  7. No sand bagging here. Getting tried of snipping yellow leaves off the bottoms of some plants though. Not all of them are doing this but a few. Besides the fungus or whatever being in the soil I blame part of this on the wet Spring. I even have one new tub that has brand new soil mix from wally world that has never had contact with my existing soil doing this. It has some bonnie brand Arkansas travelers in that tub. I did notice this is prevalent with this plant in other places in the garden. I did water yesterday as some plants were really saggy and dry. Then early this morning about three AM the storm hit and watered them again. I have two gages out and we had over two inches in them. I swear this morning when I went outside I could hear the soybeans south of me sucking the rain up. It came at a good time we were very dry. After lettuce was out reworked a bed and put in two straight neck squash and two burp less cucumbers. Some shots of what is growing in BilletHeadVille, BilletHead
  8. I know Ronnie what you are saying. My garden is not true organic. The only other thing I use is some seven dust on the tomatoes a couple times each summer for the giant tomato worms. The big tomatoes are easy to wash but the berries ? I bet we would all be scared at what is commercially put on our store bought foods. I cringe at the thought. The stuff imported from countries that have very little rules or none at all. This is one reason I eat wild all I can and do my grocery shopping in the woods and fields. More control what I put in my body. Even this being said the animals I consume eat on the farmers crops throughout BilletHeadVille. BilletHead
  9. Just how long will a tomato plant live and produce fruit? This is way cool I thought. The young Doctor the Mrs. works with wanted some tomato plants last year, yes I said last year. She bought a couple big pots and I bought her some potting soil and tomato cages. These are two of the plants I started from seed in February of 2016. A red and yellow cherry. She has a sun room and I got the pots planted in there early. She took pretty good care of them but watered them daily with miracle grow. When I checked on them they had already grown out of hand. I got them outside and had to invert another tomato cage on top of the first one so I could attach it with zip ties. Then had to drill holes on the upper lop of the pots and mage guy wires to keep the thing from falling over. Told her to lay off the miracle grow. She then told Pat they were getting much taller. Sure enough I had to put up those giant long plastic covered hollow metal stakes and secure them to the house gutter! The plants grew and produced well. When last summer she was off and vacation the neighbor girl was supposed to water the plants, mow and be able to swim in the pool for payment. Well on a very hot day I dropped by for a swim while Doc was gone. The plants looked like crap and were dried up. I watered and thought they were beyond repair. Well they bounced back. At the end of summer and fall hit Doc said she trimmed them up and put the plants back on in the sun room. I thought a waste of time. Then she told Pat they were again blooming and putting on fruit. So get this she had tomatoes all winter? Now to this spring. She found her a man and got married. Terry her husband took them outside and they began to thrive again. So we come to today. A storm came through town and a giant tree went down in their yard. I went by to see what Terry was up against. More than he and I could handle. He was trimming branches but had called a tree service. He then wanted to show me the raised beds he had made and planted. To the back yard we went and there were last years two tomato plants. Low and behold with tomatoes. I picked and ate one. Terry then told me there was a whole bowl of cherry tomatoes in the house on the table . Still amazed on what I see everyday of my life, BilletHead
  10. Beetle emergence is beginning to get out of hand! Been picking them off the crepe myrtle and feeding them to fish in the garden pond. Fish go crazy when I throw in a handful.. Besides the myrtle they are swarming on the wisteria.. So I bought some seven spray and gave the plants a quick spray. Then it began to rain beetles! So happy to see them crash and burn . Of course there were innocent bystander insects in the dying. Here is some of the carnage, I did read where I can spray my blackberries. You use twice the mix and can harvest after seven days. The crop is still a long ways out for the harvest. I know you wash the berries before consuming? After seven days does the spray become inert? Last year we got berries but the beetles really did a job on the plants. All the dead beetles were gone this morning. I am sure the armadillos found them. I am like MoPanfisher I hate these beetles and armadillos. I hope they choke and die eating the dead bugs or die from consuming the seven , BilletHead
  11. Seth just about every three days for me. Also depends on the soil mix I have in each container of bed. We here in BilletHeadVille are not very scientific and some tub's/ beds have some good moisture retaining mixes, others pretty much crappy dirt. Our plants show the differences too but good dirt mixed can be pretty expensive so we kind of update a little each year. All in all cheaper to buy veggies from the store but we all know how much better home grown is. BilletHead
  12. I would say 80 percent are doing real well. Have not looked real close to see what is forming. All the early rain I could not imagine I would be watering but I am. BilletHead
  13. Nice maters buddy. I did not start mine in December like you did . BilletHead
  14. Could of used you. Thought next time might let you and Chief go in front of our flotilla so to block the view and shield my eyes . # Eyes still burning, BilletHead
  15. Will be waiting for more of this! BilletHead

    What's Cooking?

Just how many chickens did you butcher and how many trees did you tap to feed that young man? BilletHead
  17. Yep we have had a little hatch too. Just seen them one place on some hollyhocks so far. This year I will spray some of the ornamentals and flowers. So sad because not recommended for my thorn less blackberries. It is looking for a bumper crop for the berries. BilletHead
  18. Well let me tell you if that was in the river they would of had a feast. If I had thought quick I would of stood up in the kayak, looked down and into the water and yelled SHARK! Epic until the crowd bathing would all at once exit the water. The result Exodus would of sucked the creek dry leaving us on gravel bars. BilletHead
  19. Yes Tho1mas we are in the process of making a kit like this. Have another tub like we have the water in here in the house that is being stocked. Have really thought of making a couple bug out type of bags we can just grab and not leave too much stuff in there all the time. No doom and gloom here people. Not being a pessimist just being am optimist and just in case persons, BilletHead
  20. Wrench I got it sealed real well now so we will be safe. I am on the other hand developing a catch and containment system for creepy crawlies and slithering pit vipers and will relocate them in your neck of the woods . BilletHead
  21. JD when possible I keep abreast of the weather through the news, weather radio, and internet radar. Some gut feeling too. If you watch the storms brewing to the West and track the watches and warnings forming along that line they are pretty accurate. Soon you get reports after the fact of damage and it has been spot on. I plan on gathering important things and walking to our shelter. I agree there are better options but this is our only option that will do for us, BilletHead
  22. Thanks friend I will look into that also. BilletHead
  23. We are not in Kansas anymore! You are just a softie and we won't tell anyone, I promise you buddy, BilletHead
  24. I bet next time you see him he will be much more skinny. I am glad I was in the back seat too. She sure was sitting really close to Chief. Might of been because of the gear shift but just saying this for clarity. Chief even picked up the shuttle tab and all it cost us was some cheese dipping sauce, BilletHead
  25. Oh yes our shuttle hostess, Full of stories and fun to listen to. What Chief said was right but part of the reason of the listening part might of been you could not get a word in edgewise. We all think maybe we should be worried a bit for Melissa's newly acquired boyfriend:) . She informed us she had not had a boyfriend in many years ! Oh the things you learn on the river, BilletHead
