I gotta get this off my chest. I guess here is as good a place as any Spent almost 3 hours this weekend watching 'No One Saw a Thing'. Anybody see this or remember the story of Ken Rex McElroy -- the town bully and general a-hole of Skidmore, MO who was killed in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses but no one was ever prosecuted? I think it's a fascinating story, so when I heard a new documentary was coming out I recorded all six parts. Watched it late into the night Friday and finished it up Saturday morning. Man, talk about stretching 1 hour worth of information into 3 hours. They looped in three other stories that were not related too -- a man murdering his wife, a missing kid, and the horrific story of the woman whose unborn baby was cut from her gut (remember that one?). All sad stories, but they spent a ton of time speculating that these things are related; that there was some kind of curse on the town, that the town economy collapsed due to these things, etc. Speculation, hyperbole and fluff. Repetitive reenactment scenes. Interviews with local nut cases that didn't know squat. Blech. And the worst part? That I was a big enough sucker that I watched it all the way though. Thanks for listening.

Lasagne last night. It was powerful good!
  3. Enough about pounds and inches and records and all that stuff! I want to turn this conversation onto the *man* on the other end for a second. I thought the brief but detailed write up was great. Lots of detail in the setup, location and technique. And the humility expressed was, in my opinion, a great example for all of us. I also think the other folks involved in this deserve a lot of recognition. I'll admit I don't follow records much but, between this fish and Frank, it seems to me there is a new mentality taking root in which it's much less about the person and more about the fish. The extraordinary efforts being taken to safely return these monsters to the water is really commendable. Sounds like there are processes and equipment in place to improve the odds that they live. That's true sportsmanship. I hope it spreads.

    What's Cooking?

NuWay, Maid Rite, Tavern or just loose-meat sandwiches. Ground beef seasoned with beef base and cooked in a couple cups of water until dry. Slider buns, ketchup, mustard, pickle and grilled onions. Doctored up baked beans, Cherokee Purple over cottage cheese and a red beer.

    Great Books

Been on a mystery kick the last few months. Googled best mysteries of all time and got a few ideas. Currently reading Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None'. Interestingly, the original 1930's title was '10 Little (N-Words)', which was cleaned up to '10 Little Indians' later, then further cleaned up to the current title. One that came up on some lists was 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. Had heard of the movie, but didn't know of the book. Watched that the other night. It was exhausting and required lots of pauses to discuss what the heck was going on. Took a reading of the plot in Wikipedia the next day to tie up the last few loose ends. Phew! That sounds pretty interesting. Fascinating time in history.
  8. I didn't go dove hunting. Wifey's old house had a pool and she loved it when the kids were young. Everybody loves the family with the pool (but it ain't true love ) . She got awfully tired of the effort and cost of maintenance after they were gone. It's was a money pit -- but it's somebody else's worry now. I always wanted to put my float tube in there just for the photo op, but didn't get it done before she sold it. I pay $600 a year for a neighborhood pool, common area maintenance, recycling and trash pickup. Don't know the breakdown and don't really care. I've been to the pool once in 19 years, but my babies used it when they were around. Like I said, I didn't go dove hunting.
  9. The whole ad thing is weird. Haven't seen the women's clothes ad in several days now. Looking at wifey's phone last night and the exact ad SIO3 posted showed up. Today I've got men's clothing at the top, estate planning in the middle and camera equipment at the bottom.
  10. Good call, dad.
  11. We’ve started seeing more quail pheasant hunting the last several years. But this would be in CRP or grassy areas.
  12. I’m kinda glad to know I’m not the only one that gets those ads. Never had the guts to ask. I’ve never clicked, but I have paused. 😄

    What's Cooking?

Bolognese looks great. We had frozen the remainder of the Bolognese we made a month or so ago and just had it the other night. Dang. This has got to be the only fishing forum on the planet that gets this many Bolognese mentions

  16. Boy, I hear you on that. Here’s my two locking onto a rabbit. Invisible Fence right there at the wall. Every critter in the neighborhood knows the dogs can’t get in there. 😄

We went to the one here in KC a few years back. I learned I don't want to eat much more than popcorn or candy in the dark. Can't imagine trying to do loaded fries!

We've got a theater near us that did a total makeover a couple years ago. Part of a regional theater chain based in MO called B&B Theaters. They have really figured out how to extract money from my wallet. Large reclining seats with very wide aisles. Huge screens and great sound. Bar and grill on site. Ticket sales and seat selection done online, so you get your spot. Really makes going to the movies a better experience. Just a ticket is about what you pay anywhere, but it's a $40-50 dollar deal by the time we're done with it

  23. Yeah, that one gets used at the office a bit too. We encounter a lot of overly wordy s#%t at times. Not used as much as it used to be though — my Python soul brother retired a couple years ago. He’s not dead yet.

    What's Cooking?

Last weekend Kathy said she thought shrimp tacos sounded good, and I agreed. So, I set out to make that happen tonight. Had a good idea how I wanted to go about it: slightly spicy shrimp, mango salsa, flour tortillas and some kind of spiced up mayo. Did a marinade of canola oil, chipotle powder, ancho chile powder, garlic powder and salt. Mango salsa was diced mango, minced red onion, minced jalapeño and lime juice. The mango wasn’t ripe/sweet enough, the lime juice overpowered things (1/2 lime) and the red onion was too sharp, so I set about tuning it up. Added a very ripe peach that was peeled and diced. Some white sugar to counteract the tartness of the lime and a little salt to round it all out. Made a quick sauce of mayo, Louisiana hot sauce and some chipotle pepper. Got the cast iron grill pretty hot and got some grill marks on the flour tortillas. Did the shrimp and pulled it all togedda. Pretty tasty if I do say so myself. Kathy said, ‘You need to write this one down’ 😄
