  4. The Peppers: John Ness, You asked about that pepper photo. Well I got me seed packets out and did some recon on the peppers planted this season. The one is a big daddy sweet. And I quote "Huge, 8" to10", sweet Marconi peppers are glossy yellow, thick walled and crispy sweet." This one is now 10" long and no sign of getting yellow yet. Wanna pick it and try but think I will wait for color described? Next is long tall Sally sweet. and I quote, " Succulent, flavor-loaded fruits dazzle with sweetness. Italian frying pepper works culinary magic. Hybrid yields an abundance of glossy, thin walled, light-green 8" Cubanelle fruits. " We will see if we are dazzled with them This one is now 5" long, Big Boss Man Hybrid, "Ancho-poblano hybrid flourishes outsized yields of extra large 7" X 3" fruits. Peppers Scoville rating is 1500-4000." This is now 3.50" long., Last is Big Guy Hybrid. "At 5" long and 1" wide this spicy jalapeno is ideal for pickling, slicing and stuffing." This is now approx. 2" long, Why did we do these varieties? Heck if I know? We like trying different things pepper wise. BilletHead

Actually Ness I think I may try a fish in the salt? Who knows it may be good? I'm thinking some nice smallmouth fillets Ok now to dessert. Picked the tart pie cherry tree Friday morning. Mrs. BilletHead pitted them last evening. Worked them up into a cherry crisp after the shrimp! Wow sweet and tart. Good. Photo right out of the oven and it is still bubbling, BilletHead

Another first, shrimp cooked in rock salt. http://chiwulff.com/2015/06/05/chi-wulffs-friday-feast-5-june-spicy-salt-roasted-shrimp/ How do we know if we will like something? Try it and try it we did. Tasty, easy, and cooked just right, Not rubbery like over cooked shrimp can be. Layer of hot spicy rock salt under the layer of shrimp, Covered and ready to go back in the oven, Finished and plated, We had a slight deviation. Our Podunk stores had no star anise or whole coriander. Omitted the star anise and used ground coriander, BilletHead

    What's Cooking?

Hoping this does not rub you wrong but a simple rub of one part kosher salt and two parts coarse black pepper Just eating the bark on the ribs pretty good bite with all the pepper but with the meat goes well. The Mrs. and I discussed next time less pepper and some garlic powder a possibility. Spritz of cider vinegar before rub and then again spritz before the foil wrap. This recipe not mine but one off the net. The garlic will be my adjustment to this in the future. All in all this was pretty tasty rack of ribs. BilletHead

  12. That there raspberry is black gold. My favorite jam right behind gooseberry. Speaking of gooseberry might need to start picking soon, All four varieties of peppers are setting on well, Tomatoes getting bigger by the day. This sun is going to help them, Found this colorful leaf hopper on the cilantro, Started marigolds inside early and now they are going crazy, butterflies like them, Finally my flower child or blooming idiot with the tallest pale purple coneflowers we have ever seen from our perennial patch. We started these from several wild ones pirated from private prairie. These have been reseeding and coming up from roots from a planting over fifteen years ago. BilletHead

  15. You can have mine Phil MoGuy1973 posted a link in the Current River thread. A hatch table. http://www.magicicada.org/about/brood_pages/broods.php Looks like what I have going here is brood 4 the Kansan brood of the 17 year type. Looks like there might be a 13 year brood 23 , The lower Mississippi Brood that may hatch in isolated places in your area? Thanks for the link MoGuy1973. Pretty neat info. BilletHead
  16. The sound here right now is unreal. I cannot remember the last hatch being this noisy. You can literally look into the treetops and see them swarming and flying from tree limb to tree limb. Once and a while you can grab one on lower limb to feed the garden pond fish. It is now a fight to see which fish can get it first. I am a bit concerned about all my young trees especially the chestnuts. Read where you could cover the trees in netting to prevent damage. Also to plant your trees right after the hatching year. Do they really think I was thinking of that three years ago when I started these trees from a seed? Heck I can't remember sometimes what I did a week ago! I suppose I will take my chances and just try to make rounds of the trees several times daily when they start laying eggs and try to pick them off. In the mean time I have been having fun shooting them, yes shooting them. What a hoot. Found some .22 bird shot and have been shooting them off the limbs for the fish. Mrs. BilletHead makes a good spotter. Only had a few of the shells but success! Have to figure out the ideal distance though as I disintegrated a few to the point there was not enough weight left in them to make it through the leaves on the way to the ground. Next trip to town hope I can find more of these shells. BilletHead
  17. Well things are pretty slow in BilletHeadville, So I called Duane yesterday afternoon for the scoop. Come on down and I'll show you how. Twist my arm I thought. So up at 3:30 AM on and on the road soon after that heading South to Taney. Launched at cooper creek just below Lilleys and up to Phil's establishment to meet Duane. Got to meet Phil too and what a neat place he has. For all that have not you should do so. Big water not too fly rod friendly we were quickly shown how to make up a drift rig for the spinning rod. Loaded up double scuds on them. Up river we followed Duane and started drifting below fall creek. Do you ever get tired of catching fish? I thought so me neither Fish after fish like this, We caught many doubles and every time I looked towards Duane he had one on. Then Mrs. BilletHead hooks this, She out fished me today but that is nothing out of the ordinary. A break and back to Lilleys so Duane could pick up his bride at the dock. Still can't figure out how he ended up with her? She even delivered him lunch! What a lady. So off again we go this time to the cable and some drifts in the trophy area, It was a hoot more fish and then more fish. Caught on san juan worms too. Close to three PM and after six and a half hours on the water it was time for the BilletHeads to head out so we bid the Doty's adieux and wish them well as they head back to Alaska Saturday. Back to the ramp out of the water again to Phil's. Had to get me some of those OA stickers. Hoping there might be some left as we had not scored any yet. Sure enough there they were and we grabbed and ran for the long trip home. Great day and thanks Phil, Duane and Mona, Mr. and Mrs. BilletHead

    Cicadas

They started hatching here week before last. Still coming out of the ground some and it is very noisy in the trees. Grabbed some adults, Started throwing them into the garden pond. We have a koi, channel cat, hybrid bluegill and a quill back buffalo. Everyone got into the act but the channel cat was the pig. He close to two pounds now and the koi about the same size. In the picture you can see the koi but I missed the channel taking the bug, Got one that had emerged from the shell still white and soft, And then some of the assorted hulls left over, BilletHead

  25. Yes Ness, Rain, rain, rain. Haven't even wanted to check my old fashioned rain gauge this morning. Like your weather station. May have to think about one of those. Next year want to get some of those sun gold too. Everything still looking pretty good here. One of my squash plants a bit icky looking. Too wet I think even in a raised bed. Baby tomatoes all over my plants. I also know what you mean on the lettuce but miss mine since it is gone. BilletHead
