    What's Cooking?

I talked to a buddy of mine in KC yesterday who said his third-year asparagus patch is going crazy. I'm still looking at one lonely stalk. Gonna give a quick look-see to an easy-to-get-to morel spot in the next couple days.

    What's Cooking?

Chief -- that pastrami looks fantastic! Meagre portions of pork tenderloin (done on the grill, ness rub) and spaghetti squash with a jarred diablo tomato sauce. On my desktop monitor, this bigger than life size.

    What's Cooking?

    Portion control, baby.
  4. I've been growing asparagus since 2011. Earliest I've gotten a shoot was around the first of April. Got my first one showing yesterday.

    What's Cooking?

Couple boneless chicken thighs, sweet potato and zucchini done on the grill. One thigh had BilletHead Dust from Hell. When I opened up the jar it got me to sneezing. I was scared to overdo it so hit it pretty lightly. Good flavor, not too hot. Hit the sweet potatoes with a drizzle of real maple syrup. Pretty good!

    What's Cooking?

Heck yes! Almost like a stew. I'd eat that!! I've done something like that with leftovers.

    What's Cooking?

Last night I ate out -- to meet my daughter's boyfriend's parents. Went to Stroud's, which is the second best place in KC to get fried chicken. The first best being my house Determined to stick with the diet, I had a bowl of soup and a salad.... And a little serving of mashed taters and gravy. And a chicken tender. With some gravy on it. And a bite of a cinnamon roll. And another small serving of taters and gravy. And the chicken tender was as big as a hot dog bun.
  15. Wow, I just 'liked' a Smalliebigs post! Who'd of thunk?? Al: I'm gonna turn this over to the prayer team at church on Sunday. You get that many Lutherans on your side and good things are bound to happen
  16. Same here. My yard greened up quickly after the rain and the dirt paths my dogs have worn don't seem so barren today. I may have to do a clean up mow this weekend.
  17. Sorry to hear this news, Al. First prayer has already been said. Best of luck to Mary and you.

    What's Cooking?

No, no. Corn on the TOP
  19. Noticed yesterday my red maple and pear trees are popping. Got an inch and a half of rain yesterday with more expected tomorrow. Don't know when I'll find mushrooms, but this stuff has to happen first.

    What's Cooking?

Fried chicken is probably my second favorite food. Pan gravy, a byproduct of the aforementioned, on mashed potatoes with corn is probably # 1. Together my favorite meal.

    What's Cooking?

Last night I needed something quick, and I've been cutting back on the calories lately. I thawed out some frozen, deveined shrimp and removed the shells. Dried them off real good, then tossed them in a tiny little bit of oil with some spices (onion and garlic powder, cayenne pepper, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme). Then put them on a screaming hot cast iron grill for just a bit to get a little char and heat them up. Had them with grilled zucchini and a little orzo.

Here's the bunnies. Can't tell how many are in there. At least two. They're gonna get evicted this weekend, humanely.
  24. I'll finish mine up (or just go buy some ), this weekend and mail Monday.

    2016 Garden Thread

I'd love to see some pics of the covered beds, cold frames, etc. My cold frame needs a little work before it's ready this year. I generally only use it to harden things off though. I'm an April 15 average last frost date, but we all know how averages work, right? I looked through my notes of the last few years: we got a frost on April 30, 2011, a freeze on April 22, 2013, a 34* on May 6, 2013, and record lows of 34* and 35* the week of April 18, 2014. But, you early birds have got me thinking about covering up the beds and getting things going earlier now I do the hoops and plastic thing. We got down to 24* last night. I checked on the bunnies and they were wiggling around in their little hole covered up by a new layer of leaves and fur.
