  1. On a sad note, the Stl.Post this Sunday a.m. had an obitutary for the fellow in question.Tony passed away Thursday at the age of 68.
  2. Al, that would be the story and wife Susie just read it for the first time-got a big laugh from a story that is at least 40 years old.Toofer is a nickname for older brother that evolved from our father's days as a baseball player. They called him Tief and oldest brother little Tief but eventually resulted in Tief and Toof.He hold's the world record for badminton racket toss on the annual July 4th celebation several years ago.
  3. The one where he could sneak up you guy's but instead ended up sneaking up on some other unsuspecting guys.Don't remember all the details anymore but that sounds like older brother;Yogi used to say he was so competitive he would challenge you to a leaf raking contest and show up in your yard to prove he could rake more leaves.
  4. Tim, our thoughts and prayer for your father and family.
  5. Don't ever recall you looking stupid in any of your endeavors.I enjoy your ability to tell a story almost as much as your art work.Found an old article years ago on the caboose from the old RiverHills Traveler and read it even though I knew the story and had heard older brother's version on several occasions.Still made me laugh.,
  6. Hey Al,any chance you might recreate that scene in any upcoming art work;probably would be an instant best seller on this website.
  7. I too have known TS a long time and heard about the 2 fish in late Sept. from a fishing buddy who also does taxidermy work. He questioned the story as he saw the fish and said they appeared to be partially frozen and his fish tale had some major " if's" in it.Like 10-pointer, I fish the park quite a bit and haven't seen a lot of big fish at any of the parks this year.Susie and I went Sunday afernoon on the Rose Holland Derby and this is when we heard the story. We talked to people in the Lodge, the Supertindent and even the new Park Ranger and they all were pretty much in disbelief on how this whole deal went done.On a different note there are a lot of browns in the campground area in the 14-18" range that are showing off their fall spawning colors. Trees are showing enough color to make it a good fall trip.
  8. Nice fish only now you'll be spoiled and spend endless time and money chasing more and bigger fish. That's a lot of fun too! congratulations.
  9. wife Susie and I have fished 3 of the 4 trout parks and Rockbridge in the last 2 weeks while on vacation. We started at Roaring the first of the month and all the reports on this website about water conditions were dead on.Hardly enough water to get a good drift nymph fishing and the fish were running small.Back home after a few days and then fished the upper Current and caught some nice fish, then caught a lot of fish in the fly zone this last Monday.Went to BSSP late Monday to fish the park on Tuesday; caught a lot of small fish, say several good browns in zone 2 and lost a brown in the 5-6# range in the Rock Hole.We enjoyed the day but it hasn't been near the quality we had come to expect. Drove to Rockbridge Monday night for a day and one-half C&R.Talked to legendary BSSP fisherman Jack B. Monday and discussed the state of fishing at he park and he said it was his worst year in a long time but thought Rockbridge was too expensive.I told him to check the prices of a guide trip out West and compare;sure the fish are wild and the scenery may be cooler but if your looking to catch strong fish close to home without the crowd of Taney or the parks it's not a bad alternative;plus it's easier for my Susie to fish.
  10. RICK,enjoyed the wonderful story of the one that didn't get away.Maybe your future lies in broadcasting as you handled the interview quiet well.Your insight into sight fishing techniques should be required listening for the beginner to advanced fly fisherman.Aren't you glad you didn't go to Wis. that fall.
  11. Chief, the mainline between Bismarck and Ste.Gen is only used as you said in emergencies when the Mississippi floods the BN north of Ste.Gen The local out of Bismarck goes to the old Flat River glass and to Orica at Bonne Terre twice a week then to Desoto 3 days a week. You hang a left at Derby Jct.to go to Bonne Terre. The North end has parts of the old M&I between Crystal City and Riverside ;the local out of Ste.Gen works Shapiro and Jones Chemical.Al Agnew has a couple of brother-in-laws who retired out of Ste.Gen and know a lot more of the history of the old M&I as they primarily worked either Ste.Gen,Bonne Terre or other locales within their seniority districts.I like you spent a winter in Ks.and worked out of St.Louis,Poplar Bluff and Bismarck.
  12. Thought from prevois posts you were a retired railroader;I started a Bismarck in 1977 and plan on going out on 2013 if the Sen.from Wisconsin stays away from our retirement.First wife's uncle was an old M&I conductor from the mi 40's until a bad ticker retired him early.I don't need any rail, just post that it wouldn't take a very big piece of rail to make a pretty good anchor.Where'd you work out of?
  13. Car shops at Desoto on the Uprr had some that I'd hate to venture a guess the weight;been a Conductor for the last 35years and hope to retire next summer. Most of what I see on the UP main on the Chester and Desoto subs run the 136.Used to find date nails in the top section of the ties=some from the late 1920's;some were still in ties;Desoto had done a lot of yard work-might be some smaller rail still around there.
  14. mainline rail weighs 133-136# for every 3feet of rail;some of the older branch lines and old industry tracks would be lighter.
  15. Enjoyed it also;some of the great MDC employees at Montauk that I remember from yars ago.thanks Chief
  16. Susie and I hunted a favorite spot Sunday and found about 60 morels. She pan fried them in butter, fixed some side dishes and I throwed some steaks on the grill and had the kids over for some good eating.Wife would as soon hunt mushrooms and flyfish as go shopping!
  17. Sure do lke the idea of the 18" one fish limit like they had at bssp several years ago.Have fished Montauk over 40 years and it took me a while to figure out how the brown trout inhabit the park. The lad(s) in question keeping all the brown trout is a 3rd generation snagger or lifter so his roots go back as long or longer than mine do.I look at browns to rainbows as smallmouth to largemouth bass;in most areas you have a lot more rainbows and largemouth than you do browns and smallmouth.I catch several brown trout each year that are considered trophies but haven't kept one in years.Saw 3 browns in one stream last year in Missouri that one I would psssibly considered keeping but only got 1 drift on him in the early morning hours and he vanished.I had his little sister on for about a minute before we parted.I was impressed enough from that one encounter that I called a friend on this forum Laker67 to come and give these fish a shot;he came but I had to leave and didn't catch the big fish either. How big-the one I lost we estimated in the 13# range, the biggest fish in the 17-18# range and the baby in the 8-9# range. We both had driven a long way and I would have turned the middle one loose and I doubt Laker would have kept any of them. That is the allure of trophy fish browns for some smallmouth and for others anything that tugs on their line.
  18. Found a handful of the litle gray mushrooms about a 100 yards from the house;wife first thought they were raisins sitting in the fridge.
  19. Retired; look's like the fish and the rest of the work force on the forum are in trouble.kudos to you Rick.
  20. Our local shoe repair shop quoted me a $65 replacement for changing out the felt to a Vibram streamtred sole.He later said he was currently out of that sole and wasn't sure when the next shipment would arrive.I watched the MDC video and wondered how effective that would be and if some would try to do it as frugally as possible and figure we did what the MDC recommended.Had bought some Simms g-4's on closeout last Xmas and used them the last year so Santa got the misses and me some rubber soled wading boots.Lucky we have good jobs but have spent most of the last month on and off at various hospitals with youngest daughter having complications with twins that are trying to make an early arrival.keep her and the boys in your prayers and have a safe holiday season.
  21. Have been around baseball all my life as my dad was a big league and minor league player and coach for 40 years. He never begrudged modern day players making so much when he never made much all of those years. He figured rock and movie stars make the same kind of money plus it helped his pension.Players now days can sign one huge multi-year contract and never work again. I had mixed emotions about this deal;10 years is too long for a player who may or may not be 31 but if the GM and front office didn't make some attempt they might have been run out of town also.Let's sign Hanley Ramirez to play short if he wants out of Florida and use a little of what's left over to sign another outfielder
  22. Would 2nd the comments from Laker 67;always good to get out on a great Missouri November day with an excellent sportsman and friend;Saw a couple old friends from the old Lead Belt area too!bring your a-game when fishing with LAKER.
  23. Last year fishing the outlets and waded down from #1 to #2 outlet;about 4 people fishing #2 so I walked out of the water onto the bank to go towards brown alley. The 2 anglers on the upstream side saw me approaching and immediately moved enough apart to suggest not enough room for a third angler. My wife was following me down stream and when these lads saw her they moved further apart and invited her to fish with them. Those of you who know Susie know she doesn't need any help but the ensuing show rivaled some of the more heated exchanges spoken of earlier. The 2 started out offering her an indicator(which she rarely uses),then some flies(she may have 4-500) in her vest and finally help if she caught anything.I watched as she out caught these 2 fellows about 5-1 over the next 20 minutes until they walked out of the stream and into the parking lot shaking their heads.
  24. hey Jason h2o is starting to settle down in Racine.may try to go sometime the week of 10/17 when we get youngest daughter married off

  25. wonder what the final count was at the Derby.one of my friends fished Saturday until about 4pm and said only 6 lunkers caught.Talked to a guy shopping waders at BassPro and he said his dad had big rainbow on,lost and the fish was immediately surrounded by some of the local boys. They pretty much reeled up,stuck a jig in the defenseless fishes mouth and "caught" it.Some of these lads are in the 3rd generation of fishing. It's a shame because one of the aforementioned gentleman can actually fish a jig as well as anyone on the stream.Talked one of the group into releasing a snagged fish years ago and he broke his line got a rod from a son and threw a perfect cast right into the fishes mouth. Now it is hard to say much because the jig is inside the fishes mouth.
