    What's Cooking?

Son’s birthday yesterday; my baby girl, his older sister, A/K/A ness 2.1, mentioned Beer and Beef Stew when she was over last week. So that’s what I made for the get-together. However, ness 2.1 was a no show. I have docked her inheritance accordingly. But ness 2.3 enjoyed this. Browned beef, then sautéed onions and celery. Some flour to thicken. Followed up with diced maters, mater paste, beef broth, Guinness, lots of thyme, lots of rosemary, and a couple bay leaves. Simmered until the beef was tender then added carrots and taters. Finished with the addition of the controversial pea. It was delicious. And, you guys know I’d tell you if it wasn’t, right? Then I reminded him tomorrow is Columbus Day—the day ness traditionally springs an unannounced fishing trip on everybody—and ushered him out the door. They never remember!😄.

    Calls!

Yeah, I’d leave the calling on this hunt to the guys that know how to do it. But, if they give the green light then have at it. No harm in learning and practicing, but you don’t want to be the guy that turns the ducks away.
  3. Well, Kathy tried to sign in to confirm her entry, but apparently someone forgot her password. Consider this post a proxy. She definitely wants in. Just ask me.
  4. Says who?
  5. ness ness’ lady Thanks from both of us. I’ll let her know she’s entered. 😄
  6. What the heck—if the entry price is to type ness, then ness😄And, thanks. Now over to Marty's thread to see what I gotta do to get in on that.
  7. Alright, here's another from the e-mail archives. Two Texas farmers, Jim and Bob, are sitting at their favorite bar. Jim turns to Bob and says, "You know, I'm tired of going through life without an education. Tomorrow I think I'll go to the community college, and sign up for some classes." Bob thinks it's a good idea, and the two leave. The next day, Jim goes down to the college and meets the Dean of Admissions, who signs him up for the four basic classes: Math, English, History, and Logic. "Logic?" Jim says. "What's that?" The Dean says, "I'll give you an example. Do you own a weed whacker?" "Yeah." "Then logically speaking, because you own a weed whacker, I think that you would have a yard." "That's true, I do have a yard." "I'm not done," the dean says. "Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house." "Yes, I do have a house." "And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family." "Yes, I have a family." "I'm not done yet. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife. And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual." "I am a heterosexual. That's amazing! You were able to find out all of that because I have a weed whacker!" Excited to take the class now, Jim shakes the Dean's hand and leaves to go meet Bob at the bar. He tells Bob about his classes, how he is signed up for Math, English, History, and Logic. "Logic?" Bob says, "What's that?" Jim says, "I'll give you an example. Do you have a weed whacker?" "No." "Fag." (There's probably a more politically-correct way to end that these days, but I think most OAFs are pretty thick-skinned.)
  8. I'll try this again. Not sure what went wrong.

    What's Cooking?

Didn’t cook tonight—had a visitor from the east in town and we met up for dinner. Always good to see @Mitch f! Whoops, how did that get in there? At Johnny’s BBQ, as seen on triple-D.
  10. A good friend and long-time colleague is retiring in a few weeks, and it has a lot of us old-timers scouring our e-mail archives looking for good stuff. Of course, most of it's inside jokes, but I thought this gem was worth sharing here:

    What's Cooking?

Tasty, yet healthy. Baked orange roughy filet with blacken seasoning and zucchini and onion sautéed with lemon pepper.

    What's Cooking?

I have a confession to make...
  14. BSC is a sweet little creek and worthwhile to fish. It's a challenging environment. I'd fish it more if it was closer.
  15. Don’t mind JoeD. He gets a little belligerent in the wee hours.

    What's Cooking?

An old family favorite tonight. Brown some ground beef then add in a little this, a little that, some water, milk and elbow macaroni. Simmer about 12 minutes and you’ve got an easy, one pot, hearty meal.

    Whatchya Drinking?

Alright, results are in. The hand’s down favorite was Spaten from Germany. Very malty, full bodied and light on the hop. All the American ones were thinner with hop ranging from light to heavy. Sam Adams took second easily. Free State, Boulevard and Mother’s were all very good. None were bad.

    What's Cooking?

I’ve had a hankering for beef stroganoff and Kathy delivered tonight. Good stuff. I love to catch her arranging things for the pic. She doesn’t love it as much. 😄

    What's Cooking?

A little late on the photo, but this was my mom’s beef stew which is delicious and about as easy and it gets. Search this thread for the recipe 😄 ness 2.1 and her boyfriend visited and helped me eat the other half.

See original post for exciting new additions!
  21. Wow, 3rd grade? Way to go, sista! C'mon man, that's so 1960's. When I screw up now I get sent to the 'Focus Room'. If that doesn't work, then I get a BIP (Behavior Improvement Plan).
  22. First of all, ness isn’t capitalized. Second, the possessive of a proper noun ending in “s” is to add an apostrophe. I know this because I researched this point decades ago when an old girlsfriend’s mother sent Christmas and birthday cards from ‘the Crewses.’

    What's Cooking?

Beautiful weekend in KC. Anyhoo, Kathy blows in with some great looking filet mignons, a couple sweet potatoes, a loaf of bread, a bagged salad, and three bottles of locally made pop. All I had to do was fire up the grill and char some meat. Well—not all tenderloins are created equal. They can be dry or gritty, especially if they’re over cooked. But, these were excellent. I cut mine in half, thinking I was going to save half for tomorrow, before I thought to take a picture. So, excuse the poor photo. These Brittanys have learned to expect a few scraps when I grill. I have learned it’s best to keep them outside while we eat after grilling 😀

    Whatchya Drinking?

So, I did a pick-a-six with all Oktoberfest/Marzen beers — one of my favorite styles. Gonna do a taste test and find a favorite. Late entrants: Entrants are (l. to r.) Free State (Lawrence, KS), Goose Island (Chicago), Schlafly (StL), Mother’s (Springfield), Bell’s (MI) and Sam Adams. Edit: Late entrants are Sierra Nevada, Spaten (Germany, back where it all began) and Boulevard (KC). Free State is rated very high, I think #2 for style, on Ratebeer.com. I know Sam Adams is very good. I won’t report each time I drink one, but will post a summary. Read it if you care. Prost!
