Poachers don't usually have collars on their dogs.
  23. Probably. I heard a rumor they are gonna mark Morel Sites with something Thermonuclear. That way they can track them from space at NASA.
