i didn't appreciate it enough when I was a kid. A lot of those guys were dads and uncles and grandpas.
A couple years ago I saw an older couple eating lunch, and the man had on one of those military caps that said Omaha Beach. I sat down next to them and started to chat. Sure enough, he had been there on the day. He was an engineer that used a Bangalore torpedo to blow out the barbed wire. He was in all the way to the end in Germany. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him, and I don't think he minded. I would have loved to spent the afternoon talking with them. Heroes in our midst, and there are fewer and fewer of them each day.
